Mia was a young biologist who loved exploring the ocean. She had always been fascinated by the depths of the sea and the creatures that lived there. One day, she came across an old map that belonged to her grandfather. The map showed the location of a mysterious treasure that was hidden deep beneath the ocean.
Mia was determined to find the treasure. She packed her bags and set sail on her small boat. She sailed for days, battling strong winds and rough waves, until she finally reached the spot marked on the map. Eager to explore the depths below, Mia outfitted herself appropriately and dived into the ocean.
As she swam, Mia was surrounded by various sea creatures, but she kept a close eye out for any sign of the treasure, but nothing seemed out of the ordinary. As Mia was about to give up, she caught sight of a shiny object hidden beside a stone. She swam quickly towards it and noticed a chest covered in small sea creatures. When it comes to forces of nature, ants rank among the highest. They march one by one to form a colony for their insect empire and queen.
Nutrients, moisture, and a better climate are all invitations to ants. Concentrations of proteins, fats, or carbohydrates attract ants, which basically means all foods attract ants. Fun fact: Since artificial sweeteners do not contain any calory, ants don’t bother with them.
While ants get most of their water from the food they eat, they will seek water if they live in a dry climate. Also, experiments have shown that ants that live more than 60 miles away from the ocean will seek salt.
Since ants are cold-blooded, they will seek warmth in winter. Ants may enter a house that doesn’t have a single crumb on the floor. This is especially true of Argentine ants, which invade homes in winter.
So, how do you stop an army of ants from getting into your home If you want to get rid of ants, knowing yourself and your home is important. You should sweep up any area where you consume food regularly. Even if you don’t see any crumbs, bits of sugar or salt will attract ants. Store meat and ripe fruits in airtight containers.
Aside from the food you consume, you should keep an eye on other sources of nutrients. Pet bowls should be kept without any food or water. You should also periodically check your house plants. The moisture in the soil makes for an inviting place for ants to nest.
Finally, you need to clean out your garbage cans in the yard every once in a while and check them for cracks and holes. Ants move from one source of food to the next, and the nearest goldmine of food next to your trash is your home.

This fall, students at the University of Massachusetts (UMass) found a new menu at their canteens: the“diet for a cooler planet” menu. This meant herb-roasted lamb, raised with a carbon-friendly approach. It included sweet potatoes that had been picked from a local farm’s field. The options were plant-heavy, and locally grown, and involved little or no packaging.
“We wanted to let students participate in climate action by making choices about their food,” says Kathy Wicks, sustainability director for UMass Dining. The university is not alone in this effort. More and more American consumers and institutions are thinking about how their food choices impact climate change. For many, small choices at the grocery store and restaurant can be more accessible than big-ticket options like buying a fuel-efficient car.
Small changes in eating habits may make a big difference. Studies point to the food system as a significant cause of global warming. According to Project Drawdown, a research organization that evaluates climate solutions, the way food is grown, transported, and consumed accounts for about 1/4 of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Beef is a regular target. “If, on average, Americans cut 1/4 pound of beef per week from their diet, it’s like taking 10 million cars off the road a year,”says Sujatha Bergen, director of health campaigns for the Natural Resources Defense Council. Reducing food waste ranks third among climate solutions. While much waste occurs before consumers are involved, Americans also throw out a lot of food they have purchased: about $1,600 worth a year per family of four.
“People are beginning to understand that their food choices have a big impact on climate,” says Megan Larmer, director of regional food at the Glynwood Center for Regional Food and Farming in New York. But she adds that substantial change will need to come from the whole food system.
