Oliver’s brain is always overflowing with curiosity and imagination, which makes it difficult for him to focus at school or to feel like he fits in. First introduced in Lynda Mullaly Hunt’s 2016 novel, Fish in a Tree, the boy has a starring role in her picture book for readers aged six and up, Wish in a Tree. This is a book celebrating creative thinking and other things that set us apart.
Hunt did not have to search far to find her inspiration for Fish in a Tree and its companion. “This is my own story,” she said. “As a sixth grader with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder注意缺陷障碍), I vividly remember hearing other kids writing something on their papers and thinking, ‘I cannot do that. I must be really stupid.’”
“My teacher literally saved me that year by speaking to me about how I was doing, and asking me to help first graders with math.” Hunt recalled. Those experiences inspired Hunt’s interest in becoming a teacher, and she taught third and sixth grades for 10 years before turning to writing.
Though as a child she longed “to wave a magic wand (魔法棒) and be able to focus and get rid of the mind movies that made my life depressing,” she said, “it turned out to be a gift. I love kids and as a teacher the fact that I have ADD has meant that I am able to help them in useful ways.” Attesting to the fact that her sensitivity and empathy (同理心) run deep in her fiction, Hunt often hears that her books make readers cry. “I almost never cry while writing novels,” she said, “but when I wrote the line in which Oliver makes the wish ‘Please... please make me more like the rest of them,’ it made me tear up. I was right back there with that same childhood longing. It is so important that we continue to deliver the message that you are who you are, and you have to honor that. As I say in Wish in a Tree, ‘The tree is most beautiful when all the leaves are not the same.’”
4. What inspired Hunt to write Fish in a Tree
A. A student’s creative thinking. B. Her childhood struggles with ADD.
C. A famous psychologist’s advice. D. Her own experience with a companion.
5. How did Hunt’s teacher influence her life
A. By criticizing her lack of focus in class. B. By recommending her books to children.
C. By empowering her through talks and tasks. D. By telling her what ADD meant to a teacher.
6. Why does Hunt consider her ADD a “gift” now
A. It made her a bestselling author. B. It cured her childhood depression.
C It allowed her to focus on writing. D. It helped her connect with students.
7. What theme does Wish in a Tree primarily communicate
A. Fantasy stories help children process pain. B. Academic success requires strict discipline.
C. Individual differences should be celebrated. D. Teachers must adapt to students’ special needs.

Did you know that 1.3 billion metric tons of food waste is produced yearly around the world Did you also know that a charity in Copenhagen has come up with an incredible way to tackle this unbelievable amount of waste The rumors are true — the world’s first ever food surplus supermarket has opened in Copenhagen. The store, WeFood, aims to reduce the 700,000 tons of food waste created by Denmark’s population yearly, by selling surplus foods at 30 to 50 per cent cheaper than average supermarkets.
The only catch The food is past its official expiry (到期) date or has damaged packaging that would’ve caused it to be thrown away at a regular store. WeFood has formed working arrangements with major supermarket chains, butchers and fruit importers across Denmark to collect leftover food for sale at the surplus supermarket. The volunteer based initiative hopes to attract both low-income individuals and environmentally conscious shoppers, and has been receiving incredible international praise since it opened its doors on Feb. 21st.
As a nation, Denmark has already been doing a good job cleaning up its food waste act. The country bins 25 per cent less food than it did five years ago, and has put pressure on many of its supermarkets to sell food near its expiration date at lower prices. On a wider European level, Denmark’s neighbor, France, has recently banned supermarkets from throwing away unsold food, forcing stores to donate unwanted food to charities and food banks.
While this is all amazing news, the global fight to end food wastage is far from over, with food waste increasing by 50 per cent in the US since 1990. However, we need projects like WeFood to offer the much needed inspiration on the matter, and to urge other nations to take a look at their own food waste situations.
8. What is the main purpose of WeFood supermarket
A To provide luxury food at low prices. B. To compete with regular supermarkets.
C. To reduce food waste by selling surplus. D. To replace traditional charity food banks.
9. What does “catch” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Refusal. B. Disadvantage. C. Importance. D. Characteristic.
10. What measure has France taken to address food waste
A. Redistributing unsold food. B. Fining households for wasting food.
C. Taxing expired food heavily. D. Building more surplus supermarkets.
11. What is the author’s attitude toward global food waste reduction
A. Pessimistic due to US data. B. Satisfied with Denmark’s progress.
C. Indifferent to individual actions. D. Hopeful but acknowledging challenges.

A recent deep-sea expedition off Chile’s coast has revealed extraordinary marine (海洋的) discoveries, including more than 100 potentially new species and four massive underwater mountains.
Between Jan. 8 and Feb. 11, researchers on board the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s (SOI) research ship Falkor explored the seafloor off the coast of Chile. The team mapped 20,400 square miles (52,800 km2) of seafloor, uncovering four seamounts. The largest, named Solito (“alone” in Spanish), rises 11,581 feet (3,530m) above the seafloor, making it more than four times taller than the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, which stands at 2,717 feet (828m) tall. Using an underwater robot, scientists examined 10 seamounts, which revealed more than 100 species that the scientists suspect are new to science, including corals, sponges, sea urchins, mollusks and crustaceans.
“This is far beyond our expectations,” said lead scientist Javier Sellanes. “You always expect to find new species in these remote and poorly explored areas, but the amount we found, especially for some groups like sponges, is mind-blowing.”
The researchers took samples of the creatures and will now begin studying each one to determine whether it is a newfound species. “Full species identification can take many years,” SOI’s executive director Jyotika Virmani said, and the “incredible number of samples” could make this process even longer. The researchers also noted that a majority of the species make their homes in sensitive underwater habitats like coral and sponge communities. Human activities like mining and fishing threaten these areas. While new species within the Juan Fernández and Nazca-Desventuradas marine parks are legally protected from these threats, the seamounts along the Nazca and Salas y Gómez Ridges are currently protected.
This research trip is the latest of several SOI expeditions that have mapped seamounts in the southeast Pacific in recent years. The institute previously mapped four other huge seamounts during an expedition off the coast of Chile and Peru. Such “biological hotspots” are critical to understanding marine biodiversity, said SOI director Jyotika Virmani, as they “advance our knowledge of life on Earth”.
12. Why is the Burj Khalifa mentioned in paragraph 2
A To criticize human construction projects.
B. To explain why the expedition took place in Chile.
C. To emphasize how tall a newly discovered seamount is.
D. To compare modern architecture with underwater structures.
13. How does Javier Sellanes feel about the discoveries
A. Worried. B. Surprised. C. Regretful. D. Grateful.
14. What is the main concern about the new species found
A. Some of them are at risk. B. The water temperature is changing.
C. They are too dark to explore. D. There are too many tourists visiting.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The challenges of identifying new species.
B. The continuation of SOP’s research and its value.
C. The importance of protecting underwater habitats.
D. The comparison between different marine parks in Chile.

When I embraced minimalism ten years ago, I transformed from someone buried in clutter (杂乱) and busyness to a carefree traveler with a single backpack. ____16____
It was then that I came to realize the advantages of minimalist living. ____17____ With fewer possessions, you spend less time cleaning and organizing, gaining more hours for meaningful relationships. As shown in a 2009 study, clutter raises cortisol levels (皮质醇水平), while a tidy space calms our minds — and thus sharpens focus and productivity.
Though minimalism might sound restrictive at first, it actually creates space for what truly matters. ____18____ In reality, it’s about removing what doesn’t add value to your life, making room for what does. The goal isn’t deprivation (剥夺) but intentionality — you may begin by evaluating your belongings with three questions: Do I use it Do I love it Do I need it If an item fails all three, let it go.
____19____ You may apply the same principle to relationships. Surround yourself only with people who inspire and uplift you. Keep a gratitude journal to clarify priorities. ____20____ While some responsibilities can’t be avoided, prioritize your own well-being where possible. Minimalism isn’t about sacrifice (牺牲) — it’s about creating freedom to gain time, clarity, and joy. Start small, stay intentional, and watch your life transform.
A. It saves time and reduces stress.
B. Some people even adopt it as their life goal.
C. Minimalism extends beyond physical clutter.
D. Learn to say no to nonessential tasks that waste energy.
E. Here’s everything you need to know about living a minimalist lifestyle.
F. Many assume minimalism requires strict rules or means owning almost nothing.
G. The lifestyle freed me from physical load and brought unexpected clarity to my mind.

Group projects can be challenging, especially when team members don’t share the same level of commitment. I recently had a tough time working on a group project, too.
My teacher Mr. Johnson put me with three classmates who weren’t all that excited about getting any work done, and the experience was extremely stressful. Since my story isn’t all positive, I’ll change the girls’ names to Cookie and Cupcake, and I’ll call the boy Volcano.
Our assignment was to pick one of the 50 states and make a brochure about it. The troubles began immediately during our first meeting. While I wanted to focus on the assignment, my teammates were distracted. Cupcake suggested Hawaii because of its “super-cute swimsuits”, which led to an off-topic conversation about shopping. Volcano, instead of contributing ideas, made personal comments about my hair. It quickly became clear that no one was eager to discuss the project.
At our next group meeting, no one seemed very eager to talk about our brochure, so I went ahead and shared the interesting facts I’d learned about Hawaiian food and culture. When I was done, no one said anything, so I pulled out my notebook. “Cupcake, you had offered to search for pictures of Hawaiian sea life. Were you able to find some ” “I didn’t have time,” she answered, “but here’s a photo.” Cupcake presented a photo of herself at a Hawaiian hotel pool instead of the promised sea life pictures. Both Cookie and Volcano claimed they were “too busy” to complete their assigned parts about history and geography.
I was getting the impression that no one but me planned to work on the brochure. When I got home, my mom could tell I was stressed out. “What’s going on ” she asked. “No one else in my group is doing any work,” I told her. “So the only way to get the brochure done is for me to do it myself.” “Well,” my mom said with a smile, “I doubt you’re responsible for everyone else’s part. Why don’t you check in with your teacher about it ”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The next day, I talked to Mr. Johnson.

【答案】
The next day, I talked to Mr. Johnson. With my notes and the incomplete brochure draft in hand, I explained how Cookie, Cupcake, and Volcano hadn’t contributed despite multiple reminders. To my relief, Mr. Johnson nodded understandingly. “Group work evaluates both the final product and individual effort , ” he said, telling me that this project highlighted personal accountability. He suggested I talk to my group members and promised to offer help if needed. Armed with this reassurance, I texted my group: “Mr. Johnson wants progress reports tomorrow. Let’s meet after school to finish our parts together!” Surprisingly, all three replied instantly with thumbs-up emojis.
At our next group meeting, I tried to bring up my concerns in a friendly way. “Since we’re a team , we’re all relying on each other to do the best we can ,” I began, sliding printed research materials toward them. Volcano sheepishly admitted he’d actually gathered some interesting volcano facts, while Cookie produced a paragraph about Hula dance. Even Cupcake surprised us with beautiful marine life photos between her selfies. As we glued everything onto the poster board, I realized that true teamwork isn’t about perfect individual contributions, but about creating an environment where everyone feels motivated to participate in their own way.
