A duckling is very sad because he is the ugliest among his brothers and sisters. But when he grows up, he becomes a handsome swan. This is the plot (情节) of “The Ugly Duckling” by Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen. In fact, Andersen was an “ugly duckling” himself. In 1805, he was born into a poor family in Denmark. As a young boy, Andersen was tall, ugly and had a very big nose. His friends always said something bad about his big nose. Later, because his father died, Andersen had to live a hard life by himself.
