Before I was in Grade Three, I didn’t like to help others. I would get nervous and shy when someone asked me for help. Things changed when I was in Grade Four.
It was a cloudy morning. I was walking to school when I met a tall man. Carrying a long thin walking-stick (拐杖) and wearing sunglasses, he stood at the crossing. I found this a little strange as it was early in the morning and yet he was wearing sunglasses. But I crossed the road without thinking too much about it. Bikers, drivers, and walkers, we were all in a rush.
When I reached the other side and walked along the road, suddenly I heard cars and buses sounding their horns (喇叭). I turned around and saw that the man was in the middle of the road. It seemed that he was too scared to move. Just then, I knew that the man wasn’t able to see. Without thinking twice, I quickly ran back and helped him safely cross the road. The man turned his head to me and smiled, saying, “Thank you very much for your kind help.”
It made me feel good to hear those words. In fact, I felt so good that I asked him where he was going and if he needed more help. He told me that he was going to the market not far from my school. I walked the thankful man to the market and then left for my school.
From then on, I often tried to help people in need. And now, I volunteer to help out at the old people’s home in my neighbourhood every Sunday. Helping others really matters in my life. Being helpful makes me happy and I no longer find it nonsense.
