When I got into middle school, I thought I just needed to study. My parents would do all the housework. I often threw my things on the bed and sofa, so our house was always in a mess.
One day, when my mother came home after work and found a lot of rubbish in our house, she was so angry. She said to me seriously, “You must do some housework every day from now on.” At first, I didn’t think it is fair for me to do that. However, I followed what my mother said.
After a few days, I understood that doing housework was harder than I had imagined. How hard my parents were! They had to do a lot of housework after work, so I must help them much more at home. I tried to do different kinds of housework in my house, so they could have a good rest when they got home. My parents were pretty happy, and they were proud of my change.

Now students spend their summer vacation doing many kinds of things, but things were different twenty years ago.
In the past, students usually spent their summer vacation helping their parents do housework. There was more than one child in one family, so the older brothers or sisters usually had to take care of the younger brothers or sisters because their parents had to go to work and had no time to look after them. Usually, students had a little homework, so they didn’t have much stress (压力). Some students in the countryside often went to climb the mountains, swam or went fishing with their friends during their summer vacation, but they hardly ever went far away.
Things were different now. Students have better living conditions now, and they don’t have to do much housework. Most parents often take their children to visit some big cities or go sightseeing. Students can go to many places of great interest. They can also visit their relatives far from them. They can easily take a bus or a high-speed train or even a plane. Most families can afford it. I think students today can enjoy themselves and they are luckier.

A new rule in Changzhou
Changzhou, a city in Jiangsu Province, has a new rule for both parents and children. Parents need to make sure their children do at least two hours of housework every week. 74 There are many different ideas about the new rule. 75
76 “I want to help my parents with the housework, but I don’t have time to do so,” he says. “I just have a few hours to relax every weekend, and doing housework is not on my to-do list.” 77
An expert, Xiong Bingqi, says, “To make sure the new rule works well, parents need to help their children learn about some skills and join them to do the housework.”
“Many parents only focus on children’s study and don’t teach them important life skills,” Xiong says. “ 78 It can also make their brains (大脑) work better.”

G.He also says that most of his classmates don’t do housework, either.
Many kids do housework such as doing the dishes, making the bed, and folding the clothes. After doing chores, they get some money or other computer time. Paying kids for housework is one of the most popular topics, especially at a time when everyone is more careful about money. Some parents think now that adults are paid to do their jobs, we should pay kids for everyday housework.
But some people don’t think kids should get rewards (报酬) for doing housework. Susie Walton, an expert, believe that by rewarding (奖励) kids, parents are sending a message that work isn’t worth (值得) doing unless you get something in return. “Doing any kind of housework is a team effort (团队合作),” Walton said. “A home is a living space for everyone in the family. It’s important for kids to see that we all have responsibilities (责任) in the house, and families decide how they want their home to look, and how they are going to keep it looking like what they want.”
Other people believe that getting a reward encourages kids to do housework, and it also teaches them real world lessons about how we need to work to get money. There are also apps that gives kids points and digital (数字的) gifts that can be redeemed (兑现) either online or in the real world. “Our goal is to give kids lawful (合法的) power so they can get rewards,” says Chris Bergman. “And kids need rewards to help encourage them.”
