My father loved lists. Over 25 years, he recorded 539 books he read and 322 episodes of Booknotes on C-SPAN, which he watched every Sunday night. He also kept grocery lists for his mini-fridge—Pepsi, coffee, heavy cream—and daily tasks. These notes filled small notebooks, always near his reading chair. He wrote them until December 31, 2004, when cancer stopped him. After his death, I gathered the notebooks into a box. For years, I couldn’t bear to open them.
Born in 1927 in Lowell, Massachusetts, my father was the son of a leather factory worker and grandson of an Irish immigrant who cleaned horse manure from the streets. Despite his humble beginnings, he was brilliant. After a summer in the leather factory, he graduated high school at 16 and went on to Boston College. He served in World War II and later earned degrees in physics. Then he worked at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory, moved his family from Lowell to Boston, and sent his kids to private colleges. It seemed he had left Lowell behind — but not so. Deep down, he saw himself simply as a working-class Lowell kid who had just read a lot of books.
He didn’t travel much, and didn’t feel the need. When I asked if he regretted not seeing the world, he defended himself: “I’ve sailed the Atlantic in stormy winds, climbed the Himalayas, and stared down wild animals.” Then he added, “I read.” Books were his world. From them, he learned to survive landslides, shark attacks, and even gorilla attacks. He had what he called “a rich inner life”— and it was true.
Shortly before his death, he opened a small purple notebook and began one last list. It described details from 1930s Lowell — things lost in time. Twenty years later, I found it. In his flowing handwriting, Dad reached back to Lowell — a time long gone, now captured only in memory. Lost and only in memory — that was how I was experiencing Dad now. Squinting my eyes, I saw not just the city he loved, but the quiet, extraordinary man I called Dad.
4. Why are the details of the father’s lists mentioned in Paragraph 1
A. To imply his fear of forgetting. B. To reflect his ordered and thoughtful life.
C. To reveal his reliance on control. D. To show his love for literature and cuisine.
5. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 2 mean
A. He stayed humble and rooted. B. He struggled with his identity.
C. His success originated from his roots. D. He felt torn about his background.
6. What does the father’s quote in paragraph 3 mainly reveal
A. His pride in inner journeys. B. His dream of global travel.
C. His desire for real adventure. D. His escape from physical world.
7. What is the main theme of the passage
A. Pursuit and action. B. Loss and regret.
C. Ambition and escape. D. Memory and identity.

When the morning sun throws light on the stone bricks of Durbar Square, my fingers gently touch the newly restored wooden doors, their surface warm and vivid — as if they had just awakened from a surgery. The carved patterns tell a story: the meeting of ancient Nepali woodcarving craftsmanship with the new restoration technology from China.
The nine-story Basantapur Tower is not just a building; it’s Nepal’s cultural DNA. This mid-8th-century pagoda-style structure suffered extensive damage in the 2015 earthquake. Today, as I look up at the 30-meter-tall temple supported by several thousand carefully restored wooden components, I am witnessing a miracle crafted together by two civilizations.
In Nepal’s search for funding and technology to repair this ancient structure after the earthquake, the answer came from across the Himalayas. In 2017, China’s National Cultural Heritage Administration sent a team more like a tech startup than traditional restorers. They brought laser scanners, high-tech structural analysis software, and a philosophy: “Don’t just fix the surface, strengthen the bones.” The most revolutionary intervention went unseen: flexible steel cables (绳索) running through hollowed-out (挖空的) wooden posts enabled the structure to swing safely during an earthquake.
Here, in this UNESCO World Heritage Site, I saw a currency of influence. The restoration cost pales compared to the value of knowledge transfer: Nepali restorers were trained in 3D modeling through workshops conducted in both Chinese and Nepali. More Chinese heritage workers are going abroad, bringing China’s advanced techniques to the world, while more international conservationists are coming to China to learn its preservation principles and methods.
This dance between tradition and innovation is a powerful demonstration of the transformative power of cultural exchange. If such exchanges can cross the Himalayas, they can travel greater distances, enlightening us all. As the morning winds of the Himalayas carry the metallic whispers of temple bells, I recall a profound insight: “Civilizations become enriched through exchanges and thrive through mutual learning.”
8. What do we know about the Basantapur Tower
A. It is a palace of modern crafts.
B. It is a symbol of Nepal’s culture.
C. It provided shelter for local people.
D. It stayed complete in the earthquake.
9. What is innovative about the restoration work
A. The reduction in the use of wooden posts.
B. The worldwide support for cultural preservation.
C. The training of Nepali restorers in 3D modeling.
D. The internal strengthening with flexible steel cables.
10. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A. Digitalization of heritage sites.
B. China’s sharing of restoration knowledge.
C. UNESCO guidelines of cultural relics.
D. China’s techniques of heritage restoration.
11. What is a suitable title for the text
A. Cross-Border Cooperation Revives Heritage
B. Nepal’s Struggle to Preserve Its Past
C. Approaching Nepal Through Ancient Temples
D. Looking Into Traditional Craftsmanship

Scientists have discovered that many animals, including hermit crabs, rats, and fish, have distinct personalities. These animals show consistent behavioral differences over time and in various situations, just like dogs and cats, as pet owners know.
But how do social situations affect individual personalities University of Bristol biologist Christos C. Loannou and his colleagues sought to find out by turning to a small fish called the three-spined stickleback, which inhabits mildly salty coastal water throughout the Northern Hemisphere. “They’re found both as individuals and in social groups in the wild,” making them perfect for personality assessments across different settings, Loannou says.
The researchers took 80 fish and placed each under a protective cover at one end of a tank, with food at the opposite end. Crossing the tank to feed would seem risky to the sticklebacks because open water typically exposes them to the threat of danger.
The researchers studied them over several days, observing that braver fish quickly left their shelter to get food, while shyer ones took longer to emerge and swam across the tank more cautiously. However, when 10 fish were placed together under a cover, individual personalities disappeared, with the braver fish acting as group leaders, waiting for others to catch up. “The first individuals come out quickly but wait when they realize they’re not being followed,” Loannou explains. However, when separated from the group, the fish returned to their original behaviors. These results, showing how group dynamics influence individual characteristics, were published in Science Advances in September.
The new findings suggest that group dynamics restrict individual personalities, and the researchers say it is the first time that such restriction has been clearly linked to an underlying cause: the need to conform when faced with a risky decision.
Animal personality researchers have historically focused on individuals while ignoring group behavior, and collective behavior researchers have focused on groups while downplaying individual differences, according to University of St Andrews animal behavior researcher Mike Webster, who was not involved. “This study brings those two research streams together,” showing that animal personalities are flexible yet consistent, he says.
12. What made sticklebacks chosen for the study
A. Coastal habitat. B. Safety awareness.
C. Strong individuality. D. Social flexibility.
13. Which best describes the impact of group dynamics on individual personalities
A. Predictable. B. Temporary.
C. Immediate. D. Slight.
14. What does the underlined word “conform” mean in paragraph 5
A. Control. B. Choose. C. Follow. D. Escape.
15. What can we infer about the research from the last paragraph
A. It fills a gap in animal behavior research.
B. It reveals the role of animal group behavior.
C. It challenges adaptable animal personalities.
D. It proves animal personalities disappear in groups.

Strength training is having a moment. Planet Fitness, one of America’s biggest gym chains, is cutting back on treadmills (跑步机) in favor of power cages. Gym trends come and go. ____16____ They have for many years been trying to persuade the public that it is good to be not only fit but strong.
In 2010 the World Health Organization added a recommendation of two sessions of muscle-strengthening exercise a week to its exercise guidelines. ____17____ Japan, for example, updated its advice in 2024.
____18____ It lowers blood pressure and cuts the risk of heart disease, strokes and some kinds of cancer. Strength exercise offers many of the same benefits. And it also helps regulate metabolism (新陈代谢), keep blood sugar steady, and maintain healthy fat levels.

The body’s muscles naturally begin to reduce in one’s 30s. ____19____ Lack of muscle increases the risk of falls, a big killer of the elderly.
With the world ageing rapidly, sarcopenia is only going to become a bigger problem. Though some degree of physical decline is unavoidable with age, evidence suggests that, even for people in their 80s, a bit of pumping iron can work wonders. As so often in medicine, it is better to prevent a disease from taking hold in the first place than to try to cure it afterwards. ____20____
A. Strength training is calling.
B. It may even help treat depression.
C. Many governments have followed suit.
D. That process gathers pace in a person’s 60s and 70s.
E. There’s no doubt cardio such as jogging is good for you.
F. But the rise of pumping iron will be welcomed by doctors.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My 12-year-old daughter is smart, even sharper than I was at her age, but she just wouldn’t pick up a chapter book for fun. School books were tough for her, and when it came to free time, she stuck to picture books and listened to “Harry Potter” audiobooks. None of these really got her into deep reading, where you stare at words on paper and let your imagination fly.
For a while, I had to face the truth: I hadn’t passed on the joy of reading to her. I tried telling her how reading makes life richer, but she shrugged (耸肩) and said, “Lots of my friends don’t like reading either. It’s no big deal.”
Things went worse when she got a smartphone last year. Suddenly, my lively child became lazy, always on her phone. I suggested other fun activities, but she just found theme “boring.” I still held out hope for reading, seeing it as a developmental escape. But the problem was that she chose the colorful, noisy world of her phone.
Then right before we left for an 8-day holiday on a beautiful Greek island, we talked about reading again. “Novels are the best way to understand how people feel,” I told her. “I can learn more from social media,” she replied. I mentioned storytelling and history, and she said, “I can watch movies and use the internet.” I even promised to buy her any books she liked, but she smiled and said, “Mama, welcome to your dream.”
I realized I couldn’t win. She had good reasons and I couldn’t say she was wrong. Sure, reading opens up new worlds, but so does the whole internet. Still, deep down, I wished she’d experience the pure magic of reading—those special moments when an author says exactly what you’ve always felt but never knew how to express.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
So, instead of talking more, I decided to offer a reward.

【47题答案】
【答案】 So, instead of talking more, I decided to offer a reward. “If you finish one novel during this trip, I’ll buy you that art set you’ve been wanting,” I proposed, pointing to the book I’d secretly packed: The Secret Garden. To my surprise, she hesitated but agreed. The Greek island, with its limited Wi-Fi, became the perfect setting. With fewer digital distractions, she reluctantly picked up the book by the pool. Gradually, the vibrant descriptions of the garden and the resilient characters drew her in. By day three, I found her reading under an olive tree, completely absorbed, her phone forgotten beside her.
By the end of the holiday, my daughter finished her book and asked for another. Her eyes sparkled as she discussed Mary’s transformation and the magic of the hidden garden. “Can I get A Wrinkle in Time next ” she asked. I smiled, overwhelmed with relief. Later, she even used her phone creatively—taking photos of scenic spots that reminded her of the story and sharing her reading journey online. Watching her connect literature to her world, I realized the true reward wasn’t just the art set; it was witnessing her discover the quiet magic of words, a joy no screen could replicate. Tears welled in my eyes—she’d finally felt what I could never fully explain.
