Over the years, as I dealt with the pressure of finishing my Ph. D. and starting my post-doctor, I had grown more competitive. I pushed myself to be t ho first to generate thrilling results and to publish in high-impact journals. Those who could have been collaborators (合作者) became rivals I hated.
But the effect of this competitive character was exactly the opposite of what I had hoped for. When I encountered scientific problems, I thought I had to solve them myself instead of asking for help. The pressure became overwhelming. I began to feel alone and lost. I became less and less productive.
I emailed my mentors (导师), explaining that I had put myself second and the job first for too long. They told me that I wasn’t the first academic to feel that way, and that I wouldn’t be the last. They agreed that I should take the time I needed to take care of myself. So, with my mentors’ support and an uncertain future, I left.
Back home, I spent time with family and friends and opened up about my struggles. At first, I was ashamed. But the more I talked about my demons, the more other people told me about their own. I also started to receive emails from my workmates. After a few lines asking how I was, many expressed worries about how they were managing the stress of academic life. Vulnerable (脆弱的) researchers were poking their heads out of their shells. Our relationships deepened. I began to feel less alone.
Three months later, I was prepared to go back to the science that I loved, and I now had a foundation to be more open with my colleagues. I understood that we all struggle sometimes, and that collaboration can be more powerful than competition.
With a bit of time, collaboration has replaced competition. Working with others and seeking help doesn’t weaken my value or contributions; it means we can all win. I no longer feel lonely and unhappy.
24. How did the author feel after adopting a competitive approach
A. Empowered and successful. B. Overwhelmed and isolated.
C. Motivated and productive. D. Ashamed and annoyed.
25. Why did the writer take a break
A. He was always the last. B. He needed some time to readjust.
C. He got serious homesick. D. He failed to care about himself.
26. What does the underlined phrase mean
A. Trying to be open with others. B. Starting to walk out regularly.
C. Being more confident in research. D. Tending to be happier than ever.
27. Which can be the most suitable title for the passage
A. From competition to cooperation B. From selfishness to selflessness
C. From problems to solutions D. From uncertainty to certainty
C
Drivers often secretly look around for police before using a phone while driving. This dangerous behavior occurs daily worldwide and claims thousands of lives. Fortunately, AI technology now installed in millions of cars can detect if a driver is on the phone, smoking, or wearing a seatbelt as well as his age, sex, weight, and mood.
Two cameras, on the steering wheel and rear view mirror, scan the cabin (座舱) using AI and ensure the driver is paying attention to the road, especially as cars become semi- autonomous. In Europe they will be required on every new car sold from 2026 — the driver can get warnings if they are distracted or sleepy.
Seeing Machines, whose driver monitoring systems have been installed in more than 2.6 million vehicles, demonstrated additional capabilities. The AI system can identify the name, gender, height, and weight of the driver and passengers, which helps determine how hard an airbag should be deployed (调用) and inform emergency services who is in the car after a crash. It can also detect basic face expressions like happiness, sadness, or surprise. Nick DiFiore, its strategic project adviser, said car companies are eager to use the potential of cameras.
Mike Lenné, chief science and innovation officer at Seeing Machines, said: “In-cabin sensing is definitely going to be the safety technology of the decade.” Paul McGlone of Seeing Machines questions what authorities will do if phone-use monitoring, one of the China’s standards for driver monitoring, is put into practice. Edmund King of the AA thinks such monitoring could help with driver distraction but depends on how it’s carried out. Matthew Beecham notes that while cameras improve driving, they also turn cars into moving observation units. The UK Department for Transport is considering which technologies are suitable for compulsory use in Great Britain.
28. What is the main purpose of introducing AI technology into vehicles
A. To improve the comfort of driving. B. To better driver’s physical condition.
C. To reduce dangerous driving behaviors. D. To increase the autonomy of the vehicle.
29. How does the AI system work
A. It tracks traffic flow via cameras. B. It takes clear pictures via cameras.
C. It monitors the cabin via double cameras. D. It detects obstacles via double cameras.
30. What is AI system unable to do according to Seeing Machines
A. Identify the driver’s driving experience. B. Decide the best airbag deployment force.
C. Detect the driver’s basic facial expressions. D. Report to emergency staff who is in the car.
31. What can be inferred about AI system from the last paragraph
A. It has positive impact on society. B. Its application faces uncertainties.
C. It has gained worldwide adoption. D. It will be compulsorily used soon.
D
Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows: Once we have learned something, additional learning experiences increase the length of time we will remember it.
In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn.
The multiplication tables (乘法口诀表) are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood.
The law of overlearning explains why cramming (突击学习) for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for one’s future development.
32. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 1
A. Stories for children are easy to remember. B. Children have a better memory than grown-ups.
C. Poem reading is a good way to learn words. D. People remember well what they learned in childhood.
33. The author explains the law of overlearning by _______.
A. presenting research findings B. setting down general rules
C. using examples D. making a comparison
34. According to the author, being able to use multiplication tables is _______.
A. a result of overlearning B. a special case of cramming
C. a skill to deal with math problems D. a basic step towards advanced studies
35. What is the author’s opinion on cramming
A. It leads to failure in college exams. B. It’s helpful only in a limited way.
C. It’s possible to result in poor memory. D. It increases students’ learning interest.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It is natural to compare ourselves to others and to get caught in a mental comparison loop, and yet this seldom is beneficial. You may have heard the expression, “ 36 ” To me, this rings true as I have found it is quite difficult to compare myself to others and feel satisfied at the same time.
Comparison not only robs us of delight, but it also fuels self-criticism and a lack of self-acceptance. 37 “I am not as successful, competent, attractive as they are.” “Why don’t I have what they have ” We use comparison as an avenue for self-criticism, “What’s wrong with me I must be an exact loser.” This hinders self-acceptance.
We often tell ourselves we are acceptable only if we meet certain standards, and we evaluate how we measure up by looking at others. The tendency is to conclude that we are not measuring up, particularly if we have a low sense of self-worth. 38 We don’t just ask ourselves, “What’s wrong with me ” We worry what others will think: “What’s wrong with them ” The looming sense of possible rejection creates uneasiness and anxiety.
39 It tells us that if we meet the expectations, lose weight, get a promotion, or buy a new house, we will feel better, calmer, more self-assured, and stop comparing ourselves. This may be temporarily true, yet, a comparison is an internal process that is ultimately based on our thoughts and sense of self, not external circumstances. We can always find something else to compare, another expectation we tell ourselves we are not meeting. 40 So comparison can destroy our awareness of personal values gradually.
To stop comparing ourselves to others, we have to recognize that the comparison game is unwinnable and stop playing.
A. No comparison, no life.
B. Comparison is the thief of joy.
C. Comparison can even be misleading.
D. We are focused on others and not on what is meaningful to us.
E. Typically, comparison will lead to feeling inadequate or inferior.
F. Shift from being guided by comparison to being guided by values.
G. And we fear that we are going to be judged by our perceived failures.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
In Grade 9 I joined boxing classes. My friend Lea and I were the only girls in the class.
We got to throw our first punches (拳击) and learned how we should stand. I still didn’t know how to do it well, but I felt that choosing the boxing class was a right decision. Mr. Vernon, our boxing teacher, made us work hard and sweat. The boxing pads (防护垫) were my favorite, but my punches weren’t strong enough.
After participating in more practices, we had learned how to punch in six different ways. The boys were improving a lot on their strength, and Lea with her speed. What about me Well, I had a hard time seeing the difference. Mr. Vernon would always tell me that practice would make me stronger, and this was what helped motivate me to continue.
Each practice there was at least one boy who would make fun of me and say, “Oh, you’re too short to box. Mr. Vernon has to bend down when you are on the boxing pads; oh, you’re not strong enough; you punch like a mouse.”
I know those comments were not to hurt me, but just to have fun. It’s true. I’m a small and short person and I did lack confidence; but hearing those comments can either bring you down, or make you feel motivated to show them they are wrong. In my case, they started to discourage me. I didn’t have the strength to think they were wrong, and part of me thought that they were speaking the truth. I hid it inside my heart because I thought that showing I was doubting myself would make it worse.

Short Video Contest Held at Our School
A Short Video Contest themed Technology and Innovation was held in our school auditorium last Friday, inspiring students to blend technology and creativity through the medium of video.
The competition attracted over 50 entries from students across all grades, each presenting unique perspectives on how technology is shaping the future. From futuristic gadgets to AI-driven solutions for everyday problems, the videos were a testament to the students’ imagination and technical skills. A panel of professional judges awarded top prizes to the most creative and technically impressive videos.
The event not only provided a platform for students to showcase their talents but also fostered a deeper understanding of the role of technology in driving innovation.
67. One possible version:
Then came one particular practice. Somehow I was mad and angry, which made my punches suddenly stronger and faster. What amazed me was that gradually I just didn’t have that anger in me. After the practice, all my classmates burst into cheers for my great performance and Mr. Vernon also said that I was making great progress. With his praise I finally found the strength I needed. In the following practices, he was impressed with my good boxing skills, because they were getting powerful.
The experience taught me a great lesson. Boxing requires a lot of work and effort, but it has also taught me not to feel discouraged about what others say. Thanks to boxing, I have gradually realized that being short doesn’t define me. If we focus on our strong points and improve our weak ones, there is no reason for us to feel disappointed. Day by day I am becoming increasingly confident, definitely sure nothing will limit me to doing what tall or strong people can do.
