Being self-employed, I often check my bank balance, feeling relief when payments are received and anxiety when bills empty my account. Money’s ups and downs strongly affect my mood, especially during the holidays, where every festive activity seems to come with a price tag. Despite my financial stability — owning a home, low costs, and savings — money often feels like an emotional burden.
Elizabeth Husserl, author of The Power of Enough: Finding Joy in Your Relationship with Money, explains that money is deeply personal. “The same amount means different things based on lifestyles and choices,” she says. Rising expenses can cause anxiety and lead people to focus too much on making or saving money, taking attention away from other important aspects of life. This pursuit can harm health, relationships, and well-being, creating a life where money becomes both a scapegoat (替罪羊) and a distraction from unmet emotional needs.
Husserl highlights that while financial security forms a baseline, money alone cannot bring fulfillment. Some people spend their lives saving without enjoying the fruits of their labor, while others turn to emotional spending, like shopping, to cope with stress, masking deeper issues like loneliness or a lack of purpose. True wealth, she argues, comes from recognizing these emotional drives and matching finances with life priorities.
To build a healthier relationship with money, Husserl recommends understanding the emotional reasons behind spending, setting clear priorities, and redefining wealth. Practical steps include journaling about feelings toward money and taking the time to evaluate the value of purchases. Broadening the definition of wealth to include relationships, health, and purpose helps balance financial goals with personal well-being.
Talking to Husserl shifted my perspective. While holiday spending remains a concern, I’ve begun to see it as typical for the season and feel more confident in recovering financially. Though my bank app doesn’t always bring joy, it’s a reminder of what truly makes me feel rich.
24. Why does the writer mention checking his bank balance regularly
A To emphasize his financial stability.
B. To highlight the importance of saving.
C. To show money’s emotional effect on him.
D. To imply the hardship of self-employment.
25. According to Husserl, what is a result of focusing too much on money
A. It can help reduce anxiety and stress.
B. It can lead to better lifestyle choices.
C. It can improve relationships and well-being.
D. It can overshadow other crucial parts of life.
26. Husserl’s view on emotional spending suggests that it is ________.
A. a method for dealing with stress B. a solution for financial priorities
C. a temporary relief without resolution D. a way to manage emotional well-being
27. What is the key to building a healthy relationship with money
A. Balancing wealth with personal well-being.
B. Setting clear priorities for financial security.
C. Identifying the emotional causes of spending.
D. Focusing on saving and the value of purchases.

A coral farm in the Bahamas is proving that the most efficient way to restore coral reefs may be growing them on land.
Coral Vita is a reef restoration project which grows corals using microfragmentation — the process of cutting corals into small pieces and positioning them near each other to trigger a natural healing and accelerate the rapid growth of coral tissue.
While on the farm, corals are also exposed to managed stress such as water warming or acidification, to help cultivate their resilience (弹性) — this process is also known as “assisted evolution”. Once fully grown, the corals are moved to degraded reef sites in the ocean where their impact is already noticeable.
“One of the restoration sites in Grand Bahama had 75 percent survivorship of corals after one year” cofounder Sam Teicher tells Mashable. “In the Bahamas, if you have 30-50 percent survivorship after one year, that’s considered a good project. So we had one site 75 percent, another site 30 percent, another site 99 percent.”
During a mass bleaching (变白) in the summer of 2023, natural corals in the area were wiped out. But the corals Coral Vita planted, which had been given a resilience boost on the land farm, survived.
One of the elements that distinguishes Coral Vita from other reef restoration projects is that it is a for-profit organization, which Teicher says was a conscious choice.
“We felt like many environmental challenges weren’t being solved rapidly or effectively enough by those sectors, despite the best intentions and hard work,” he says. “So what if we could create a company that can pay for restorations instead of a donation here and a grant there, which is how most coral farming projects are funded, which unfortunately limits a lot of the critically needed impact to keep reefs alive.”
28. What does Coral Vita do
A. It collects endangered corals from the ocean.
B. It restores coral reefs by planting them on land.
C. It triggers a healing process of corals under the sea.
D. It cuts corals into pieces and plants them in water.
29. What does the fourth paragraph imply
A. The restoration process still face huge challenges.
B. The restoration process will surely bring great changes.
C. The restoration will greatly improve the environment.
D. The restoration has made significant achievements.
30. Why does Coral Vita choose to be a for-profit organization consciously
A. Because it can not acquire enough donation from society.
B. Because Coral Vita can pay for restorations with the profit.
C. Because most coral farming projects are funded by companies.
D. Because the company’s objective is to make profits from the project.
31. Which of the following might be the best title
A. What if Protecting Coral Reefs Means Growing Them on Land
B. How Was a Reef Restoration Founded in the Bahamas
C. The Great Achievements Coral Vita Has Achieved
D. Endangered Coral Reefs Were Saved by A Company
D
Goldman Sachs estimates there were over 80 million social media influencers globally in 2024, spanning platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, with the number growing 10% - 20% annually. While some perceive influencing as a pastime, others pursue it full time, drawn by stories of influencers making tens of thousands of dollars per post or launching their own brands. Morning Consult reports that 57% of American Gen Zers dream of becoming influencers, with 53% referring to it as a “respectable career”.
For companies, the appeal of influencer marketing (营销) lies in its capability to target specific audiences through content creators, alongside consumers’ rising social media engagement. Influencer Marketing Hub notes 86% of brands globally plan to invest in influencer campaigns in 2025, up from 37% in 2017, with nearly a quarter committing over 40% of their marketing budgets to such efforts.
However, the influencer boom presents challenges. Goldman Sachs reveals only 4% of influencers earn over $100,000 annually. AI-generated “virtual influencers” like Aitana López - a computer-designed fitness expert with 330,000 Instagram followers - threaten to flood feeds (信息流) further. While small creators with modest (不算多的) followings may earn side income, few can quit their regular jobs. Market overcrowding also makes online fame unstable. Joe Gagliese of Viral Nation warns that even viral moments don’t guarantee lasting success: “If influencers don't take advantage of the momentum (势头), someone else will.”
Consumer exhaustion adds another hurdle. A 2023 McKinsey survey found 68% of global fashion consumers were critical about the massive amount of sponsored content. Anita Balchandani of McKinsey notes influencers initially gained attention as “trusted” voices, but maintaining veracity alongside paid promotions is now crucial. Seeking this balance is key to staying relevant in an overcrowded market.
Ultimately, while the appeal of influencer careers remains, the reality is tough: as the industry grows, so does the gap between the fascinating dream and real sustainability.
32. What makes many Gen Zers keen to enter the field of influencing
A. The potential to be wealthy or start their own businesses.
B. The opportunity to secure regular corporate jobs.
C The guarantee of immediate success and popularity.
D. The rocketing popularity of social media platforms.
33. Which of the following is NOT a factor discouraging social media influencers
A. Low earnings. B. Companies' preference for AI.
C. Intense competition. D. Displeased audiences.
34. What does the underlined word “veracity” in paragraph 4 most probably mean
A. Popularity. B. Confidence.
C. Honesty. D. Competence.
35. What can be the best title for the text
A. The Rise of Influencers and Their Impact on Social Media
B. Opportunities and Challenges within the Influencer Economy
C. Gen Zers' Enthusiasm for Entering Sooial Media Influencing
D. Brands' Climbing Marketing Budgets for Influencer Campaigns

Li Ming was a 17-year-old exchange student from China. With a heart full of dreams and a little bit of nervousness, he flew to the United Kingdom to start a new adventure. He had always imagined what it would be like to walk through the historic streets of England and meet people from different parts of the world. But as soon as he arrived at his new school, he felt a little unsure.
In his new class, Li Ming struggled to start conversations with his British classmates. They spoke so quickly and used words and phrases he didn't understand. When he tried to join their conversations, he felt shy about his accent and worried that he might say something wrong. He also noticed that British students seemed to value their personal space more than he was used to, which made it even harder for him to find the right moment to start a meaningful talk.
Group work was even harder. During a group project in literature class, Li Ming had trouble explaining his ideas clearly, feeling like his ideas were getting lost in translation. And he started to
doubt himself.
Social events outside of class were just as difficult. At a school party, Li Ming watched his classmates laugh, dance, and sing along to the latest pop songs. He felt left out, not knowing the songs or the dance moves. He wanted to join the fun, but the fear of looking silly kept him on the sidelines.
One day, the school announced a talent show, Li Ming, who practiced traditional Chinese kung fu, really wanted to try. While he was hesitating, a group of British students interested in cultural performances invited him to join them. Li Ming agreed.

66. Dear Mr. Smith,
I’m Li Hua, editor of our school English newspaper. Our school successfully held the “Green Energy Innovation Week” recently.
The highlight was the solar-car competition, which attracted many students. They used their knowledge to design and make solar-powered cars. What impressed us most was that some cars could run very fast. I propose a joint project where we can share ideas about green energy. We can hold online meetings to discuss new inventions.I sincerely hope you can join us. This cooperation will not only enhance our understanding of green energy but also strengthen the friendship between our schools.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
67. During their practice, the group was amazed by Li Ming’s Chinese kung fu. His fluid movements combining strength and grace drew gasps of admiration. When he demonstrated a dragon-style sequence, the British students clapped enthusiastically. Sensing their genuine interest, Li Ming offered to teach basic stances. In return, they taught him popular dance steps, blending Eastern and Western elements into their performance. Gradually, Li Ming found himself laughing naturally during rehearsals. The cultural exchange dissolved his anxiety, replacing it with collaborative joy. By performance day, their routine had transformed into a vibrant fusion of martial arts and modern dance.
After the show, Li Ming noticed some changes happening. Classmates greeted him warmly in corridors, asking about kung fu philosophies. In literature class, group members actively sought his interpretations, patiently listening to his accented English. At lunch breaks, students invited him to join conversations about cultural differences. The once-daunting school parties became opportunities to share Chinese pop songs. Most importantly, Li Ming stopped overthinking every interaction. He realized communication wasn’t about perfection, but sincere effort. Slowly, his initial adventure transformed into meaningful connections built on mutual curiosity and respect.
