The Farmer and the Tiger
Reeds grew luxuriantly and densely in the marsh. Next to the marsh was a field of well-grown crops. A farmer, holding a bow and arrows, was patrolling carefully by the crop field. He had walked back and forth several times, and everything around was the same as usual — there seemed to be nothing that would threaten the soon-to-ripen crops.
The farmer got tired from walking, so he sat down by the marsh to rest. Suddenly, he noticed the reed catkins beside him falling one after another. Looking back, he saw large patches of reed catkins in the marsh falling rustlingly. “Strange, there’s no wind right now, and I didn’t touch the reeds either. Why are the reed catkins falling ” He felt a sudden sense of tension and became alert at once. He walked softly towards the place where the reed catkins were falling. As he got closer, he heard a rustling sound, which grew louder and louder. When he approached, he saw through the reed stalks a tiger jumping and frolicking there. It seemed extremely happy, tearing at something, leaping joyfully, and looking as if it owned the vast reed thicket all to itself.
Even though the farmer had come so close, the tiger was still playing to its heart’s content and didn’t notice anyone approaching at all. However, the farmer thought the tiger had seen him. He immediately nocked an arrow to the bowstring as he usually did and hid himself. When he saw the tiger roar and jump towards him again, he aimed at the tiger’s chest, and the arrow flew off the string with a “swish”. The tiger fell to the ground immediately, and a large patch of reed catkins was stirred up by it.
The farmer stepped forward and only then did he find a dead roe deer under the dead tiger. It turned out that the tiger was so happy about catching the roe deer that it forgot all the dangers around it!
Moral
After catching its prey, the tiger was so overly excited that it lost all sense of its surroundings. Unexpectedly, it was easily shot dead by the farmer with a single arrow. This story tells us that we must keep a calm mind at all times — not to be arrogant when we succeed, nor to be discouraged when we fail. We should be modest and prudent as we learn and make progress.
