Bian Que Talks About Illness
During the Spring and Autumn Period, there was a very famous doctor named Bian Que in the State of Cai. He had excellent medical skills and could accurately diagnose illnesses by observing a person’s words and facial expressions. One day, he went to visit Duke Huan of Cai. After standing beside the duke for a short while, he examined the duke’s face and then said earnestly, “Your Highness, you are ill. The illness is now on the surface of your skin. You need to treat it as soon as possible; otherwise, it will get worse.”
Duke Huan felt puzzled. “I’m perfectly fine. How could I be ill Probably doctors like to treat people who are not sick to show off their great medical skills,” he thought. So he refused Bian Que, saying, “I have no illness.” Bian Que had to leave disappointed.
Ten days later, Bian Que went to visit Duke Huan again. After staring at the duke for a long time, he said, “Your Highness, your illness has spread to the layer between your skin and muscles. Let me treat you, or it will get even worse.” Duke Huan couldn’t help but get angry. “Why does Bian Que always think I’m ill Even if you’re a famous doctor, you shouldn’t talk about a healthy person like this,” he thought. This time, he didn’t even bother to answer Bian Que. Bian Que had no choice but to leave again.
Another ten days passed, and Bian Que visited Duke Huan a third time. While talking to the duke, he observed the duke’s expression and manner again. Then he said anxiously, looking very worried, “Your Highness, your illness has now spread to your stomach and intestines. It needs urgent treatment. If we miss the best time for treatment, it will get worse!” This time, Duke Huan was very angry. His face turned pale with anger, and he glared at Bian Que sharply—he almost ordered Bian Que to leave. Seeing this, Bian Que knew that talking more would be useless. He sighed deeply and left anxiously.
Time passed quickly, and another ten days went by. It was time for Bian Que to visit Duke Huan again, but he didn’t show up. Once, when he saw Duke Huan from a distance on the road, he turned around and walked away immediately. Duke Huan felt a little angry and confused. “Bian Que always kept talking to me whenever he saw me before. What’s wrong with him today ” So he specially sent someone to ask Bian Que the reason.
Bian Que said to the messenger, “If a person’s illness is on the surface of the skin, it can be cured by applying hot water. If it has reached the layer between the skin and muscles, acupuncture can cure it. If it has spread to the stomach and intestines, it can be healed by using the right medicine. But once the illness has gone deep into the bones and marrow, one can only leave it to fate—there’s no medicine to cure it. Now, His Highness’s illness has reached his bones and marrow. I can do nothing about it either!”
Five days later, Duke Huan felt pain all over his body. He was confined to bed, suffering terribly, and sent someone to find Bian Que. But Bian Que had already fled to the State of Qin. Duke Huan, who had refused to listen to the doctor’s advice, finally died of his illness.
Moral
This story tells us that we must stop illnesses and other bad habits at an early stage to prevent them from getting worse. We should also be open to accepting good advice from others and not be stubborn all the time. If we wait until the illness becomes incurable or a disaster happens, it will be impossible to make amends.
