Bo Le Pities the Fine Horse

Days flowed by like running water. Day after day of hard work had gradually made the fine steed—once able to run a thousand li a day—grow old. Its body was no longer strong and vigorous, its eyes no longer bright and sharp, and even its neighs were low, as if it had no strength left.
One day, the fine horse was pulling a cart of salt up Mount Taihang. The mountain road was rough and uneven. The poor old horse stretched its hooves with great effort, but it panted heavily after taking just a few steps. Its knees began to bend, and its tail could no longer flick. It tried to cheer itself up, but even after using all its strength, it made no difference. When it reached the middle of the mountain, its hoofs were worn out, it foamed at the mouth, and sweat poured all over its body. It really couldn’t walk anymore, so it had to lie down halfway to rest. Thinking of the days when it could run a thousand li a day without feeling tired, the old horse couldn’t help shedding tears of sorrow.
Just then, Bo Le—famous all over the world for his ability to tell good horses from bad ones—happened to pass by in a horse-drawn cart. When he saw the old horse struggling in the middle of the mountain, he quickly jumped off the cart. He recognized this horse: it was the fine steed he had been going through great hardships to find. Seeing the horse in such a state, Bo Le felt very sad. He gently stroked the old horse’s back, crying with pity. His tears fell on the horse’s body. The old horse couldn’t help but tremble a little in its heart—was there still someone who recognized it Moreover, Bo Le took off his outer robe and covered the horse with it. In an instant, a warm feeling rushed into the fine horse’s heart. It struggled to stand up, lowered its head and snorted, then raised its head gracefully, widened its eyes, lifted its front hooves into the air, and neighed loudly towards the empty valley. The loud neigh reached the sky, seeming more pleasant than the sound of musical instruments like bells and chimes. When its front hooves landed, they shook the ground with a “crackle”.
Bo Le was shocked for a moment, but soon he was deeply moved. He understood that the reason the horse had used all its strength to react like this was because it knew it had finally found someone who truly understood it.
Moral
Bo Le could recognize a good horse. He didn’t dislike the fine steed for being old and weak; instead, he cherished it wholeheartedly. That’s why the fine horse, when meeting Bo Le in trouble, was so moved that it neighed loudly. A fine steed longs most to meet someone like Bo Le, just as a talented person hopes most to find a soulmate who understands them. If the fine steed in the story had never met Bo Le, no one might have realized it was a rare, thousand-li horse even until it died.
