After we lost Indigo, I got a call from the Bed ‘n’ Biscuit. One of their customers was dying, and her dog, Chloe, needed a home. Given our recent loss, they asked, might our family be interested in adopting her
They had to be kidding. After Indigo, we would never get another dog. Ever.
It had just been a few years earlier, it seemed, that Indigo — a black Lab — had first burst through our door. Her shiny black fur caught the light, and her energy never seemed to run out. However, she had a nose for trouble. On one occasion, I came home to find that she’d eaten a five-pound bag of flour. She was covered in white powder, and flour paw prints were everywhere. I asked the dog what on earth had happened, and Indy just looked at me with a glance that said I couldn’t imagine what you were referring to.
Time raced by. Our children grew up and went off to college. The mirror, which had reflected a young mom when Indigo first arrived, now showed a woman in late middle age. I had eye surgery. I began to lose my hearing. We all turned gray: me, my husband, the dog.
In August 2017, I took Indigo for one last walk. She was slow and unsteady on her paws. She looked up at me mournfully. You did say you’d take care of me when the time came, she said. You promised, Jenny. She died that month, a tennis ball by her side.
I told the Bed ‘n’ Biscuit we were sorry, but we wouldn’t be adopting any more dogs. Then one morning, as I was passing the Bed ‘n’ Biscuit in my car, I pulled over. I could at least lay eyes upon this Chloe. What harm could it do But she had such a soft face.
When Chloe entered our house, she was cautious, uncertain. She spent hours that first day going to every corner, sniffing things out. Finally she sat down by the fireplace, where Indigo used to belong, and gave me a look. If you wanted, she said, I would stay with you.
24. Why did the Bed ‘n’ Biscuit contact the writer
A. They wanted to sell a dog.
B. They were sharing sad news.
C. They were anxious about Indigo’s conditions.
D. They were looking for a new home for a dog.
25. Which words best describe Indigo
A. Loyal but violent. B. Playful and naughty.
C. Curious and cautious. D. Uncertain but well-behaved.
26. What does the underlined sentence imply
A. Visiting Chloe was a harmless curiosity.
B. Visiting Chloe could definitely change her decision.
C. The writer was making her regular visit to the Bed ‘n’ Biscuit.
D. The writer was worrying about the request of the Bed ‘n’ Biscuit.
27. What is the main idea of this passage
A. The family’s decision to adopt Chloe despite initial hesitation.
B. Bed 'n' Biscuit helps connecting animals with families in need.
C. The process of saying goodbye to Indigo and opening the door to Chloe.
D. The family’s grief after Indigo’s death and refusal to adopt another dog.

It’s nearly exam time again. How to prepare well for an exam Suggestions run as long as the history of the exam. Besides those long-accepted traditional methods, many better learning strategies have long been scientifically explored, tested and recommended.
According to the current scientific research, some study methods popular with students aren’t actually very effective. Although highlighting text is one of the top tips, students are easy to get so absorbed in the highlighting that it’s not certain they are learning anything useful. “You need to do more than just highlight information with your favorite highlighters and colours. You need to go back and make flashcards of all the important concepts and test yourself on them.” That’s a point made by John Dunlosky, Professor of Psychology at Kent State University in the US. By repeatedly testing yourself on something over a period of time, say, weeks or months, students strengthen the pathways between neurons-or nerve cells-in the brain. And the more often they do this distributed practice, the easier it becomes to strengthen information.
Some prefer the cramming method-trying and learning lots of information in a short period of time. However, Dunlovsky commented that it doesn’t work on some subjects, such as language learning. It’s far more effective to join a conversation class and practise speaking every week than to practise for hours in front of the mirror the night before the oral exam!
Whatever the method is, making different types of associations with what you’re trying to learn is meant to be effective. Professor Dunlovsky recommends visual associations. Students are encouraged to develop a more vivid mental picture of what they’re reading. That’ll help quite a bit for some kinds of studies-maybe history and language and so on. As for spelling difficult words, students can try putting the first letters of a sentence together, like big elephants cause accidents under small elephants spells “because”.
28 What does the writer mean in the first paragraph
A. Tradition methods are out of date.
B. Long suggestions often work very well.
C. Modern methods are more widely accepted.
D. Advice on preparations for exams has never been stopped.
29. What would Dunlosky possibly agree
A. Repeated test can help remember better.
B. Creating mind map is very effective.
C. Highlighting is important to learn anything useful.
D. Practising before the night of the exam is of great use.
30. How does the writer develop the passage
A. By borrowing words from experts. B. By introducing the ideas of an expert.
C. By giving some typical examples. D. By criticizing some ineffective practice.
31. What would be the best title of the passage
A. Survival Skills in the Exams!
B. Preparations The Earlier, the Better!
C. Various Methods Effectiveness Speaks!
D. The Expert Guides You to Pass Exams!

In modern society, many people are slacking off while working. But according to a new study, engaging your brain actively at work can benefit you in more ways than just advancing your career — it may also safeguard your cognitive abilities and help prevent dementia(痴呆) as you get older.
The significant study, published in Neurology, analyzed health and occupational data on 7,000 Norwegians who were followed from their 30s until they retired in their 60s. “Many other studies on this topic have only looked at the most recent jobs that people have,” said lead author Dr. Trine Edwin, a researcher at University of Oslo, “but due to the national database we have in Norway, we were able to follow people over much of their lifetimes.”
To do the analysis, Edwin categorized the cognitive demands of 305 occupations in Norway. More cognitively demanding jobs were not based on routine tasks, even though repetition was required at times. “There were lawyers, doctors, accountants, and people in public service in this group, but the most common occupation was teaching,” Edwin said, “as effective communication outside of the classroom and school matters. It always depends on teachers’ understandings of students’ different situations and teachers’ empathy.”
Having a routine job with little mental stimulation during your 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s is linked to a 66% higher risk of mild cognitive impairment and a 37% greater risk of dementia after the age of 70, when compared with having an occupation — that requires more complex thinking. “The occupational environment is vital in promoting cognitive well-being.” said Edwin. “Similarly, just like we can use physical exercise to grow and maintain our muscles, exercising our brain through more challenging work assignments seems to help fight dementia.”
“While I’d guess that people at risk for dementia would be well served by taking advantage of professional advancement opportunities, learning new job tasks, and refining their skills at work over a period of time, further studies will need to clarify which specific activities have the most brain healthy benefits,” Edwin added.
32. What does the underlined phrase “slacking off” in Paragraph 1 mean
A. working hard B. taking breaks C. showing laziness D. focusing fully
33. Why is Edwin’s research remarkable
A. Because it focused on emerging industries.
B. Because it drew inspiration from past studies.
C. Because it tracked the subjects for a long term.
D. Because it studied Norwegians of a certain age.
34. What makes teaching a cognitively demanding job
A. The emotional labor it involves.
B. The number of students and parents.
C. The complete lack of repetitive tasks.
D. The harmonious relationship it creates.
35. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. Activities that can refine people’s skills at work.
B. A recommendation for the future research direction.
C. Tips for people who want professional advancement.
D. Job tasks that can provide new learning opportunities.

By thinking and using habits like great scientists, we can learn how to change our way of thinking and come up with new ideas. 36
Constantly ask questions. One thing that curious young children always do with their parents is ask questions. “Why is the sky blue ” “Why does a dog bark ” 37 Scientists also constantly ask questions. You have to continue asking questions if you want to keep learning.
Share your results. 38 Scientists often find solutions after knowing the findings of other scientists' experiments. In study, share your results with your classmates and you can learn from others’ results.
39 You’re rarely ever going to get something perfect on the first try. When you don’t get it right, learn from it. To a scientist, failures or any negative result is not a bad thing.
Challenge assumptions. Scientists like to challenge conventional thoughts. They do it by experimenting with the assumption and then test it to see if the results are true. 40 Make basic assumptions about your work or personal life and then find a way to experiment with them to see if your assumptions are really true.
Work with others.
We all should do the same thing.
Accept failure and then learn from it.
Kids do this because they want to learn.
Here are some habits that can help you think like a scientist.
For scientists, it’s important to share the results of their findings.
Proving something is wrong is just as useful as proving something is right.

One weekend in July, Jane and her husband, Tom, had driven three hours to camp overnight by a lake in the forest. Unfortunately, on the way an unpleasant subject came up and they started to quarrel. By the time they reached the lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom, “I'm going to find a better spot for us to camp” and walked away.
With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had climbed to a high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing but forest and, far beyond, a snowcapped mountaintop. She suddenly realized that she was lost.
“Tom!” she cried. “Help!”
No reply. If only she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom. Jane kept moving, but the farther she walked, the more confused she became. As night was beginning to fall, Jane was so tired that she had to stop for the night. Lying awake in the dark, Jane wanted very much to be with Tom and her family. She wanted to hold him and tell him how much she loved him.
Jane rose at the break of day, hungry and thirsty. She could hear water trickling(滴落) somewhere at a distance. Quickly she followed the sound to a stream. To her great joy, she also saw some berry bushes. She drank and ate a few berries. Never in her life had she tasted anything better. Feeling stronger now, Jane began to walk along the stream and hope it would lead her to the lake.
As she picked her way carefully along the stream, Jane heard a helicopter. Is that for me Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above. A few minutes later, another helicopter flew overhead. Jane took off her yellow blouse, thinking that she should go to an open area and flag them if they came back again.

Learning by Doing: Embracing Lei Feng’s Spirit through Labour
On the special day of March 5th, our school launched a labour practice activity at the local nursing home. We were excited to put Lei Feng's spirit into action.
When we arrived, we started cleaning the rooms. We swept the floors and tidied up the furniture. After that, we sat with the elderly, chatting and laughing. We also helped in the garden, pulling out weeds and planting new flowers.
This activity was extremely rewarding. It made me realize the significance of Lei Feng's selfless dedication. Every act of kindness, no matter how small, matters. I'm eager to take part in more activities like this to carry forward this noble spirit.
读后续写范文
But no more helicopters came and it was getting dark again. Immediately, an absolute darkness ruled the forest. Exhausted and scared, Jane lay down near a stone, missing her family at a distance. All the fantastic memory crowded in and she couldn’t help crying, “Hadn’t I quarreled with Tom, walked away and climbed to the high place, I wouldn’t be trapped in this awful place, confronted with the danger of dying.” She regretted with endless anxiety, and then became asleep with shining tears in her eyes.
It was daybreak when Jane woke up. Weak as she was, she struggled to her feet, continuing searching for assistance. To her great joy, she found a big open area and a helicopter was flying overhead again and again. Eager and excited, she flagged her yellow blouse and spared no effort to yell so as to attract others’ attention. Fortunately, she was eventually noticed and brought into the helicopter. There, she saw her husband, a man staring at her, wearing an expression of relief. As tightly as possible, she hugged him and was too thrilled to say anything. Besides, they agreed never to quarrel again, determining to live the life to the fullest.
