Power of Public Speaking has partnered with ASI Innovation Labs to integrate artificial intelligence into the Pops Classroom platform for improving public speaking skills. The first project is the Pops Advisor which provides an automatic evaluation of students’ video presentations with visual feedback.
The Advisor offers on-demand comments to students practicing public speaking from anywhere. This flexibility benefits instructors, who can be as hands-on or hands-off during practice. While students can operate autonomously with the tool, instructors can also choose to keep track of students’ progress.
Criteria
Using machine learning models, the Pops Advisor analyzes the following criteria:
Delivery Introduction Body Conclusion
Vocal Style Vocal Quality Vocal Filler Eye Contact Body Language Credibility Attention Central Idea Preview Connective Support Language Connective Credibility Organization Signaling Ending Summary Memorable Ending Credibility
Feedback
The presenter receives feedback on the above four categories. And this feedback is given in the following formats:
Recommendations
To provide presenters with valuable feedback for the next practice, recommendations focus on specific aspects needing improvement. For instance, the recommendation can be “Your message is clear, but be sure you are grabbing your audience’s attention in your introduction to ensure they are listening.”
Speech Metrics (指标)
Useful speech metrics serve as quantitative descriptors on several aspects of the presentation including number of words, total presentation time, speaking rate and vocal fillers percentage.
Pops Advisor can be used in any classroom setting where students are presenting, particularly in the Basic Public Speaking Course. When you are considering what can be achieved by your students toward skill development in a single school semester, Pops Advisor increases the overall development.

“It was finding academia too “esoteric (深奥难懂的)” that led him to seek out a less complicated path: to help the world simplify its food,” the famed chef and author Yotam Ottolenghi said.
His outstanding style of cooking has been accepted across the globe. Focusing on simple ingredients(原料) and treating food as a way to bring friends and family together, Ottolenghi’s become a celebrated chef, a best-selling author and a touchstone for home cooks looking to integrate global flavours into their everyday rotations(轮换).
Having parents who cooked helped shape Ottolenghi’s path. However, it was the sense of belonging that came with cooking — not family expectations — that truly drew him in. There was a quiet expectation that he would probably become an academic. But rather than having a sudden insight about his future path, the 56-year-old chef saw the kitchen as a space for curiosity and play.
Before making his name in the culinary (烹饪的) world, Ottolenghi studied philosophy but found the subject matter too “esoteric”. Instead of that very specialized field, he turned his focus to something simpler, literally.
In 2018, following the success of his Notting Hill café and shop, Ottolenghi published his fifth cookbook, Simple, distilling all the techniques and preparations that he’d become known for into something approachable.
Ottolenghi thinks food is a language that everybody understands. The books were a way for fans of the restaurant and of Ottolenghi’s pared-down, flavour-forward recipes to access that world at home. He hopes to be part of a movement to take cooking from being an unpleasant task into something healing and enjoyable.
That pared-down approach has even turned “Ottolenghi” into an adjective term— used to describe food that offers high influence with few ingredients(原料) and simple techniques. He remains humble, putting the focus back on his desire to make cooking comforting.
“Food really is one of those activities that shouldn’t cause anxiety. It’s as simple as that,” he said.
24. Why did Ottolenghi shift his focus from philosophy to cooking
A. He felt philosophy abstract and complex.
B. He found cooking more financially rewarding.
C. His family had high expectations of him.
D. He wanted to follow in his parents’ footsteps.
25. According to Ottolenghi, cooking can be a way to ________.
A. provide comfort and joy
B. achieve success with less effort
C. create the most delicious dishes
D. demonstrate a sense of security
26. Which can be described by the adjective term “Ottolenghi”
A. An academic lecture on food.
B. Traditional Chinese formal meal.
C. Roasted vegetables with butter.
D. A complicated cooking technique.
27. What can we learn about Ottolenghi’s cooking style
A. It makes cooking more inaccessible.
B. It introduces a new trend of simplifying.
C. It promotes the integration of global flavors.
D. It encourages people to cook healthy meals.
C
Like a literal breath of fresh air, so-called “micro-forests” represent a green practice, boosting the quality of life in many of the world’s polluted and overcrowded urban centers.
These small areas of densely (稠密地) planted woodland trees, also known as mini-forests or pocket forests, allow communities to manage the effects of climate change in a small way, but offer enormous benefits to the environment and local people, as they restore soil, air and water quality. These mini-forests are proving a magnet for various animal and plant species, which offer human beings the chance to learn more about nature. Magically becoming self-sustaining over time, they are a way to make reimagined urban life a reality.
Significantly, mini-forests, as one of their nonprofit facilitators SUGi outlines, serve to build social bonds in communities as well, as they come together to enjoy and sustain new natural settings. They can also regenerate and beautify neglected (被忽视的) plots in cities such as former basketball courts, and disused parking lots and playgrounds, for instance.
According to the UN’s State of the World’s Forests Report from 2020, over 440 million hectares (公顷) of forest have been lost to other uses since 1990. Now, more than half of the global population lives in urban areas, but the access to green spaces is limited. The good news is that micro-forests in cities can offer an important chance to fight against deforestation and enlarge green spaces.
Euro News details some of the many exciting micro-forests that have taken root globally. Nonprofit Earthwatch Europe, for instance, has planted 285 of them since 2022. Their plots are made up of 600 trees. A tree-planting program aiming to restore biodiversity and reintroduce native species, SUGi, has created 230 pocket forests in 52 cities around the world, from Toulouse in France, to Madrid in Spain, and Saint George in Romania.
28. What can be inferred from the comparison of micro-forests to "a literal breath of fresh air" in Paragraph 1
A. They physically improve air quality through tree growth.
B. They symbolize hope for green city transformation.
C. Their impact is temporary but noticeable in polluted cities.
D. They are a fresh concept hard to gain recognition.
29. The double black word is closest in meaning to:
A. barrier B. appeal C. challenge D. threat
30. What do the examples of "former basketball courts, disused parking lots" in Paragraph 3 mean
A. The economic cost of maintaining urban green spaces.
B. The adaptability of micro-forests in transforming neglected areas.
C. The resistance from communities to replacing recreational spaces.
D. The preference for micro-forests over traditional parks.
31. What does the UN’s 2020 report (Paragraph 4) imply about micro-forests
A. They are a replacement for large-scale reforestation efforts.
B. Their impact is insignificant compared to global deforestation.
C. They address a critical gap in urban green space accessibility.
D. They require international funding to expand effectively.
D
A company called Colossal Biosciences has created thick-haired mice that they are calling"Colossal Woolly Mice". These mice are a step toward the company's goal of creating the extinct woolly mammoth (猛犸象).
Colossal focuses on replacing extinct animals that went extinct long ago. Its main project is to recreate woolly mammoths. These mammoths, which looked like hairy elephants, died out about 4,000 years ago after the last ice age.
Colossal isn't trying to bring woolly mammoths back to life. Instead, it wants to change Asian elephant DNA to create an animal similar to a woolly mammoth. The company believes this could help restore balance to the Arctic environment. Some scientists question this.
Actually, working with Asian elephants would be very difficult. They are endangered and take 22 months to have a baby. So, Colossal focuses on mice instead. Mice are more manageable, cost-effective, simpler to handle, and have a quicker reproductive cycle.
For the experiment, researchers looked at how woolly mammoths stayed warm, focusing on their long, thick hair. They compared mammoth DNA to elephant DNA.
Using CRISPR (a gene-editing technology), they edited mouse DNA to change not just one gene, but as many as seven genes at one time. This made the experiment special.
The results were striking. Lead scientist Beth Shapiro said,“We ended up with adorable mice that have longer, woolly, golden coats.”This is good news for Colossal. Since they plan to use elephant DNA to create something like a mammoth, they will need to edit many genes— perhaps as many as 85. The company is pleased that it has been able to target these genes for hair so accurately.
Many experts are impressed with Colossal's ability to edit many genes at once. But not everyone thinks the woolly mice are a big deal. Some people question the company's plans to bring back extinct animals. They say it might be better to help animals that are currently endangered. However, Colossal believes its work could be of assistance in many situations, including protecting endangered animals.
32. What is the main goal of Colossal Biosciences
A. To create a new kind of mouse called"Colossal Woolly Mice".
B. To change the DNA of Asian elephant .
C. To clone woolly mammoths for scientific research.
D. To restore extinct animals like woolly mammoth.
33. Why did Colossal choose mice for their experiments
A. They are not in danger of extinction. B. They have a relative longer lifespan.
C. Their genes are much simpler to target. D. They are cheaper and reproduce faster.
34. What does Colossal Biosciences think of its work
A. Fruitless. B. Beneficial. C. Moral. D. Efficient.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. Conservation vs. De-exinction: A Modern Dilemma
B. Mice with Golden Coats: A Breakthrough in mammoth recreation
C. The Future of Genetic Research: Advancements in CRISPR Technology
D. Reviving the Past: Colossal Biosciences and the Woolly mammoth Project

Ballet was a way of life in Kelly’s family. Her elder sister Serena was now dancing at a top college. Though Kelly’s mom always wanted her to follow in her sister’s footsteps and Kelly herself was good at ballet, her love for ballet had faded years before, and she was eager for a new challenge.
One day at school, as Kelly left the dance studio, she walked past the gym, fascinated by boxers training inside the boxing ring. She was deeply impressed by how hard they hid and how fast they moved. In fact, she’d long been attracted to boxing.
She pulled a piece of paper from her backpack. On the familiar Oakwood High School Club Sign-up Sheet was the phrase:BOXING CLUB TRYOUT(选拔).That was what Kelly really wanted to do. She knew her mom had high expectations for her when it came to ballet. Tired of trying to keep up with her sister, Kelly was ready to carve out her own path.
The next day, she gathered her courage and told Serena about her new passion. At first, Serena didn’t understand and thought she was just joking. But when she saw Kelly was serious, she replied, “ You know Mom wants you to be a ballet dancer, right Besides, boxing is only for boys, and you’re so good at ballet. Lean into your strength, Kelly.”
“But this is where I want to put my strength,” Kelly insisted,“and what exactly does ‘ only for boys’ means, anyway Boxing is a sport for everyone !” Gradually, touched by her determination and passion, Serena began to understand and support her. Kelly could feel it. Her sister was going to respect her decision, no matter what. But that was nothing compared to the preparations for the tryout, where she was required to show her footwork and punching abilities with other candidates. Boxing didn’t come natural to Kelly, but she had made up her mind to stick with her choice.

67.读后续写
Paragraph 1:
Then Kelly began her training, keeping it a secret from her mom. Every day after school, she would rush to the gym, her heart pounding with both excitement and fear of being discovered. She practiced tirelessly, her punches growing stronger and her footwork more precise. What she didn’t know was that her mom had already noticed her absence from ballet classes. Instead of confronting her, her mom secretly asked Serena to keep an eye on Kelly and support her. Serena, touched by her sister’s determination, began sending her encouraging messages and even asking her boxer-friend helped her with training tips. Kelly felt a strange sense of support but had no idea it was coming from her mom.
Paragraph 2:
The following Monday, results of the boxing tryout were posted. Kelly’s hands trembled as she scanned the list, and when she saw her name, she let out a cry of joy. She ran home, bursting with excitement, and found her mom waiting with a knowing smile. “Mom, I made the boxing team!” Kelly exclaimed, her eyes shining with pride. Her mom hugged her tightly and said, “I’ve always known, Kelly. I just wanted you to follow your heart. Dreams come in all sizes, but the ones you love are the best.” Kelly was stunned but overwhelmed with gratitude. For the first time, she realized that her mom’s silence had been her way of saying, “I believe in you.”
