15 TH OCT 2023 CULTUREGazelle Twin, a composer, producer, and musician, opens up about being a conceptual artist and establishing a unique identity ahead of the release of her new album (专辑), Black Dog. Q: Would you describe your music as conceptual A: Conceptual is a good term. I don’t make music just for the sake of making music. My records are inspired by themes. I spend a considerable amount of time before writing the music, learning about subjects related to the theme. Then I work on the structure of the album. Ideas can change. For example, Black Dog was originally about ghosts (幽灵), but I ended up with an album about my childhood experiences, through to adulthood and parenthood, and the anxiety and fear that has been with me during that time. Q: Throughout the album, there is a sense of an observer. Is that person yourself, or another presence A: Both. There is the voice of depression and anxiety, and also this other person you know is always there. I thought of having this ominous presence (不祥之兆) around you. There is also that sense of being out in the world, as a woman, aware of my vulnerability (脆弱). For example, just going for a walk is never simple. We have to build protective instincts around ourselves. Q: When you started out, did you have any idea of the kind of artist you wanted to be A: I knew I didn’t want to fit a fixed style or be restricted by being female. I wanted to be flexible. I like to think in scale and of more than I can achieve as one person. I like artists with unique identities. Q: What would be your advice to anyone with ambitions to become a musician A: Follow your instincts. Put yourself out there without pressure to be “finished”. Absorb things, experiment, and allow yourself to follow a journey where you don’t know where you will end up. Being successful commercially takes a team and time. You have to love it and be in it for the long journey. Q: Fast forward ten years, where do you want to be A: I would love to carry on following my instincts and making albums. I would like more of a collection of TV and film scores because I enjoy writing scores and cooperative work.
21.Why is Gazelle Twin’s music conceptual
A.Her records are usually about ghosts. B.The album’s structure is a top priority.
C.The word “conceptual” itself is attractive. D.Her music is highly motivated by themes.
22.In the second part of the interview, “this other person” most likely represents __________.
A.spiritual growth B.vivid imagination
C.inner self-awareness D.external intervention
23.Which of the following can be inferred from Gazelle Twin’s response in the interview
A.She tends to take the bigger picture into account.
B.Her future planning is profit-driven to some extent.
C.Black Dog has already become a hit album worldwide.
D.She expresses willingness to help the potential musicians.

As the curtain on the stage falls slowly, Lincoln Center bursts into thunderous applause. Chinese ballet dancer Chen Zhenwei once again impresses the audience from all over the world with his wonderful performance.
“It’s incredible. I never thought my dream would come true so soon,” Chen said, recalling the scene when he got the news in May 2022 that he was promoted to the principal (首席) dancer of the New York City Ballet (NYCB), the company’s first Chinese and fourth Asian principal dancer in 74 years.
Founded by George Balanchine, the father of US ballet, NYCB is one of the leading ballet companies in the world, with 95 percent of the company’s dancers coming from the School of American Ballet, and only 5 percent selected from top dancers around the world.
To stand out from the top dancers, Chen has made every effort. “Whether you can become a principal or not depends on many factors. You need excellent physical condition, good teachers, strong support from family, continuous practice, good luck and opportunity, as well as a healthy body. All of these are too important to be without,” he said.
Born in Huizhou, Guangdong Province in 1992, Chen became attached to dance as a child. However, his parents preferred that he become a doctor or a lawyer in the future. The boy then wrote a seven-page letter to his parents describing his determination to study dance. Thanks to the sincere letter, Chen finally gained the support of his family and started his dream-seeking journey.
Chen, with a Chinese cultural background, is also trying hard to promote Chinese culture on the Western ballet stage. Liang Zhu, a ballet adaptation of an ancient Chinese legend designed by him, was performed at Lincoln Center in New York. “This is a love story from China. I hope that US audiences can enjoy our wonderful Chinese culture,” Chen said.
24.Which word can replace the underlined word “incredible” in paragraph 2
A.Strange. B.Alarming. C.Harmonious. D.Unbelievable.
25.What can be learned about NYCB
A.It includes mostly Asian dancers. B.It was set up by an American.
C.It is the best ballet company in the world. D.It has only five percent of the top dancers in the world.
26.What can be used to describe Chen
A.Generous. B.Imaginative. C.Determined. D.Bold.
27.What does the last paragraph focus on
A.Chen’s decision to be a ballet dancer. B.Chen’s parents’ expectations of him.
C.Chen’s efforts to spread Chinese culture. D.A famous story in ancient China.

Everything we know suggests that the universe is unusual. It is flatter, smoother, larger and emptier than a “typical” universe predicted by the known laws of physics. If we reached into a hat filled with pieces of paper, each with the specifications of a possible universe written on it, it is unlikely that we would get a universe anything like ours in one pick—or even a billion.
The challenge that cosmologists face is to make sense of this specialness. One approach to this question is inflation—the hypothesis (假设) that the early universe went through a stage of fast expansion. At first, inflation seemed to do the trick. A simple version of the idea gave correct predictions for the spectrum of fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background.
But a closer look shows that we have just moved the problem further back in time. To make inflation happen at all requires us to fine-tune the initial conditions of the universe. And unless inflation is highly tuned, it leads to a runaway process of universe creation. As a result, some cosmologists (宇宙学家) suggest that there is not one universe, but an infinite number, with a huge variety of properties: the multiverse. There are an infinite number of universes in the collection that are like our universe and an infinite number that are not. But the proportion of infinity to infinity is undefined, and can be made into anything the theorist wants. Thus the multiverse theory has difficulty making any firm predictions and threatens to take us out of the area of science.
These other universes are unobservable and because chance dictates the random distribution of properties across universes, suggesting the existence of a multiverse does not let us get to anything about our universe beyond what we already know. As attractive as the idea may seem, it is basically a sleight of hand, which turns an explanatory failure into an apparent explanatory success. The success is empty because anything that might be observed about our universe could be explained as something that must, by chance, happen somewhere in the multiverse.
We started out trying to explain why the universe is so special, and we end up being asked to believe that our universe is one of an infinite number of universes with random properties. This makes me suspect that there is a basic but unexamined assumption about the laws of nature that must be overturned.
Cosmology has new questions to answer. Not just what are the laws, but why are these laws the laws How were they chosen We can’t just hypothesise what the initial conditions were at the big bang, we need to explain those initial conditions. Thus we are in the position of a computer program asked to explain its inputs. It is clear that if we are to get anywhere, we need to invent new methods, and perhaps new kinds of laws, to gain a scientific description of the universe as a whole.
28.According to the passage, which of the following statements is true of our universe
A.There are several hypotheses about its early stage.
B.There are more than one billion universes similar to ours.
C.It is expanding at a greater speed that it did at the stage of the big bang.
D.It is different from the predictions made according to the laws of physics.
29.What does the writer imply about the hypothesis of inflation
A.It hasn’t been challenged. B.It doesn’t make much sense.
C.It is by far the most reasonable approach. D.It is the simple version of a complicated idea.
30.Which word in the passage is similar in meaning to the phrase “sleight of hand” (paragraph 4)
A.process B.prediction C.trick D.infinity
31.It can be inferred from the passage that the writer________.
A.believes the idea of the multiverse will help us to understand our universe better
B.argues there is a fixed proportion of universes like ours to those unlike ours
C.holds computer programs can work better than humans in cosmology
D.thinks some laws of nature that we take for granted may be false

The mission is simple. Arrive on foreign soil, fit in and wait. Then, when the time is right, emerge from the shadows and take over. This procedure, familiar from spy fiction as the preserve of sleeper agents, is also the strategy of certain invasive plant species.
Invasive species that stay put, known as sleeper species, are not hard-wired to do so. Their natural tendency to expand is, instead, held back by some external factor. With the climate rapidly changing, Bethany Bradley at the University of Massachusetts wondered whether alterations in temperature and rainfall had the potential to activate some sleeper species. As she reports in a paper in Biological Inuvasions, the answer is a definitive yes.
Dr Bradley and her team came to their conclusions by studying 1,795 plant species in north-eastern America identifiable as foreign but not yet locally listed as invasive. Of these, 169 were unquestionably demonstrating invasive behaviour in other parts of the world, and causing damage to their environment. That suggested they had the capacity to cause similar damage in America too.
To determine whether the conditions coming to the region would activate any of the set 169, the researchers first identified the conditions under which these species would thrive (旺盛). A number of the plants on their list were held back by the cold winters that are less and less common in the region. They also found that some other species required more rainfall than is typical.
According to the team’s findings, climate change is on track to awaken 18 sleeper species that could cause serious environmental and economic problems. Dr Bradley estimates that they will start to make themselves felt between 2040 and 2060 if something is not done soon.
The most practical course of action, in her view, is to seek these sleeper species out before they are able to spread. Removing them today may be expensive, but it will be far cheaper than trying to weed them out tomorrow.
32.What strategy do sleeper species employ
A.Rapidly expanding in new environments.
B.Patiently waiting for human intervention.
C.Remaining inactive until conditions are favorable.
D.Avoiding detection by staying in shadowy-corners.
33.What does the underlined word “hard-wired” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Slowly adapted.
B.Solidly supported.
C.Externally influenced.
D.Naturally programmed.
34.What did researchers aim to uncover by focusing on the 169 species
A.The potential risks they could pose in the future.
B.Their invasive behavior in other parts of the world.
C.The reasons why they failed to survive in America.
D.Possible ways to make them less common in America.
35.What’s Dr Bradley’s suggestion for dealing with sleeper species
A.Let nature take its course.
B.Prevention is better than cure.
C.Cutting budgets is a top priority.
D.Delay action until it’s necessary.

The Price of a Dream
I grew up poor in a family with little money and few worldly goods, but plenty of love and attention. I was happy and energetic. I understood that no matter how poor a person was, they could still afford a dream.
My dream was sports. By the time I was sixteen, I could crush a baseball, throw a ninety-mile-per-hour fastball and hit anything that moved on the football field. I was also lucky: My high-school coach was Ollie Jarvis, who taught me the difference between sticking to a dream and just showing determination. One particular incident with Coach Jarvis changed my life forever.
It was the summer between my junior and senior years, and a friend recommended me for a summer job. This meant a chance for money in my pocket — cash for hanging out with friends, certainly, money for a new bike and new clothes, and the start of savings for a house for my mother. The prospect of a summer job was appealing, and I wanted to jump at the opportunity.
Then I realized I would have to give up summer baseball to handle the work schedule, and that meant I would have to tell Coach Jarvis I wouldn’t be playing. I was fearing this, but I had to.
When I told Coach Jarvis, he was as mad as I expected him to be. “You have your whole life to work,” he said. “Your playing days are limited. You can’t afford to waste them.”
I stood before him with my head hanging, trying to think of the words that would explain to him why my dream of buying my mom a house and having money in my pocket was worth facing his disappointment in me.
“How much are you going to make at this job, kid ” he demanded. “Three twenty-five an hour,” I replied. “Well,” he asked, “is $3.25 an hour the price of a dream ”

My most unforgettable labor experience during the summer vacation was making breakfast for my parents..
On that morning, I got up really early. Boiling water first, I put noodles into the pot cautiously, with salt and oil added. Five minutes later, I placed the noodles into bowls and served them to my parents. The moment they saw what I had done, a big smile lit up their faces. A little bit exhausted but excited, I felt a great sense of pride and satisfaction. Not only did I have a better understanding of the importance of hard work, but I was inspired to be a helper more often at home.
It is labor that brings people happiness, so it’s high time that more students engaged in labor activities during their free time!
67. That question struck me like a flash of lightning. I stood there, staring at my furious coach and noticing that the light in his eyes suddenly went out. Regret and shame overwhelmed me and I wished I had not told him the stupid idea. At that moment, I decided not to give up my sports dream and dedicated myself to regular training. That whole summer, I kept catching and pitching the ball on the court, participating in every baseball game. At the end of the summer season came the long-awaited award ceremony. Finally, Coach Jarvis announced that I was elected as the best baseball player.
I went on the stage to collect the prize for the best baseball player. My legs were trembling and my head was dizzy. Standing in the center of the stage, I heard the crowd was cheering and I saw Coach Jarvis was smiling. He passed the microphone to me and invited me to say a few words. “My fellows! Never give up your dream!” I exclaimed with tears shining in my eyes. “Devotion and persistence will help you realize your dream!” I added, grabbing my trophy tightly. Coach Jarvis came close to me, throwing his arms around me. “Thank you! It is you who let me understand the value of a dream.” I murmured by his ears, my eyes overflowed with tears.
