In Britain all children have to go to school between the ages of 5 and 16. In the US children must go to school from the age of 6 to the ages between 14 and 16, depending on the state they live in.
Subjects
In England and Wales the subjects taught in schools are laid down by the National Curriculum, which was introduced in 1988 and sets out in detail the subjects that children should study and the levels of achievement they should reach by the ages of 7,11,14, and 16, when they are tested. My high school life has been filled with many ups and downs, whether it was social or academic. Even though my current high school was not my first choice, I never regretted attending Southside High School. “Since you have chosen it, then it is the best for you,” said my parents.
Up until the junior year I did not realize my capabilities (能力) as a student. Being in the IB Program, I was told that my junior year would be the toughest in all the years of high school. With this “little” piece of information, I walked into my junior year, scared of my grades. As weeks went by, I started to believe that the junior year was not as hard as everyone had said, but I was wrong. My grades were rapidly declining (下降) and by the end of the first term I had had five Cs in seven of my classes!I could not believe it — I did not want to believe it. I tried my best to get my grades up myself without any help from anyone, but my pride just made my grades worse. And I had to miss out on one of the most important speech and debate competitions all year: States. I was heartbroken. I realized that I could not survive my junior year on my own, so I had to get help fast.
Once I got a tutor, my grades went from Cs, Ds, and even some Fs, to nothing but As and Bs. I slowly started to gain my confidence back in all of my classes and even myself. By the time the third and fourth quarter came around, I had been on the honor roll twice, and I had received awards from speeches and debates, tennis and school.
Southside has taught me to always keep my head up and never give up on myself no matter what life throws at me. I am proud to be a Southside Tiger.
4. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. The writer always thought Southside High School was the best.
B. The writer’s parents persuaded her into attending Southside High School.
C. The writer has met many challenges since she attended high school.
D. Life has become easier since the writer came to Southside High School.
5. How did the writer feel when she walked into her junior year?
A. Excited. B. Worried.
C. Curious. D. Uninterested.
6. Why was the writer’s study worse and worse?
A. She didn’t work hard enough.
B. She didn’t ask others for help because of her pride.
C. She missed many important speeches.
D. No one would like to help her.
7. What important lesson has the writer learned at Southside High School?
A. Students should face challenges bravely.
B. Students should be careful in choosing school.
C. Students should be proud of their school.
D. Students should better learn about life.
C
Zhang Hua, a 17-year-old Senior Two student at Star High School, once faced great trouble with English reading. Whenever she tackled long passages in textbooks or test papers, she’d get stuck on complex sentences and unfamiliar words — often spending 15 minutes just to finish a 500-word text. Worse still, she could never grasp the main idea, so she’d make frequent mistakes in reading comprehension questions. This pushed her English test scores to around 65 out of 100, and she felt so frustrated that she even hid her test papers from her parents, worrying they’d be disappointed. “I thought I’d never get better at English reading,” she recalled.?
Last semester, her English teacher, Mr. Liu, noticed her struggle and suggested a “20-Minute Daily Reading Plan” tailored to her level. He advised her to start with easy materials: short stories from Teen Times magazine and simplified English versions of fairy tales, which have simple sentences and common words. The plan required reading for 20 minutes every evening — no more, no less — and taking quick notes: write down 3 new words (with their meanings) and 1 key sentence that summed up the passage. At first, Zhang Hua forgot to read a few times because of homework, but she set a phone reminder and asked her roommate to check on her. Slowly, it became a habit.?
After three months, the changes were clear. She now finishes a 500-word passage in 8 minutes, and she can immediately tell the main idea after reading. Her English test score jumped to 82, and she even joined the school’s English reading club. There, she shares articles she loves and discusses them with classmates — something she never dared to do before. “This plan didn’t take much time, but it taught me that small, consistent efforts work,” Zhang Hua said. “Now I don’t fear English reading anymore; I actually look forward to my 20 minutes every evening.”
8. What was the main problem Zhang Hua had with English??
A. She couldn’t speak English fluently.?
B. She struggled with English reading and scored low.?
C. She hated her English teacher, Mr. Liu.?
D. She had no time to study English.?
9. What does the underlined phrase “get stuck on” in Paragraph 1 probably mean??
A. Felt interested in and finished quickly.?
B. Couldn’t move forward or make progress with.?
C. Found easy to understand and remember.?
D. Forgot about after reading for a while.?
10. What can we infer from Zhang Hua’s experience with the “20-Minute Daily Reading Plan”??
A. The plan only works for students who are bad at English.?
B. Zhang Hua will get a perfect score in English soon.?
C. Consistent practice is helpful for improving English reading skills.?
D. Mr. Liu’s plan requires reading 2 hours every day.?
11. What is Zhang Hua’s attitude towards the “20-Minute Daily Reading Plan”??
A. Grateful, because it helped her improve and build confidence.?
B. Angry, because it took too much of her free time.?
C. Unhappy, because it didn’t change her test score.?
D. Doubtful, because she thinks it’s too simple to work.

Rainforests provide much of the world’s oxygen. People have been trying to protect them for years. But another type of forest, the cloud forest, is just as important to humans.
These forests are at the tops of mountains, generally near the equator (赤道). These wet, wooded mountaintops are mainly in African and Central and South American countries. They are called “cloud forests” because their height allows for the formation of clouds among the trees. The trees in these forests pull water out of the clouds. The water gathers on the leaves and falls into small rivers below, which flow into towns at the bottom of the mountain. The yearly rainfall in these areas is about 180 centimetres. Cloud forests can pull in up to 60 percent of that. The water is important to the plants and the people in the area. It helps them survive.
Cloud forests are also home to countless species of plants that can’t be found anywhere else. One small cloud forest has as many types of plants as there are in all of Europe. In fact, there are so many that scientists haven’t made a complete list of them yet.
These forests are being destroyed at an increasing speed. Trees are being cut down, and roads are being built in their place. Some people have a goal to get government money to protect the forests. But they have had little success so far. Another way is to take the place of the destroyed plants with new ones. That, too, has been difficult because the plants are so special. There’s plenty of work to be done, but saving the cloud forests is still possible with creative solutions.
12. Where can you probably find cloud forests?
A. In North America. B. Far from the equator.
C. In some African countries. D. At the foot of mountains.
13. How much rainfall is pulled in by the cloud forests in those areas every year?
A. About 60 cm. B. About 108 cm. C. About 180 cm. D. About 300 cm.
14. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. Europe is short of plant types. B. Scientists are working on a list.
C. Cloud forests are getting smaller. D. Cloud forests house many plants.
15. Where can we probably find the text?
A. In a storybook. B. In a travel guide.
C. In a chemistry textbook. D. In a geography magazine.
