For decades, Jean Moffatt has been reaching out over the airwaves. As an amateur (业余的) radio operator, Moffatt has connected with people worldwide. “By sending signals to satellites, I’ve talked to people from the Arctic to the Antarctic,” Moffatt said. And on Wednesday at the Ontario Science Centre, the 96-year-old got to go even further.
An amateur radio connection allowed the senior and students to speak with Commander Luca aboard the International Space Station. By connection, Moffatt told the astronaut she was very excited, admitting that this was an unrealized dream she had for many years. Then Moffatt asked if Luca could keep the space station clean and tidy, adding that as a “mature woman” she had done lots of cleaning in her life.
When Moffatt was a young girl, she moved to Toronto with her family, hoping there would be chances for a girl interested in science. She desperately wanted to go to university, but moving house placed a significant burden on their finances. Not discouraged, she took a course in amateur radio, then a popular technology, and shortly after she got her license. After retiring, Moffatt started volunteering at the Ontario Science Centre. With her radio license, she helped set up the centre’s first radio shack (无线电设备室).
The idea to connect with the International Space Station came just after Moffatt’s 36th birthday. Finally after 60 years with the help of amateur radio operators and NASA, Moffatt made her connection. While the connection wasn’t very clear, she was moved to tears, telling those who had gathered to watch that it was the “highlight” of her life.
Moffatt plans to keep volunteering at the centre, introducing younger people to the older form of technology, and to keep speaking to anyone who can pick up her signal. “It’s a technology even older than me and I love amateur radio,” Moffatt added.
4. What can we learn about Moffatt from the first two paragraphs
A. She attempted an Internet talk. B. She was an environmentalist.
C. She was into space exploration. D. She achieved a lifetime goal.
5. Why did Moffatt and her family move to Toronto
A. To get a radio license. B. To seek better opportunities.
C To attend a radio school. D. To survive financial troubles.
6. What does Moffatt plan to do further
A. Promote radio communication. B. Continue her passion for radio.
C. Start her radio shack business. D. Acquire new scientific abilities.
7. Which of the following can best describe Moffatt
A. Creative and ambitious. B. Out-spoken and energetic.
C. Passionate and determined. D. Humorous and generous.

Can a robot help speed up Christmas deliveries The city of Helsinki is finding out. A trial in Finland’s capital is using a delivery robot in two neighborhoods to see if this new, self-driving and pollution-free method could help with the holiday stress.
The HeRo robot that is being tested, is a project of Forum Virium, an innovative Finnish company. The trial will be running through the end of December 2023. The goal is to show how packages can be quickly delivered to people’s homes with great accuracy even during the holiday season.
HeRo is not just a delivery robot, it’s electric and operates without any dangerous emissions, plus it is self-navigating (导航) and talks. The delivery robot was made by the French robotics firm TwinswHeel and uses an interface created by the Finnish company LMAD. The four-wheeled vehicle can carry up to 300 kilograms and can travel up to 20 kilometers on just one charge of its lithium(锂)battery pack. HeRo uses a combination of GPS and onboard sensors(传感器)to run through the city’s streets.
HeRo can carry several orders at once. Each order is in a separate locker and customers can open their lockers electronically. In just one hour, the robot delivers packages from a few shops to people in the Ruoholahti and North J tk saari areas. No other delivery service is as fast or as clean.
This isn’t HeRo’s first appearance on Helsinki streets. From May to August 2023, there was a first phase trial. It carried packages from Würth Center (a place that gives tools and supplies for industry) to nearby workplaces. These trials are part of the international URBANE project. The project wants to find new, green ways to make logistics better for both companies and people. Soon, there will be new trials in cities in Spain and Greece. Using self-driving robots for zero-emission delivery is an idea that should be used all over the world.
8. What is the purpose of the trial in Helsinki
A. To see if robots can replace human delivery workers.
B. To find out if robots can speed up Christmas deliveries.
C. To test if robots can reduce pollution during Christmas.
D. To check if robots can improve the accuracy of deliveries.
9. Which of the following is NOT a characteristic of the HeRo robot
A. It is self-navigating. B. It has onboard sensors.
C. It can carry up to 300 kilograms. D. It can travel unlimited distances on one charge.
10. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. New trials will be expanded to other cities.
B. The URBANE project only focuses on Helsinki.
C. Zero emission delivery is already widely applied.
D. The HeRo robot has been on the streets of Helsinki only once.
11. What’s the best title for the text
A. Pollution-free Method Proves Popular B. Robots Are Helping to Deliver Packages
C. A Delivery Robot Improves Service Quality D. Helsinki Takes the Lead in Holiday Deliveries
D
In a groundbreaking study in 2024, biologists discovered that plants communicate through complex networks of fungal threads (真菌丝). When attacked by insects, bean plants release chemical signals through these threads, warning neighbouring plants to produce poison. Dr. Elena Torres, lead researcher, compares it to an “underground Internet”. “One stressed plant can activate defenses across an entire forest,” she says. This finding challenges the view that plants are passive organisms.
Sound also plays a role. Using highly sensitive microphones, scientists recorded ultrasonic pulses (超声波的) given off by corn sprouts under drought stress. When these recordings were played to other plants, their roots grew towards the sound source. “It’s as if they’re ‘hearing’ their peers’ distress,” explains Dr. Hiroshi Nakamura. In another experiment, pea plants that were exposed to the sound of caterpillars eating leaves produced higher levels of defensive chemicals. This sound signaling could change pest control in agriculture.
Critics urge caution. Dr. Emily Carter argues, “We’re personifying plants. These reactions are biochemical, not conscious communication.” Moral debates also arise: If plants sense pain, should vegan diets be reconsidered Torres responds firmly: “Plants lack nervous systems. Stress responses are survival mechanisms, not sentience.” Meanwhile, farmers in Brazil already use “plant whisperer” devices that translate leaf vibrations into data, predicting pest outbreaks days before visible damage.
The consequences are vast. Geneticists are engineering crops with enhanced signaling abilities, creating “warning systems” for droughts or diseases. In Kenya, farmers grow corn together with signal-producing plants that prevent insects naturally. “This could reduce pesticide use by 70%,” says agronomist Kwame Okafor. As research speeds up, we edge closer to a world where forests “speak”, fields “warn”, and gardens “guide” — a silent dialogue that has been going on beneath our feet for ages, now interpreted by science.
Recent advancements aim to apply plant communication commercially. A startup PhytoTech developed a sensor that interprets plant chemical SOS signals, informing farmers via app to water or fertilize. Trials in California vineyards reduced crop loss by 25%. However, critics warn against over-reliance: “Nature’s language is complex,” says ecologist Dr. Rachel Lin. “Simplifying it to apps risks missing deeper connections.”
12. How do bean plants respond to insect attacks according to Paragraph 1
A. By attracting helpful insects. B. By growing thicker leaves.
C. By producing complex sounds. D. By releasing chemical warnings.
13. What do you know about the pea plant experiment described in Paragraph 2
A. Plants ignore droughts. B. Plants prefer silence.
C. Plants respond to pest sounds. D. Plants react to water sounds.
14. What does the underlined word “sentience” mean in Paragraph 3
A. Balance. B. Feeling. C. Competition. D. Information.
15. What is Rachel Lin’s attitude towards using apps to learn plant signals
A. Favourable. B. Unclear. C. Doubtful. D. Unconcerned.

Biar Kon grew up in a shelter in Kenya, after his parents were forced to migrate from neighbouring Sudan. When he was 17, he moved to Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, to attend school.
Once he arrived, he needed to get some documents from the Sudanese embassy (大使馆) . But when he went to look for the embassy, he couldn’t find it. He asked a few people for directions, and no one knew where it was. Then an older woman tapped him on the back.
The lady said to him, “Hey, my son. ” “That was the first word, ” Kon recalled. “She said, ‘Hey, my son, how are you doing ‘” The woman told Kon that she had seen him asking questions of multiple people as they passed, and she wondered if he needed money for food, or a place to stay. Then Kon realized that the woman thought he was homeless.
“Because in Kenya, it’s very common,” Kon said. “Kids at 17, kids at 15, kids at 12—kids of any age can be on the street looking for survival. ”
They cleared up the confusion, and the woman was able to give Kon directions to the embassy. Then she told him about the deeper reason she had asked if he needed help: because of her experience as a mother.
“I wouldn’t want my child to be on the street,” the woman told him. “And anytime I see a child on the street, I feel like I have an obligation (义务) to help.”
The woman’s generosity left a deep impression on Kon. And it inspired him to pay it forward, five years later, when he moved to Boston, Massachusetts.
When he arrived there, Kon expected that everyone he saw would be well-off and successful. So he was shocked at the number of homeless people he encountered on the street.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】Dear David,
I’d like to introduce the scientist I admire most to you. He is Qian Xuesen, a patriotic, outstanding and gifted scientist.
Initially, Qian Xuesen studied Railway Mechanical Engineering, but after the Songhu Battle broke out, he shifted his major to aviation. In 1955, he returned China and was in charge of China’s space and missile programme. Under his leadership, China made steady progress in aerospace and aviation. He made great contributions to the development of China’s aerospace.
Qian Xuesen inspires me to follow my dream. I’ll work hard to make our country stronger.
Sincerely yours,
Li Hua

【答案】One possible version:
One day, outside a coffee shop, he observed an interaction between a young woman and a homeless man. The homeless man asked the young lady if she could spare change. And she said, “Why don’t you go to look for a job ” Kon reflected back to that moment five years earlier, when the woman in Nairobi had mistaken him for a homeless person. Kon was still touched by her kindness. So he went up to the man, to see what he could do. He told Kon why he was on the street—because he made a mistake when he was in high school, and he couldn’t get a job now.
After learning the young man’s story, Kon knew it was time to pass on what that kind lady had done to him. Kon bought the man some breakfast, and gave him a little bit of money. The young man was moved to tears and thanked him again and again. Today, it’s an encounter he reflects on often. For him, it was a reminder that you never know what people are going through unless you make a point to talk to them—the way the woman in Nairobi made an effort to talk to him. Kon hopes in the future he could start a non-profit to provide housing and social support for people living on the street—an idea partly inspired by his unsung hero.
