The Height of Life
Michael Stone had always dreamed of flying. His mother read him so many stories about flying that they

“You want something Work for it!”
From the age of 14, Michael started 3 as a pole vaulter (撑杆跳高运动员). He worked out every
day with weightlifting and running, and he continued to help his parents with their farm work. His mother wished
he could 4 a bit more, but his father would smile and say, “ 5 you want nothing, work for it!”
Now Michael was standing in the stadium (体育场) as one of the final two competitors in the pole vaulting
event in the National Junior Olympics. After a warm-up, he found his pole, and stepped on the runway that led to
the most challenging event of his 17-year-old life. Suddenly he became nervous. He had never experienced this
before.
Then he thought of his mother’s words. “Take deep breaths when you feel nervous.” So he did. Slowly the
nervousness was 6 . He gently put down his pole, and began to stretch out his arms and upper body. And
then, he carefully picked up his pole. He knew it was his time to fly.
As he began sprinting (冲刺) down the runway, something felt wonderfully 7 , but familiar (熟悉
的). When he took a deep breath, it happened. He began to fly just like in his childhood 8 . Only this
time did he know he wasn’t dreaming.
The loud cheers from the audience brought Michael back. He could 9 the smile on his parents’
faces. His life would never be the same. It wasn’t because he won the National Junior Olympics and set a world
record. And it wasn’t because he had just increased his personal best. It was 10 because Michael Stone

I get into position and take a deep breath. The music starts and my mind focuses on one thing: my figure
skating (花样滑冰) routine. Dressed in my shining blue dress and 1 across the ice, I feel free. I started
figure skating again in 2018 after the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games. However, relearning figure skating at
an older age is not 2 . Balancing on those 1.5 mm wide blades and stepping onto the ice for the first time
in years, feelings of excitement and fear filled me at the same time. I didn’t remember any of the 3 or
spins that I had learned as a child. To make things worse, kids much younger than me were doing double or triple
rotation jumps (旋转跳跃). I felt so 4 of place.
Did I really belong here “You have as much right to be here as anyone else,” my Olympian coach

During the course of learning new jumps and spins, falls are unavoidable. Whenever I learn a move, I
commit to practising and falling for hours on end, and there would still be a large chance that I couldn’t finish it.
Many times I’ve asked myself, “Was it really worth it So many hours of practice, and so much 7 spent
on coaching and skates, for what ” 8 the course of learning is hard, every time I feel the wind rushing
past my face on the ice, I am reminded of the reason that I started skating: this is the 9 thing I will get
to flying.
The pain is temporary, but the joy of landing that jump I have worked on for months is something I would
not 10 for the world. Fall down seven times, get up eight!
