My mother leaves at dawn to collect cans, and when she returns 12 hours later, I help her pull the shopping cart to the recycling center through the streets of Bushwick. I have kept it a secret all the time. I couldn't bear the idea of my friends knowing our family live off other people's garbage. I felt guilty for being embarrassed, but I couldn't help it. I was not ready to trust someone else. Then I took a college essay course, which required me to write an essay about what had the greatest impact on my personal growth. I chose to write about the impact my neighborhood had on me. At the end, there was just one sentence about can collecting. One day after class, my teacher asked me to discuss my essay draft. “Your story has potential; however, it is not about personal growth. Would you tell me about the can collecting ” So I was faced with sharing my secret. But he was my teacher and I trusted him so I rewrote the essay. Two days later I found out we were expected to read our essays out loud after lunch, but I felt ashamed that my peers would know. As I headed down to the cafeteria, I met up with a friend, Mason, who I always have lunch with. I was less talkative, and Mason found that I had something on my mind. I told him I was embarrassed about my family's story. “You should be proud that your family are struggling to take care of their loved ones.” This was what I needed to hear and I felt like I could finally breathe after all those years of hiding a part of myself. When we got back to class, I felt ready to read my draft out loud. After my classmates listened to my story, they said things like: “Each of our stories is unique to our experience and shapes us.” “Your being ashamed only hurts you.” “Accept your home and community, because they are your true family.”Now, when people ask me what my parents do for a living, I tell them, not with embarrassment or shame but with pride, that my parents are can collectors.24.Why did the author mention can collecting very briefly in his essay A.To highlight his family story. Scientists have raised a number of theories over the years to explain why. One holds that insects flying at night are following their nature to fly towards the brightest spot in their field of vision, which they mistake for the sky. Another suggests that insects are trying to warm themselves with the heat produced by the light. The most popular theory, though, is that insects are confusing lights with the moon or other celestial bodies (天体) that they normally use to navigate. To find out the real reason, the team carried out a first set of experiments in an insect flight area. The researchers used eight high-speed infrared (红外线的) cameras equipped with motion capture technologies to track 30 insects from three moth and two dragonfly species. They also flew lab-raised insects from six different insect orders (生物分类的目) that were too small for motion-capture technology, including fruit flies and honeybees, to make sure different insects all showed similar responses to light. Working with co-author Pablo Allen of the Council on International Educational Exchange in Monteverde, Costa Rica, the researchers put heavy cameras, lights and tripods in two field sites to gather behavioral data from insects in the wild. The team was able to confirm that insects were not beelining to the light but rather circling it as they tilted (倾斜) in an attempt to turn their backs towards it. This behavior, known as a “dorsal light response”, normally helps insects to remain on an unchanging path of flight that is properly lined to the horizon.Artificial light that arrives from a point source causes them to fly in unpredictable patterns as they try to turn their backs to what they are mistaking for the sky.Now research might have finally solved the mystery mentioned first: artificial light confuses insects’ ability to turn themselves to the horizon, confusing their sense of what is up and down and causing them to fly in circles.28. Which theory about “a moth to a flame” is accepted by most people A. They follow their nature to fly.B. They are blind to artificial light.C. They mistake artificial light for celestial bodies.D. They are attracted by the warmth of artificial light.29. What’s the author’s purpose in using the figures in Paragraph 2 A. To show the study is all-inclusive.B. To introduce the purpose of the study.C. To estimate the cost of the researchD. To stress the challenge faced by the researchers.30. What benefit can insects get from “dorsal light response” A. They can fly beyond the horizon.B. They can follow a steady flight path.C. They can turn their backs towards lights.D. They can circle the light source upside down.31. What’s the main idea of the text A. Experiments in an insect flight area are conducted.B. Insects’ strange chase for artificial light is accounted for.C. Theories on insects’ chase for artificial light vary.D. Insects’ dorsal light response is analyzed.DWe all pursue an ideal weight number for health and confidence, often using childhood memories, online calculators or BMI charts. However, Dr, Yoni Freedhoff warns these methods fail to consider individual differences. Our bodies change dramatically with age due to metabolism (新陈代谢) and lifestyle. For decades, Body Mass Index (BMI) dominated weight assessments. This simple height-weight calculation sorts people from underweight to overweight. Yet Dr. Melanie Jay from NYU points out its problems: BMI gives the same ranges for 20-year-old athletes and 70-year-old grandparents. It ignores muscle mass, bone density, and health conditions, sometimes regarding fit individuals as overweight. Recent studies show that nearly 30% of people classified as overweight by BMI actually have healthy body fat percentages and normal metabolic profiles.Newer metrics like the Body Roundness Index (BRI) focus on waist size instead of weight. “Belly fat is more dangerous than overall weight,” says D. Jay. Research indicates fat around organs produces harmful chemicals linked to diabetes and heart disease. However, even BRI has limitations—it can’t distinguish between fat types or account for medical conditions affecting belly size, such as digestive disorders.Doctors increasingly emphasize overall health markers over specific weights, “Instead of focusing on a ‘magic number,’ we examine blood pressure, cholesterol (胆固醇), sleep quality and energy levels,” notes Dr. Jay. For those with weight-related conditions, even 5-10% weight loss can significantly improve health. A 2023 study found patients who achieved modest weight reduction showed better health markers than those pursuing extreme weight loss. The healthiest weight, experts agree, isn’t found on charts but through sustainable habits, “When you eat nutritiously and stay active, your body finds its natural healthy weight,” advises Dr. Freedhoff. For some, medications or surgery may help, but the real goal is lifestyle change—not to achieve an ideal number on your scale. True health, after all, is measured not by a momentary reading on a scale, but by the daily choices that nourish both body and life.32. What does the second paragraph mainly talk about A. The limitations of BMI.B. The standards of weight measurement.C. The classification of health conditions.D. The health assessment of overweight people.33. What is the main advantage of BRI A. It clarifies different kinds of fat. B. It evaluates all types of body fat.C. It measures highly risky body fat. D. It identifies harmful chemicals in fat.34. What is Dr. Jay’s suggestion for weight assessment A. Stopping using BMI. B. Focusing on specific weights.C. Considering multiple health signs. D. Adopting rapid weight loss approaches.35. What does the author think of people’s pursuing an ideal weight number A. Reasonable. B. Practical. C. Dangerous. D. Unnecessary.第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。For individuals with hearing loss, listening to conversations in noisy environments can be particularly challenging. Unfortunately, traditional hearing aids adopt a “one-size-fits-all” approach to processing sounds, regardless of the listening needs of individual users. 36 Users may also experience a lack of sound clarity (清楚) and do not want to engage in conversations with others.Good news is that a hearing aid company named Oticon is taking an important step to solve this No. 1 challenge for people with hearing loss — hearing speech in noise. With new 4D Sensor technology, Oticon Intent, a new device, is capable of understanding the users’ listening intentions. 37 In this way, it is able to deliver truly personalised support. But the true hero in sound processing is the brain, as it is constantly working to make sense of sound. Oticon’s new technology provides the brain with access to the full sound environment.38 In conversation, users tend to keep their heads still to engage with a single person. Or they move their heads in a group conversation to engage with different people. When struggling to hear what someone is saying, users are likely to lean (倾斜) in to listen. The technology in Oticon Intent understands and adapts to the user through sensors that monitor head and body movements. It helps users move beyond just hearing and listening. 39 .Thomas Behrens, Vice President of the company, said, “This small device has up to 20 hours of battery life. 40 When the device requires a recharge, users can simply place it into the charger for just 30 minutes to obtain up to 8 hours of battery life.”A.Thus, it is able to prevent memory loss.B.It can recognise what people want and need to listen to.C.Moreover, it helps them communicate and fully engage in life.D.This may make listening and engaging with others more difficult.E.That means users will never have to worry about running out of battery.F.Take a step towards better hearing by contacting your nearest hearing care professional.G.People’s communication behaviour reflects their listening intentions via head and body movements.第三部分 语言运用(共三节,满分35分)第一节(共15小题; 每小题1分,满分 15分)阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。Did you ever have a dream I’m talking about a conscious dream where you would like to see a new future, a different choice of employment and a 41 of your own.Several years ago, I had a dream of 42 a board game (棋类游戏) that would 43 my fortune. Suddenly Emma fell down on a rocky path, ankle pain shooting through her body like lightning. Tears welled up in her eyes as she considered giving up the race. That’s when she remembered why she started this journey—not just to win, but to conquer her fears and prove to herself that she could do win, but her father’s smile also emerged in her mind. With renewed determination, she gathered herself, stood up, and continued running, though at a slower pace.Every step was a battle against her ankle pain, but Emma refused to give in. She could hear the cheers of the crowd growing louder and feel the vibrations of excitement under her feet. With each step, she left behind not just the distance, but also her doubts and fears. Finally, she crossed the finish line with a roar of applause and cheers. Her father was so excited that he took her in his arms to congratulate her. Though she didn’t win first place, finishing the race was a victory in itself, for she had conquered her fears and proved herself.听力原文(Text 1)M: My job is so boring.
