My affair with sugar began innocently enough in my childhood, when I was addicted to sweet treats as rewards for good behavior by overworked but loving parents, or as a means to celebrate special occasions. As I grew older, my desire intensified (增强), leading me to seek the sweet comfort of chocolate, Coke, and Cheese Cheetos. These sugary delights became my escape from the stress and worries in my life.
It wasn’t until my reflection in the mirror no longer matched the lively, intelligent person I felt inside that I realized the seriousness of my situation. Clothes that once fit me perfectly are now uncomfortably tight, and climbing a flight of stairs leaves me breathless. Not to mention that, in the past two to three years, my weight gain has influenced my self-esteem, confidence, and overall well-being.
In my search for a healthier lifestyle, I decided to turn to zero-calorie (卡路里) drinks, believing they would be a healthier choice to my beloved sugary drinks. However, my research led me to an alarming discovery of the dangers of aspartame, a commonly used artificial sweetener found in many zero-calorie drinks. Despite its lack of calories, aspartame has been linked to many health concerns including headaches, dizziness, and even more serious conditions. More studies are needed to learn about artificial sweeteners’ long-term effects on our health. Still, knowing this put me off zero-calorie drinks for a while!
With newfound knowledge and determination, I began my journey, to break free from sugar addiction. The journey was challenging, with persistent desires and constant temptations (诱惑). However, armed with healthier snack choices, such as fruit and nuts, and the support of loved ones, I gradually weaned myself off the sugar roller coaster. I am rediscovering some of the joys of a more balanced lifestyle. Regular exercise became my companion, boosting my energy levels and reducing stress.

A. Stopped consuming sugar. B. Switched to sugar replacements.
C. Monitored my sugar levels. D. Learned the tricks of sugar control.
27. Which of the following can best describe the author
A. Self-aware and reflective. B. Intelligent but careless.
C. Determined but impatient. D. Self-disciplined and talented.

The village super league, or “Cun Chao” in Chinese, is a soccer game among different villages in Rongjiang County, Southwest China’s Guizhou Province, and it is so down-to-earth (接地气的) but popular that it has attracted not only the attention of football legend Michael Owen, but also millions of Chinese netizens, who are paying attention to this non-professional football league.
The players come from a variety of backgrounds. They are vendors, drivers, students, carpenters, tilers, former butchers and brick factory workers. Their ages range from 15 to over 40 years old. At the game site, representatives wearing various traditional national costumes play national musical instruments and enter the arena (竞技场) with the players, and perform songs and dances.
“This kind of football game is natural and with pureness and it is driven by the passion of the ordinary people not the economic benefits. The game is providing not only values of sports, but also a way of socialising with low costs.” an expert noted. “This kind of atmosphere is very rarely seen and is treasured, especially for people in urban areas who are getting increasingly busy and under great work pressure, and when they look at the fun, relaxing and down-to-earth way of life in the countryside, they will naturally be interested.” experts said. There is at least one good impact brought by “Cun Chao” to Chinese soccer—to make more people see the pureness of joy brought by the sport and encourage them to play soccer.
Today, more and more grassroots sports events are held in the mountains and are using sports as a medium to showcase the unique charm of the local area, reflecting a vibrant lifestyle filled with agricultural activities and rural fun.

31. What is the author’s attitude to sports events held in mountains

We have more ways to access music than at any time in history and a whole world of unfamiliar styles to explore. The thrill of discovering new songs and new sounds can enrich people of all ages. Except, most of the time, it doesn’t. Our willingness to explore new, unfamiliar music decreases with age.
Academics have created the term “open-earedness” to describe this phenomenon. Until around the age of 11, children are generally happy to engage (参与) with unfamiliar music. Early adolescence (青春期) sees a reduction in open-earedness, but is accompanied by a strong increase in interest in music more generally. Open-earedness increases slightly during young adulthood, and then falls as we age.
A major study involving more than 250,000 participants confirmed these changing behaviors. It also showed that the significance we give to music after adolescence declines, and the amount of music we listen to reduces from a high point of 20% of our waking time during adolescence, to 13% in adulthood.
Researchers have different theories to account for these trends. One explanation for age-based reduction in music consumption simply assumes that responsibility-burdened adults may have less free time at their disposal (自由支配) to explore their musical interests than younger people.
Some interpret (解释) the observed decline in music engagement in terms of psychosocial maturation (成熟). Adolescents use music as an identity marker and engage with it to navigate social circles. Adults have developed personalities and established social groups. As such, drivers to engage with new music are lessened.
Some researchers argue that we shouldn’t use a person’s age to predict if their musical taste will stay the same, without first thinking about how we enjoy and use music at different stages of our lives. Teenagers tend to be very aware of what they are listening to. Adults who use music as motivation or accompaniment for activities such as exercise or household chores may be less aware of the extent to which they actually do listen to new music.
32. What does the term “open-earedness” refer to in the passage
A. The ability to play music.
B. The willingness to explore new music.
C. The interest in music during adolescence.
D. The significance of music in daily life.
33. According to the study, how does the amount of music listened to change as we age
A. It remains consistent throughout life.
B. It increases from childhood to adulthood.
C. It reaches the highest point during adolescence and then decreases.
D. It gradually declines from childhood to adulthood.
34. What factor is suggested as one cause for a reduced interest in new music as people age
A. An increase in hearing sharpness.
B. Less spare time due to responsibilities.
C. An intense decrease in interest in music.
D. Changes in personality and social groups.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. Music Consumption: A Lifelong Journey.
B. Factors Influencing Music Engagement in Adults.
C. Adolescents and Music: Identity and Exploration.
D. Decline of Open-Earedness: Age Affects Music Exploration.

When you hear the term “exercise snacks,” you may think of a piece of fruit, a hard-boiled egg or a protein bar. 36 It’s a way of getting closer to the recommended 150 minutes of moderate-intensity (适度强度) exercise each week by doing short bursts of intense activity — moving around actively for a minute or two at a time.
“We’re living a more inactive life. We have a lot of office jobs. We’re sitting around a lot more,” says exercise physiologist Katie Lawton, MEd. “ 37 ”
For those of us who struggle to find 30 minutes or more to work out each day, exercise snacks throughout the day can help make your wellness and fitness goals more achievable. 38 While more research is needed to fully understand how exercise snacks can benefit your health, recent studies show that the benefits of exercise snacks may include improved cardiovascular (心血管的) function, increased flexibility, improved muscle strength and reduced blood sugar levels.
39 “ The biggest factor with exercise snacks is sticking to it,” notes Lawton. “ It’s not going to be very impactful if you’re just doing it when you remember to do it. If you can do exercise snacking regularly over a span of a month or two months, I think you’re going to see an impact.” 40 “ Research shows that three times a day, seven days a week can improve your cardiovascular health,” adds Lawton. “ It’s important to reduce long sitting periods, which can be bad for your health.”
A. Any other great reason to try exercise snacks
B. So, how often should you be exercise snacking
C. Exercise snacks will help you reduce stress and build up strength.
D. But doing an exercise snack occasionally won’t make a big difference.
E. Exercise snacks work as a reminder to just get up and move every so often.
F. But the idea of exercise snacks isn’t about what you eat pre- or post-workout.
G. The quick workout can also provide some health benefits similar to traditional workouts.

It took place in a teacher’s family. One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school, when he accidentally threw the ball at a vase (花瓶) sitting on the shelf. The vase dropped to the floor and a large piece broke off. What made Ben more upset was that the vase was not a common decoration but an antique (古董), which was handed down through generations (代代相传) from the 18th century. It was also his mother’s favourite possession. To cover his terrible action, the frightened boy glued (用胶水粘) the pieces together hastily and put the vase back to its place.
As the mother herself dusted the vase every day, she naturally noticed the cracks that evening. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he broke the vase. Fearing punishment, the suddenly inspired boy said that a neighbor’s cat jumped in from the window and he couldn’t drive it away no matter how hard he tried. It raced around the living room and finally knocked the vase off its shelf. His mother was quite clear that her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned.
However, in the face of her son’s nervous eyes and the suspicious (怀疑的) looks of the other family members, Ben’s mother remained calm. She realized she shouldn’t just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea.
Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished but, as he had already lied, he was determined to deny everything to the end, no matter how angry his mum became.
In the study, calmly bathed in the light, his mothers face showed no sign of anger. On seeing her son push open the door and cautiously enter, she took a chocolate box out of a drawer and gave him one.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
The mother said, “ The first chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!” Amazed as he was at her reward instead of harsh scold (严厉责备), Ben reluctantly (不情愿地) received it, not daring to fix his eyes on his mother’s. Then, the mother squeezed another chocolate in his hand as a praise for his skillfully restoring the broken vase. Glancing at the chocolates with hesitation, the boy timidly[ t m dl ] (胆怯地) raised his head before his mother. Obviously, the tension on his face faded a little bit. “Now,” the mother picked out a third chocolate and softly continued, “the last chocolate. I am so sorry, my little sweetheart. I shouldn’t have laid a fragile [ fr d a l] (易碎的) vase at an inappropriate [ n pr pri t] (不恰当的) place, especially when there is a boy so absorbed in sports.”
Now with some chocolates in hand, the boy’s bad attitude disappeared. “But, Mum, I…”, attempting to make something clear, Ben awkwardly uttered nothing but some words. His mother silenced him by gently putting her finger on his lips, gave a soft kiss on his forehead and walked out of the study. Back into his room, Ben placed the three chocolates where he could see them easily. From then on, the three chocolates rang the alarm in his heart every time he intended to lie, reminding him to be honest. Sometimes, no punishment could also make a big difference to a child’s growth. There is no doubt that the wise teacher and mother mixed warm romantic humor into her careful and severe education.
