When Ma Jun was born, his parents noticed something unusual. His limbs were weak, and he couldn’t move or stand without help. While his peers ran and played, Ma could only sit in a wheelchair, watching in frustration. For years, his parents carried Ma on their backs to school, braving wind and rain.
In 2016, Ma passed his college entrance exams, but he faced a dilemma. With limited resources, his family couldn’t manage both sons’ education. Then Ma made a decision to stay home, sacrificing (牺牲) his own learning opportunity for his brother. This decision, though rooted in love, threw Ma into hopelessness. Longing to attend university and prove himself despite his condition, Ma instead found himself stuck in bed, feeling desperate.
The turning point came when a friend gave him a book. Shi Tiesheng’s best-seller I and the Temple of Earth. Shi, a famous writer who also uses a wheelchair, had transformed his struggles into profound literature. As he read, Ma felt a spark of hope lighting up his world. Shi’s vivid observations and unshaken hope inspired Ma deeply. He was struck by the realization that someone with similar struggles could find meaning and joy in life. Later, he started on a three-year journey of writing the book The Green and White Stone Steps by recording his own life, pouring his heart and soul into the words.
In June 2023, Ma received unexpected good news that his book was one of 10 selected for publication through the project “Stars of Literature by Chinese Ethnic Writers”. This achievement marked a significant milestone in his literary journey. Then, the Junma Awards for Ethnic Literature announced this year’s awards, and Ma became the youngest winner of this year’s Junma Awards for Ethnic Literature in the prose category.
Having fought against the illness for many years, Ma never defines himself as a man to be pitied. “I don’t think my experiences are tragic. Everyone in this world suffers from something. For me, it’s physical; for some others, it’s emotional. We’re all fighting our own battles,” he says. Writing is not just a profession for Ma — it’s a lifeline, a way to connect with the world and leave behind a legacy of courage, sincerity and hope.
24. Why did Ma give up attending university

Scientists have shown how plants can protect themselves against genetic (基因的) damage caused by environmental stresses. The growing tips of plant roots and shoots have an in-built mechanism (机制) that leads to-cell death if DNA damage is detected, avoiding passing on faulty DNA.
Plants have small populations of stem cells (干细胞) at the tips of their roots and shoots, which enable them to continuously grow and produce new tissues throughout their lifetime. These stem cells serve as ancestors for plant tissues and organs. However, any genetic faults present in the stem cells will continue to exist and be passed on permanently throughout the plant’s life, which could last thousands of years.
Given the critical role of stem cells and their exposure to potentially dangerous environments the growing tips of roots and shoots, safeguards are necessary to prevent stem cell faults for becoming fixed. Researchers Nick Fulcher and Robert Sablowski, funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, aimed to uncover these protective mechanisms. Through experiments involving X-rays and chemicals, they discovered that stem cells were more sensitive to DNA damage compared to other cells.
When DNA damage occurs, the cells have the capacity to detect it and cause programmed cells to die, preventing the propagation of the damaged genetic code to the rest of the plant tissues. This process has similarities to the safeguard mechanism found in animal cells, which has been broadly studied due to its relevance in preventing cancer.
The identification of a similar protective system in plants is of great interest in the field of plant development. It also helps scientists develop plants that can better handle environmental stress. So knowledge of how plants deal with these stresses is of fundamental significance to agricultural science’s response to climate change.
28. What is the function of the in-built mechanism in plants
A. To produce more roots and shoots.
B. To increase the overall lifetime of the plant.
C. To enhance plant growth and nutrient intake
D. To stop genetic faults in stem cells passing on.

In 2013, the World Health Organization (WHO) set an ambitious goal: reduce the global physical inactivity rate by 10 percent by 2025. However, despite numerous public health campaigns and efforts tied to the Olympic Games, people are moving less than ever. The latest data indicates that 31 percent of adults worldwide aren’t meeting physical activity guidelines at 5-percentage-point increase from 26 percent in 2010. Among teens, the numbers are worse: 81 percent aren’t moving enough.
So, what went wrong From public health policy to urban design issues, there are numerous ways to criticize current strategies. However, some experts are asking a more fundamental question — have we been promoting physical activity all wrong For years, public health campaigns have relied heavily on the “exercise is medicine” narrative to promote physical activity. We have all heard it time and again: get active if you want to prevent illnesses like diabetes and heart diseases. It is a message based on strong scientific evidence, and you would think that the promise of good health is the best possible motivator.
Benjamin Rigby, a UK public health researcher, argues that reducing movement merely as a way to prevent disease oversimplifies why people choose to be active. “We want to play, to laugh, to explore, to dance, and feel proud and ultimately, to have fun and feel good,” he says.
A growing number of studies support this idea of shifting the spotlight away from health-focused narratives. A UK analysis of 123 studies concluded that health reasons aren’t necessarily what motivate people to get off the couch. The most effective messages highlight the short-term rewards of being active — like feeling good, reducing stress or having fun with friends — not the threat of illness.
Solid evidence also shows that people are more likely to stay active when it’s fun. Enjoyment is linked to young people consistently participating in sports. And remember Pokémon GO That craze has its most engaged users walking an extra 1473 steps a day on average, just because they were excited to “catch ‘em all”.
Given the evidence, why haven’t public health messages tailored more closely with motivations centred on enjoyment While health narratives appeal to institutions, with the next target of reducing inactivity by 15% by 2030, change is urgently needed.
32. What happened to the global physical inactivity rate between 2010 and 2025
A. Teen inactivity decreased significantly.
B. Adult inactivity rose from 26% to 31%.
C. The 10% reduction goal v as achieved.

A. They attach little importance to the Olympic Games.
B. They focus too much on the urban design issues.
C. They ignore the scientific evidence behind exercise.
D. They rely too much on health benefits as motivation.
34. Why does the author mention “Pokémon GO” in paragraph 5
A. To contrast youth and adult exercise preferences.
B. To illustrate how enjoyment increases activity.
C. To demonstrate the success of commercial health apps.
D. To criticize technology’s role in reducing physical activity.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Finding emotion in motion
B. Exercise is the best medicine
C. Connecting others through games .
D. A little movement for better health

Tom Perry concentrated hard. The rocket competition would begin shortly. He had never lost a contest, but that didn’t calm him. Being on top counted, and he pushed himself to remain there.
The other kids, however, rarely came over to him. No way was he going to let them ignore that he’d win again. Still, he often wondered: why didn’t winning make people like him better
He opened his toolbox and began assembling(组装) his launch pad. Then he checked his rocket again. It looked perfect — especially compared to the others.
But one caught his eye. A thin boy-named Ed lifted it carefully. Its paint shone in the sunlight, and its parts fit perfectly. His critical eye detected that this rocket could beat his.
“Nice rocket,” said the boy nervously “Thanks,” Tom replied flatly, and then regretted it. “Where do you usually launch it I’ve never seen you here.” “In the field behind my house.”
“You don’t care for these contests ”
“I never really thought about them. I keep pretty much to myself.”
The announcer explained the competition Tom barely listened, his gaze constantly drifting to Ed’s rocket. Suddenly his heart did a leap — as Ed lifted the rocket to place it on the launch pad, his fin (翼) had caught against something, pulling it away from the fuselage (机身) — not enough to break it off, just enough to loosen it.
But Ed hadn’t noticed. He glanced back at Tom and gave a thumbs-up. Tom felt a surge of guilt but decided he wasn’t going to say anything. Anyway, it was up to Ed to keep checking his rocket.
Then the competition began. Most rockets gained respectable heights, while a few shot wildly. Tom watched, but the knowledge he had about what was wrong with their rockets soured within him. It was like something he had stolen.
“Ed Malovich will be our next contestant,” the announcer said, interrupting Tom’s daydream. Immediately Ed lifted his rocket and headed to the launch area.
