To Karanth, everyone in every part of the world is born with a fundamental connection to nature. Growing up in Karnataka, she began accompanying her father into the wild at just two years old. But in her hometown, kids grew up with a negative perspective on wildlife. Elephants destroyed crops and sometimes people were badly injured or killed. Karanth discovered kids wouldn’t appreciate the fact that it’s the best place to witness extraordinary animals.
In 2017, a conversation with her friend Gabby shifted her mindset towards education. Within half a year, Karanth and Gabby had the first version of “Wild Shaale” on their hands. A program designed for students who come into frequent contact with wildlife, Wild Shaale aims to develop a genuine understanding of wildlife and wild spaces and move beyond wildlife tolerance to concepts of conservation and environmental issues. The conservation education program fills a gap in environmental learning.
While it is fortunate that a basic environmental education is supported by local government, Karanth believes the challenge lies in the quality of the curriculum and whether it’s delivered effectively and consistently. “You have to visualize what these schools look like. They may not have electricity — forget having computers, internet, iPads, or anything.”
Encouraging the students to find commonalities between themselves and the animals is the first step to changing perceptions and hopefully, behaviors. “It comes down to the same things: we need food; we need water; we need space. Then they start to understand why situations of conflict arise,” Karanth says. “But then how do you convince them not to get angry, not to act in a way that leads to harm That’s something we’re trying to work on. It’s not easy.”
4. What problem might Karanth’s hometown have faced
A. Human-wildlife conflict. B. Loss of wildlife habitats.
C. Overpopulation of elephants. D. Disregard for wildlife balance.
5. Why did Karanth launch the program Wild Shaale
A. To help students identify animals. B. To fill a gap in local education.
C. To change how students perceive wildlife. D. To publicize wildlife diversity.
6. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. The support to the plan. B. The barrier to the program.
C. The curriculum arrangement. D. The schools’conditions.
7. What is Karanth trying to achieve in the program
A. A shift in humans’ attitudes and behavior. B. A breakthrough in environmental studies.
C. Appropriate ways to end local conflicts. D. Approaches to changing animals’ behavior.

Soon, every seat on an airplane could be a window seat! New concept designs are revealing how travelers will be able to gaze at the stars above in future airplanes. Aerospace giant Airbus is showing off its vision of next-gen cabins, which include an all-round view of clouds as you jet through them.
The Airspace Cabin Vision 2035+ concept also lets passengers tap on smart interactive windows that show travel time and let you explore your destination city. The French company also says passengers will enjoy a greater choice of meals thanks to new pre-ordering concepts. They believe that, by collecting your meal at the gate, food and packaging waste could be reduced by up to 15 percent. The company explains their ethos is “to reduce emissions at heart”.
“Right now, research shows the cabin can contribute between 10% and 20% to the aircraft’s overall environmental impact during its lifecycle,” Airbus officials write.
“Putting a focus on reducing this, Airbus brought together ten airlines and eight technology companies to feed into a vision that rethinks the way the cabin should look and feel, maintaining superior passenger comfort.”
Airbus found that one of the biggest levers (手段) in the cabin for reducing emissions is lightweight solutions. To achieve this, efforts should be focused on creating lighter “bionic designs” that will help reduce cabin weight by up to 40 percent.
“As the world shifts to a more circular (循环的) economy, we are rethinking the materials used inside the cabin so they’re able to be recycled, reused and repaired during their lifecycle. This is also a key part of the 2035+ vision,” Airbus officials explain.
“Cabin lining and components will be developed for current aircraft using new materials and a complete introduction of these will be rolled out with the next generation aircraft”
8. What can we know about the next-gen cabins from the first two paragraphs
A. They will be made of glasses.
B. They will shorten travel time greatly.
C. They will reduce food waste to some extent.
D. They will provide whatever food passengers want.
9. What does the underlined word “ethos” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Advice. B. Fer. C. Loss. D. Idea.
10. What can be inferred about the future materials used inside the cabin
A. They are cheaper. B. They are more eco-friendly.
C. They are more convenient. D. They are more available.
11. What is the purpose of the passage
A. To advertise some new flights. B. To call on people to live a greener life.
C. To introduce new design ideas of a plane. D. To explain how to make planes smarter.
D
Picture this: Your computer could sense your emotions as you worked — feeling your joy at completing a task, your boredom during repetitive data entry, or your frustration when an error message keeps emerging. This might sound like science fiction, but researchers are bringing this vision closer to reality by developing advanced computational models that can predict human emotions during computer interactions.
At the forefront of this effort is a team of Finnish scientists who have created a model. The model essentially puts itself in the user’s shoes, simulating (模拟) the series of actions, outcomes, and cognitive appraisals (认知评估) that ultimately give rise to emotions like happiness, boredom, or frustration.
To test their model, the researchers designed a series of interactive computer tasks meant to cause specific emotions. In the “happiness” task, users answered a series of questions and received positive feedback for correct responses. The “boredom” task involved a series of repetitive questions. In the “frustration” task, the system was intentionally programmed to display error messages and ultimately fail, regardless of the user’s answers.
As study participants worked through these tasks, the emotional reactions predicted by the model closely matched the emotions reported by the users themselves. The model was even able to discover small changes, such as a steady increase in frustration over the course of the error-ridden task.
The researchers believe their emotion-predicting model could pave the way for a new generation of emotionally intelligent computers that can tailor their behavior to the user’s psychological state. An effective system might offer a stressed user comforting words of encouragement, liven up a boring task with humor, or provide emotional assistance when frustration mounts. “By creating interactions that are more emotionally attuned, designers could boost user engagement, productivity, and overall well-being,” they add.
However, the model is still in progress and needs to be extended to recognize a wider range of emotions across more complex, real-world computer interactions. The researchers also emphasize the importance of gathering more diverse training data to ensure the model can accurately predict emotions for users of all backgrounds.
12 How does the author introduce the topic of the text
A. By making a comparison. B. By creating an imaginary scene.
C. By telling a real life story. D. By sharing a popular book.
13. What were computer users asked to do in the study
A. Comfort each other. B. Report their feelings.
C. Get rid of boredom. D. Stay disconnected online.
14. What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A. Great improvements on the model. B. Characteristics of future computer users.
C. Researchers’ expectation of their model. D. Computer users’ responses to the model.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Smart Computers May Replace Humans
B. Interactions with Computers Are Enjoyable
C. Computers Might Understand Our Emotions
D. An Emotion-predicting Model Meets Challenges

In a coastal neighborhood where the salty breeze whispered through the trees, lived a man named Jackson, famous for his helpful nature. The community he was part of was no stranger to the destruction of typhoons, which would occasionally sweep in from the sea, unleashing their anger upon the land.
One year, a particularly fierce typhoon struck, its strong winds tearing through the town like a wild beast. Among the many damages it left behind, a large tree in Jackson’s community was uprooted, whose massive trunk became a barrier that blocked the main path, making it difficult for the residents to move about.
The tree was big, its thick branches sprawling across the ground like the body of a giant. It was far too heavy to be moved by hand. And with the aftermath of the typhoon still being dealt with, the vehicles that were usually sent to handle such situations were delayed.
As the residents gathered around the fallen tree, a buzz of conversation filled the air. People all spoke up and expressed their views, but no one seemed willing to take the initiative. It was as if they were all waiting for someone else to step up and lead the way.
Seeing the situation, Jackson decided to take matters into his own hands. He called out to his neighbors, urging them to bring the tools they had — saws (锯), axes and anything that could help in cutting and moving the tree. However, his appeal was met with hesitation, and for a while, nothing changed.
Determined to make a difference, Jackson decided to set an example. He went back to his house and returned with a sturdy saw. With a resolute expression, he approached the fallen tree and began to saw through its thick trunk. His neighbors, who had been mere spectators, began to take notice. Jackson’s figure resonated within them as he worked tirelessly, braving the heat and the difficulty of the task.
注意:

Jackson’s action made an impact on the community.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Inspired by Jackson’s lead, they joined in the effort. The once quiet street was now filled with the sounds of sawing and chopping, a symphony of community spirit in action. Children helped by carrying away the smaller branches, while the adults tackled the larger ones. Together, they transformed the scene from one of disorder to one of purposeful cooperation. The tree, which had stood as a symbol of nature’s power, now became a proof of the community’s unity. As the final pieces were moved aside, a cheer rose from the group, a celebration of their collective victory.
Jackson’s action made an impact on the community. Later, when people in the community were in trouble, there was always someone who would lend a helping hand. People would meet and greet each other with a smile. The whole neighborhood showed a harmonious scene. The fallen tree, once a source of inconvenience, stood as a reminder of what could be achieved when neighbors worked together. And as the community returned to their daily routines, they did so with a renewed appreciation for the kindness of a man named Jackson.
