The History of Paper
Paper is one of the most important inventions in human history. Before paper was
invented, people wrote on different materials. In ancient Egypt, people used papyrus
(纸莎草纸) to write on. In ancient China, people wrote on bamboo slips and silk.
However, papyrus was expensive and not easy to make, and bamboo slips were heavy
to carry. Silk was also very expensive, so only rich people could use it.
The invention of paper changed everything. It’s believed that paper was invented by
Cai Lun, a eunuch (宦官) in the Eastern Han Dynasty (东汉) of China. Around 105
AD, Cai Lun improved the way of making paper. He used materials like bark (树皮),
hemp (麻), rags (破布) and old fishing nets. These materials were easy to find and
cheap, so the cost of making paper was greatly reduced.
After the invention of paper, it quickly spread to other parts of China. Later, it was
introduced to other countries. In the 8th century, paper-making technology was
brought to the Arab world. Then, it spread to Europe in the 12th century. Before paper
was introduced to Europe, people there wrote on parchment (羊皮纸), which was
made from animal skin. Parchment was very expensive, so only a small number of
people could read and write. With the spread of paper, more people had the chance to
learn to read and write, which helped the development of culture and science.
Today, paper is still widely used in our daily life. We use it to write, print books,
make newspapers and so on. Although we now have digital devices like computers
and mobile phones, paper is still an important part of our life.

A.A person from ancient Egypt. B.A European. C.Cai Lun. D.A rich man.

B.Because he used expensive materials.
C.Because he made paper by hand.
D.Because he only made a small number of paper.
9.When was paper-making technology brought to Europe
A.In the Eastern Han Dynasty. B.Around 105 AD.

Many young boys dream of flying into the sky. Li Zhenghan was one of them. Sadly, he didn’
t pass the medical examination for pilot training in high school. But now, thanks to the toy bear in
his hand, his childhood dream has partly come true.
Li is an engineering student now. The idea of sending a small toy into the sky came to him
when he studied in high school. After seeing some similar experiments online, his dream came to
life. Yes, Li could not fly himself, but he could make his toys fly.
Three years later, Li had just started college after graduating from high school. He didn’t
know how to send anything into the sky. Over the years, he kept learning and gained (收获) a lot
of useful knowledge. Finally, Li felt the time was right. He shared his dream with some
schoolmates. They all thought it was cool and joined him. They decided to send a toy bear in a lab
coat into the sky.
As soon as they made the decision, Li and his team began working around the clock. It took
them sixty days to prepare for the experiment (实验). The big day arrived in October. The team
studied the terrain (地形), the weather and many other things. Finally, they decided to fly the bear
in Northeastern China (Li’s hometown). After careful checks, they tied the toy to a helium balloon
(氦气球). Slowly, the toy bear carried Li’s childhood dream into the sky! It finally reached a
height of about 28,000 metres.
Li later posted a short video of the bear’s flight online. It got a lot of attention. His story may
