When referring to acts of freedom in South Africa, people may never forget a name: Nelson Mandela. His autobiographical(自传体的) novel, Long Walk to Freedom not only talks about his personal struggles but also shows how South Africa went from being divided to coming together.
Mandela’s early life, as a young advisor to a local African official, gave him the chance to go to school. He chose a legal education, being the only black student at his university. At the same time, he joined the African National Congress (ANC) to end Apartheid (种族隔离) which meant that black people had to carry passes and couldn’t live or travel where they preferred.
In 1960, the Apartheid government made the ANC illegal, and Mandela had to live in hiding in his own country. After being caught in 1962, Mandela kept fighting even while he was in prison for 27 years.
As the world started paying attention to this situation, people from other countries put stress on South Africa for Mandela to be freed from prison. In 1990, Mandela was set free and in 1994, the first fair election happened, making Mandela South Africa’ s first black president.
These lessons could inspire (启发) people everywhere, including China. As China becomes more important globally, Mandela’s journey teaches us important things about dealing with other countries, working together internationally and keeping social harmony.
For me, Long Walk to Freedom is not just a book; it is a call to action and proof of the human ability to go through the darkest times and come out stronger. It serves as a compass(指南针) for all who hope to create a more open and equal world. In Mandela’ s words, “For to be free is not just to cast off one’ s chains(锁链), but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”
4. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. Mandela’s early life experiences.
B. Mandela’s educational background.
C. African National Congress’s function.
D. Black people’s suffering from Apartheid.
5. Which of the following can best describe Mandela
A. Brave and serious. B. Powerful and energetic.
C. Talented and hardworking. D. Strong-willed and peace-loving.
6. Why could Mandela be freed from prison
A. Because African National Congress saved him.
B. Because South Africa was forced to set him free.
C. Because he was helped by a local African official.
D. Because he was elected as South Africa’s president.
7. What can we learn from Long Walk to Freedom
A. It inspires the author to get over difficulties.
B. It calls on people to contribute to their countries.
C. It focuses on Mandela’s ways to win others’ respect.
D. It gives a detailed account on how to create an equal world.
C
Have you ever heard of the online topic “20 minutes for parks” It’s all about the idea that spending just 20 minutes in a park daily can help lower stress, no matter how you spend that time. This year, a trend (趋势) is rising in China — young people are choosing to hang out in parks more often.
Huang Bingbing, a Shenzhen resident, is one of them. Three years ago, she started going to the small park downstairs from her office for lunch breaks on weekdays. “On that piece of grass, I could connect with living plants and animals. It allowed me to clear my mind and recover from the stress of work,” Huang explained. She believes parks can feel like your own secret hide away. Being introverted (内向的), she finds parks to be ideal relaxing places for people like her.
Yet, parks are also shared spaces. They’ re different from shopping malls and cinemas for a particular reason, according to young stage designer Liu Xi, who sees parks as places that contradict consumerism (消费主义). In parks, people can walk, boat, read under the trees, or simply be lost in thought on a bench.
Cheng Yuyan, the 25-year-old founder of the Douban interest group “We Love Strolling in the Park”, saw something interesting during her visits to parks in Japan. She noticed that locals donated park benches with their names on them. Additionally, many parks offered guidebooks detailing the history, geography and blooming schedules of the plants.
Inspired by these practices, Cheng believes people can feel more connected to parks by building a sense of ownership. She plans to encourage members of her Douban group to do similar things. “I hope our group takes more social responsibility. Each of us can become a guardian and contributor to the parks and our city,” she said.
8. What do we know about “20 minutes for parks”
A. It can make people less stressed.
B. It is more suitable for active people.
C. It is increasingly popular among the old.
D. It encourages people to exercise more in parks.
9. What does the underlined word “contradict” in paragraph 3 mean
A. push for. B. focus on. C. go against. D. agree with.
10. What does Cheng inspire her Douban group members to do
A. Follow local practices. B. Visit local parks more often.
C. Make contributions to parks. D. Donate benches without names.
11. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Finding peace of mind in parks.
B. Keeping more connected to parks.
C. Making parks more attractive to visit.
D. Enjoying the popularity of local parks.
D
Several months ago, I worked as a volunteer in an amateur (业余的) tennis tournament (锦标赛) called Tennis 123. One afternoon, I watched a match between a 5-year-old girl and a9-year-old boy. Wang Jun, the founder of Tennis 123, told me that the 5-year-old was the youngest player in the tournament.
Tennis 123 has no age requirement and players compete according to their level from 2.0 to 5.0. But surprisingly, the younger players often beat the older ones.
In the end, the 5-year-old lost the match 0-4. She threw her racket (球拍) meters away and cried terribly for a long time. During the match, she often looked to her mother for help. I checked the girl’s previous results: she had lost 24 matches straight. That afternoon only brought two more losses, including the one with the boy I saw.
When a player’s win ratio (比率) drops below a certain number, they will be placed at a lower level. In the girl’s case, she was already at 2.0, the lowest level, so she had nowhere else to be placed. I discussed with Wang the possibility of improving the tournament rules to better protect these very young kids.
Wang told me that the tournament has matches for beginners, young children, and those who have never won a game before. However, the girl’s parents, both retired athletes themselves, believed that she should stay at the 2.0 level as the girl’s physical condition was quite good.
Still, I disagreed. I worried that continuing to play like this would hurt the girl’s confidence in the court and in her future life. I remember when I played at the 3.0 level two years ago and lost so many times that I went back to 2.5 — it was very frustrating (令人沮丧的). So I don’t think it’s a good idea to put so much pressure on children at such a young age.
Losing can be lonely, whether in tennis or in life. But losing is part of the path toward winning one day. By giving them better support, we can make sure young people grow up with confidence.
12. Why does the author mention the 5-year-old losing the match
A. To explain the young players should be placed at a higher level.
B. To show the tournament rules should be improved for better support.
C. To show the players often lose the game because of their less experience.
D. To prove the surprising fact that the older players often beat the young ones.
13. What is the author’s attitude toward the girl’s losing in the tournament
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Concerned. D. Unclear.
14. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Losing will damage one’s confidence in winning.
B. Losing will bring about one’s low confidence in life.
C. Winning is always walking with losing side by side.
D. Winning can often go through the process of losing.
15. What’s the passage mainly about
A. Tennis match’s popularity among children.
B. Tennis match’s influence on children’s mental health.
C. Tennis match’s role in developing children’s physical health.
D. Tennis match’s future for developing children’s sports spirits.
