I am not very good at languages. But next month, I’m going to Congo in Africa, and I want
to learn Lingala, one of the local languages, for basic conversations. I wasn’t sure how I could do
this until I found Memo, an app to learn foreign languages. Now I’m using some short breaks to
learn Lingala on Memo. It feels just like a game.
“People often stop learning things because they feel they’re not getting any growth or
because it all feels like too much hard work,” says Ed Cooke, one of the people who created
Memo. “We’re trying to create a kind of learning experience that is fun and something you’d
want to do.”
Memo is fun. It gives you a few new words to learn, and these are “seeds” (种子) that you
plant in your “greenhouse”. When you work on the words, you “water your plants”, and they
grow. When the app believes that you have really remembered a word, it moves the word to your
“garden”. You get points as your garden grows, so you can compare yourself with other Memo
users. You go to the next level when you get a high score. If you forget to log in (登录), the app
informs you to “water your plants”.
The app uses two rules about learning. The first is that people remember things better when
they connect them to a picture in their mind. Memo translates words into your own language, but
it also encourages you to use “mems”—pictures that help you remember new words. You can use
mems that other users have created, or you can create your own. The second rule is to have a
break between studying activities. You should stop after studying words and then come back to
them later. Memo helps you with this because you only use it for five or ten minutes a day.
I’ve learned hundreds of Lingala words with Memo. I know this won’t make me a perfect
speaker, but I hope I can do more than just smile and nod when I meet people in Congo. Now, I
need to go and water my vocabulary!
24.Ed Cooke created Memo to help useres to _________.
A.spend more time learning B.increase vocabulary faster
C.do more vocabulary practice D.find learning more enjoyable
25.What does “water your plants” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean
A.Find new words to learn. B.Get a high score in a test.
C.Practise the words you’re learning.D.Compare your score with other users’.
26.What can we learn from the passage
A.The writer can have conversations in Lingala freely.
B.Users can only use the “mems” created.
C.Studying without breaks can help remember new words better.
D.Making connections between words and pictures improves learning.

An encyclopedia is a book or a set of books that gives information about many different
subjects, arranged in alphabetical order. The word comes from the Greek words meaning
“general education”. Before the Internet, encyclopedias were one of the most important tools for
students to find information for their homework and projects.
There are two main types of encyclopedias: general and subject-specific. A general
encyclopedia, like the famous Encyclopedia Britannica, covers a wide range of topics, from
history and science to art and music. A subject encyclopedia, however, focuses on one specific
area, such as an encyclopedia of animals or an encyclopedia of world history.
In the past, encyclopedias were heavy and expensive. Many families were proud to have a
set on their bookshelves. However, with the development of technology, digital encyclopedias
became popular. CD-ROM encyclopedias, like Microsoft Encarta, were a big hit in the 1990s.
They included not only text and pictures but also videos and audio, which made learning more
interesting.
Today, the most famous encyclopedia is probably Wikipedia. It is an online encyclopedia
that anyone can edit. This means it has a huge amount of information that is updated very quickly.
But there is also a problem: because anyone can change the information, sometimes it might not
be 100% accurate. Therefore, while Wikipedia is a great place to start your research, it’s always a
good habit to check the information with other reliable sources.
Encyclopedias, whether in print or online, are wonderful windows to the world. They help
us explore new topics and satisfy our curiosity.
27.What is the main purpose of the first paragraph
A.To introduce the history of encyclopedias.
B.To explain what an encyclopedia is.
C.To talk about Greek words.
D.To compare different encyclopedias.
28.According to the passage, what was an advantage of CD-ROM encyclopedias like Microsoft
Encarta
A.They were very heavy. B.They were expensive.
C.They included videos and audio. D.Anyone could edit them.
29.What is the biggest problem with Wikipedia mentioned in the passage
A.It has too much information.
B.Its information might not always be accurate.
C.It is not arranged in alphabetical order.
D.It is not available online.
30.What does the author suggest students do after finding information on Wikipedia
A.Print the information immediately.
B.Edit the information to make it correct.
C.Check the information with other sources.
D.Stop using other encyclopedias.

Have you ever dreamed of your high school life Most students may hold the idea that high
school life is busy and boring, but I’d like to say that it isn’t what you think of it.
In my opinion, study always comes first in my high school life. When I received the letter
of admission (录取通知书) in summer, I clearly knew what I should do. So, I decided to study
hard and keep learning as before. I strongly believed that knowledge could change my life. By
working hard, I got good grades in exams.
My school also provided me with many good chances that helped me to improve myself.
For example, I used to be afraid of standing in front of crowds to express myself. But after taking
part in many competitions held by my school, I’m not afraid any more. Donating activities made
me know how to communicate with others. I also developed social skills and trained my abilities.
I often visited the library. It is said that “Shelves of books, oceans of knowledge”. Keeping
reading the books I was interested in gave me the chance to share stories with my new friends and
it also broadened (拓宽) my horizons (眼界). Whenever I felt sad, lost or was in trouble, staying
in the library could help me calm down.
In short, my high school life was busy but meaningful, and I also became a better person
during this period.
Though life is busy, chances will come only if you have a prepared mind. Am I right
35.How does the writer feel after taking part in many competitions

Dazi is a quick and convenient way to make friends. It provides a way for people to build 42
(far) social connections and make their lives more meaningful.
However, finding a dazi often comes with some danger. This includes meeting strangers by
43 (you) and it can put you at risk of harm. So be careful when you meet an online dazi.
44 (stay) safe, remember to meet your online dazi in public places like shopping malls and
let someone know where you go. If you are in 45 (dangerous), you will be saved
immediately.
A short-term friendship formed through dazi can probably turn into a long-term relationship.
It’s important to respect each other’s personal space when building a relationship, so that the

Should friends be different or the same
Last week Yuying Middle School asked this question among 500 students. Here are the
results.
35% of the students thought friends should be the same, while 30% said friends should be
different and the rest 35% didn’t care if friends are the same or different. For me, I also don’t
mind the differences between friends. But I think that a true friend should reach for your hand
and touch your heart.
My best friend Lily is as tall as I am, but I am heavier than her. We both like to talk to
others, but Lily is more outgoing and friendlier than me. We both like sports, but I only like
