Shark's Fin and Sichuan Pepper About the writer Fuchsia Dunlop is English. She came to China in 1994 and spent 15 years in China. She loves Chinese food and learns much about Chinese food culture. About the book Fuchsia Dunlop tells us many kinds of food she met in different places like Jiangsu, Gansu and Sichuan. She talks a lot about Sichuan pepper. Do you know Fujian nanyin People from ancient Central China brought their music to Quanzhou, Fujian Province during the Han Dynasty (202 BC~220 AD). It later slowly combined(结合)with the local music.
Usually there are five musicians in a nanyin show. In the middle is the singer who plays the clapper (快板).On the singer's left are two musicians playing the dongxiao and the erxian, while on the right are the other two playing the pipa and the sanxian. All of them are traditional Chinese musical instruments. “The dongxiao is the main instrument to make slow and soft nanyin,” said Chen Jianxin, who was born into a family of nanyin musicians in Quanzhou.
The singer sings in local language in the southern Fujian songs, and each song tells a story. Many stories are from traditional operas like The Story of the Pipa, a Kunqu Opera. It tells the love story between Cai Bojie and his wife Zhao Wuniang.
In 2009,nanyin was listed as the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity(人类非遗)．Students in many primary schools in Quanzhou also learn nanyi. In Chen's opinion, it's easier to pass down this heritage if students are good at these instruments. “If we can pass down nanyin well, half of Fujian culture can be preserved(保存)well. We really hope that more kids and teenagers can join us. This way, Fujian nanyin will not be strange to people in hundreds of years," Chen said.
