Wan Zuocheng, 70, starts his day at 4 a. m. He boils a large amount of water every day to help the families of cancer patients with their cooking. He also prepares many pots of porridge (粥). His wife, 68-year-old Xion g Gengxiang, handles rice cooking. She cooks more than 10 pots of rice a day. They also have a special kitchen, which is a shared kitchen. Wan and Xiong buy more kitchen tools, so more people can cook in the kitchen at the same time.
The special kitchen is located right next to Jiangxi Cancer Hospital. Over the past 20 years, it has become widely known as the “anti-cancer kitchen” for providing patients and their families with a convenient place to cook meals. The couple provides the use of their kitchen to the public at a very low price — only 1 yuan once.
The kitchen was originally a breakfast stall (小摊). They used to cook youtiao, which was well-known in the neighborhood. One day in 2003, a young couple walked by and asked if they could cook food for their son in the kitchen. Their boy was suffering from bone cancer. He wanted to eat his mother’s cooking. Wan and Xion g let the young mother use their kitchen for free. Later, they had an idea that they could offer the kitchen to other families who wanted to make meals for their hospitalized relatives.
In February 2021, Wan and Xiong received the Touching China Award 2020, which is an annual award that recognizes the country’s most inspiring role models in different aspects. Later that year, in November, they were also named “National Moral Models”. When asked why doing this, Wan said, “I want to help. I am willing to do it, and I’ll keep doing it as long as I can.”
24. Why are there more kitchen tools in the special kitchen
A. To decorate the kitchen. B. To boil water while cooking meals.
C. To cook a large amount of porridge. D. To enable more people to use them at once.
25. What can we learn about the “anti-cancer kitchen” from the second paragraph
A. It sells breakfast at a low price. B. It belongs to Jiangxi Cancer Hospital.
C. It provides free service for cancer patients. D. It offers a place for those who need to cook.
26. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning a young couple
A. To show how helpless they were. B. To compare with Wan and Xiong.
C. To admire the young mother’s love. D. To tell the inspiration for the kitchen.

They come suddenly, without warning, and the question in your mind “Why now?” melts into the depressing realization that this could mean the end of your life.Until now.
A new machine-learning system of artificial intelligence (AI) can successfully predict the risk of cardiac arrest (心脏骤停) using timing and weather data, according to a new study published in the journal Heart.
The study found that the out-of-hospital risk of cardiac arrest was highest on Sundays, Mondays, during sharp drops in temperature during or between days, and on public holidays. The new findings could serve as an early warning system, lowering the risk of deadly episodes and raising survival chances, in addition to improving emergency medical services' ability to prepare for serious situations. This is significant because out-of-hospital cardiac arrests are common globally, and are generally linked to low survival rates.
To deepen the research, the scientists evaluated the capacity of machine learning to anticipate daily out-of-hospital cardiac arrests via timing, as in the year, season, day of the week, hour of day, and daily weather, like snowfall, temperature, wind speed, and atmospheric pressure readings.Between 2005 and 2013, 1,299,784 cases happened, and machine learning was implemented for 525,374 cases using timing data, weather, or both for a training dataset. These results were then contrasted with 135,678 cases that happened between 2014 and 2015, to examine the model's capacity for accuracy for anticipating the statistical number of daily cardiac arrests in other years.
“This predictive model may be useful for preventing out-of-hospital cardiac arrest,” said the researchers. However, it's critically important to note that this study does not promise a way to predict when people will really die from cardiac arrest. As a leading cause of death, the new machine-learning AI merely predicts when the risk of having a heart attack is high.
28.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.The seriousness of cardiac arrests. B.The great significance of the findings.
C.The power of artificial intelligence. D.The symptoms of cardiac arrests.
29.What does the underlined word “implemented” mean in paragraph 4
A.Created. B.Suspended C. Applied. D.Updated.
30.What's the author's attitude to the warning system

31.What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To state the potential risks of heart attacks.
B.To introduce a breakthrough of a disease prediction.
C. To stress the importance of conducting researches.
D.To point out the shortcomings of modern technology.

Is boredom a thing of the past, like black-and-white television And, if so, is that a good thing Julie Robinson, a former teacher who now represents the Independent Association of Prep Schools, thinks that boredom is regarded as an enemy of today’s children, and they are losing the ability to become thoughtful and reflective.
“We should not fear boredom.” said Julie Robinson. “Boredom is valuable to children. Quiet, reflective time is just as important as purposeful activity,” she added.
Her opinion is that constant (连续不断的) activity for a child, often the result of the dreams of parents, will lead to concerned and worrying adult. The traditional ideas that children should be constantly active could prevent the development of their imagination. So anything that improves a greater thoughtfulness is to be warmly welcomed.
Parents now feel a sense of failure when they hear their children complain about being bored. They seek an electronic device to play games at once. And we didn’t feel bored during long car journeys anymore by the impatient “Are we there yet ” because all kinds of electronic devices have been taken along to avoid even a minute of boredom. So what chance do children have to allow their thoughts to wander
But it’s not just children who need lessons in reflection. Adults need that, too. On my train journey to work this morning, I couldn’t see a single person who wasn’t using an electronic device. No one was simply looking out of the window at the beautiful views. Not time for quiet thinking, even in the quiet library. There were emails to send, texts to read, and games to play. The wider world, seemingly, didn’t exist. The mobile phone has changed many things about our lives, and has developed an inability — among adults as well as children — to live in the present. What Julie Robinson regards is a cross-generational phenomenon: the fear of “inactivity”. And she is right.
32. Julie Robinson thinks boredom is useful because it makes children______.
A. find effective solutions to social problems
B. have time to think and have their imagination developed
C. improve the ability to learn knowledge
D. communicate more with their parents and friends
33. Which of the following is seen as “inactivity” according to the last paragraph
A. Sending emails on a train.
B. Playing games with friends.
C. Planning constant activity for children.
D. Looking out of the window at the beautiful views.
34. The author mentioned the train journey to show that ______.
A. electronic devices influence people’s life greatly
B. the view of the countryside was beautiful
C. people had too much work to do
D. the trip on a quiet train was very boring
35. What’s the main idea of the passage
A. The importance of preventing children from being bored.
B. The negative impacts of electronic devices on adults.
C. The problem of people’s fear of boredom.
D. The ways to encourage children’s imagination development.

Three Ways For Children to Learn From The Land This Earth Month
Even if you live in a big city, you can still experience nature firsthand. ____36____ It’s all that we experience with our senses when we go outside. Here are three ways to introduce the concept of climate change to kids while encouraging a connection with the environment.
Keep a climate journal.
____37____ However, you can explain that climate is simply the pattern of weather in a certain place over time. Have them keep a weather journal of the local weather day to day to get a sense of the climate in their area. For the older kids, discuss different weather measurement tools that are used by meteorologists (气象学家), such as barometers and hygrometers.
____38____
Kids can help take care of plants, like vegetables in a garden or flowering plants in pots. Growing and nurturing plants helps children understand that living things have needs and that people have a role to play in helping living things meet those needs. Make connections between climate change and the needs of plants; for example, how hotter temperatures may mean that a plant needs more water.
Build an outdoor play tool kit(工具箱).
Put together an outdoor tool kit with a magnifying glass (放大镜), a pair of binoculars, a shovel, and a clear container with a lid or a bucket. These items can help kids find and collect natural specimens (标本) to examine. If they need ideas for how to bring nature into their outdoor games, try starting with something they are already interested in. ____39____
It doesn’t take much to strengthen a lifelong relationship between children and the natural world, but it helps to start early and be consistent. ___40____ With a little guidance from parents and educators, children who care about the environment will grow into adults who care about the environment.
A. Get in the dirt.

The moment my son Joe knew I was going to have another baby, he tried his best to stay out of our lives. By the time our daughter Molly was due to be born, I had grown accustomed to his embarrassment and animosity (敌意). I had grown accustomed to a lot of things, not the least of which was having an unexpected child at the age of thirty-nine. My husband, to his eternal credit, was delighted. Throughout it all, Joe rarely spoke to me, except to say, “You don’t have to come to my school,” and — after a marathon baby naming conference—“Call her Molly, the name of my friend’s dog.”
When Molly finally arrived, tiny, quiet and perfect, four family arms were there to draw her close. But Joe’s remained tightly crossed over his chest, on the far side of the hospital room I signed to him to come closer but he shook his head slightly. I could see him standing there, arms still folded, staring straight ahead.
Joe stayed away at a friend’s cottage when Molly and I came home from the hospital. He was still gone ten days later when I took our daughter for her first check-up. He arrived home just as I was coming back, tears streaming down my face. “The doctor thinks she might have a hearing problem,” I sobbed. “She’s too quiet she’s not responding like she should. We have to have her tested.”
As my husband comforted me, downplaying my worry, I noticed that Joe had stopped beside the baby, sound asleep in her car seat. He reached out to her, shifting her slightly away from a bump (隆起) in the carpet. “She’s okay,” he said, looking down at her. “There’s nothing wrong with her. She’s just little.”
Three months later as I walked the floor at 4:00 A. M. with a crying and inconsolable (难以安抚的) (and otherwise perfectly healthy) baby in my arms, I dragged myself into Joe’s room and woke him up “Joe, could you take her Just for a few minutes I can’t settle her down, Dad’s on business, and I just really need a break.”
注意:
Saying nothing, Joe took his little sister from me.

Quiet, reflective time is just as important as purposeful activity,(无聊对孩子来说是有价值的。安静、沉思的时间和有目的的活动一样重要)”和第三段中“The traditional ideas that children should be constantly active could prevent the development of their imagination. So anything that improves a greater thoughtfulness is to be warmly welcomed.(传统观念认为孩子应该不断活跃,这会阻碍他们想象力的发展。
根据最后一段中“On my train journey to work this morning, I couldn’t see a single person who wasn’t using an electronic device.

通读全文尤其是根据第一段“Julie Robinson, a former teacher who now represents the Independent Association of Prep Schools, thinks that boredom is regarded as an enemy of today’s children, and they are losing the ability to become thoughtful and reflective.( Julie Robinson曾是一名教师,现在是预科学校独立协会的代表,她认为无聊被视为当今孩子的敌人,他们正在失去思考和反思的能力)”根据第二段““We should not fear boredom.” said Julie Robinson. “Boredom is valuable to children. Quiet, reflective time is just as important as purposeful activity,” she added.(“我们不应该害怕无聊。朱莉·罗宾逊说。“无聊对孩子来说很有价值。安静、反思的时间和有目的的活动一样重要,”她补充道。)”根据最后一段“But it’s not just children who need lessons in reflection. Adults need that, too.( 但不只是孩子需要学习反思。成年人也需要这样)”可知,主要探讨了现代社会中人们对“无聊”的恐惧及其负面影响,强调无聊对儿童和成人反思与想象力发展的重要性。由此可知,短文主要关于人们害怕无聊的问题。故选C。

【37题详解】
根据后文“However, you can explain that climate is simply the pattern of weather in a certain place over time. Have them keep a weather journal of the local weather day to day to get a sense of the climate in their area. For the older kids, discuss different weather measurement tools that are used by meteorologists (气象学家), such as barometers and hygrometers.(然而,你可以解释说,气候只是某一地区一段时间内的天气模式。让他们每天记录当地天气的天气日志,以了解他们所在地区的气候。对于年龄较大的孩子,讨论气象学家使用的不同天气测量工具,如气压计和湿度计)”可知,下句“however”表明填空句与之构成转折关系。刚好D项中的 tough和下句的“simply”构成转折。同时本段后面提到了“older kids”与D项中的“younger kids"呼应。故D选项“气候变化对小孩子来说是一个很难的话题”符合语境,故选D。

【39题详解】
根据上文“If they need ideas for how to bring nature into their outdoor games, try starting with something they are already interested in.(如果他们需要关于如何将自然带入户外游戏的想法,试着从他们已经感兴趣的东西开始)”可知,上句提到把“nature”带进孩子们的户外活动, G选项中用自然界找到的东西来搭建孩子们的迷你游乐园。
根据上文“It doesn’t take much to strengthen a lifelong relationship between children and the natural world, but it helps to start early and be consistent.(加强儿童与自然世界之间的终身关系并不需要太多的努力,但它有助于及早开始并保持一致)”可知,上句提到尽早培养孩子们和自然的关系,并且要连贯。下句“With a little guidance from parents and educators, children who care about the environment will grow into adults who care about the environment.(在父母和教育工作者的一点点引导下,关心环境的孩子将成长为关心环境的成年人)”提到这样的话孩子们就会成长为关心环境的成年人。

Saying nothing, Joe took his little sister from me. He laid her gently on his bed, tightly rewrapping her blanket. Putting her over his shoulder, he patted her back and spoke to her softly. He acted so skillfully. Miraculously, Molly stopped crying immediately and became quiet. I watched in amazement as my son, who had been so distant and cold towards me, became a loving and caring big brother. Tears welling up in my eyes, I breathed a sigh of relief. It didn't take long for Molly to fall asleep.
Seeing Molly sleeping peacefully in Joe’s bed, I walked out, followed by Joe. “Thank you, Joe.” I said with my eyes fixed on his little face. “Molly is lovely.” Joe responded shyly. “I’m sorry that I didn’t welcome her as our new family member at first.” Joe apologized. He explained to me by saying he was worried Molly might take parental love away from him. I hugged him tightly and told him it was normal to think that way and assured him that nobody could replace him in Mom’s and Dad’s hearts.
