Andrew Holleman, a 12-year-old boy, loved playing in the open land near his home. The land was wet and forested, and made a home for the birds, other animals and many different plants. It made the perfect place for him to study and get to know the nature.
Suddenly it was announced that the "empty" land would be improved by a lot of houses on it. The plants would be removed, the animals would run away and most would probably die.
When he heard about the news, he was not happy. He was very worried that the land and water would be polluted.
Andrew wrote down clearly all the research he had done about the area, and how the houses would affect the local environment. He sent letters to members of local government and television reporters. He also called on his neighbors to oppose the building of the houses.
Although he was only 12 years old, he had the courage and wisdom of a person much older. Andrew's teachers described him as kind, shy and active. His classmates also admired (钦佩) how much he knew about local animals and plants, and the environment. Each day after school, Andrew went door-to-door, to ask the people to sign, who did not want the houses to be built. In only one month, he got the signatures (签名) of 250 people.
In the end, the land remained (保留) a safe place for birds, other animals and plants that belonged there.
Andrew won many prizes for his brave and great work to stop the houses being built, and help save the environment.

As climate change brings dangers to people, we are now facing another problem—underground climate change.
With the development of cities, the rising underground temperature is causing the ground to heat up and deform (变形), reported a study team from Northwestern University, US. In the last three years, the team had put more than 150 temperature sensors (感应器) under Chicago. The temperatures they recorded were surprising. For example, air temperatures in underground can be up to 25°C higher than the normal ground temperature. After collecting information in Chicago, the team created computer models to see how temperatures will influence the ground until 2051.
The models showed, when heated, the ground may go up by as much as 12 centimeters, or go down by as much as 0.8 centimeters. This may even cause the ground to break up, leaving people who live and work above in dangerous situations.
However, RottaLoria, who led the study, said in a report “it takes a long time to see the bad effects”. As scientists have already known a lot about underground climate change, future plans for cities should be considered. Materials that take in heat can be used to keep the heat from entering the ground.
The team also pointed out that the rising temperature could be seen as an opportunity. City planners can try to collect heat underground and send it above for heating.
( ) 56. According to the passage, what may NOT happen to the ground when heated
A. It may go up. B. It may go down.
C. It may break up. D. It may become smaller.
( ) 57. How does the writer express his idea in Paragraph 2
A. By telling a story. B. By asking a question.
C. By showing a picture. D. By giving an example.
( ) 58. What can we do to avoid the underground climate change
A. The number of people who take the underground should be limited.
B. Fans should be fixed in the ground.
C. The materials that can take in heat should be used.
D. More sensors can be put in the ground to record the temperature.
( ) 59 What can we infer (推测) from the passage
A. The underground heat may be used to warm the house in winter.
B. Climate change influences the underground temperature.
C. The underground temperature has risen to 25°C.
D. The rising underground temperature is causing the ground to heat up.

Five universities in Australia have partnered with 38 other organizations, including NASA to develop ideas for how to feed astronauts(宇航员) in space. Over the next 20 years, NASA is planning to send humans to the Moon and Mars. It wants to set up a long-lasting base on the Moon, which would mean having to keep astronauts happy and healthy with nutritious(营养的) meals for long periods.
For now, most space food is pre-made like ready meals. Scientists want astronauts to be able to grow fresh food in space, so they can replace their food and have a healthier diet. It could also stop astronauts from getting bored with their diet.
A team from Melbourne University is using robots (机器人) to grow food. These “farmbots” can plant seeds, keep the plants watered as they grow and harvest them when they are ready to eat. The farmbots can also measure things like temperature and growth. The farmbots have “E-noses” which can detect the smells given off by the plants. Used with sensors(传感器)in the soil, the technology can work out what the plants need. So far, leafy greens have been the easiest to grow.
The team has also been tested the effect the foods might have on humans in space by putting people in inclining (倾斜的) chairs. This tricks the body into feeling it is experiencing the “weightless” condition that people get in space. As they eat in this position, people’s physical and emotional (情绪的) responses are recorded.
These scientists want to make the plant-growing process automatic (自动的) on space missions. Professor Sigfredo Fuentes told that it would be like having “a smart fridge in space” where everything from food to medicines can be created from plant when needed.
( ) 61. According to paragraph 1, these organizations are studying ____________.
A. how to send humans to Mars B. how to keep astronauts happy
C. how to feed astronauts in space D. how to set up a base on Mars
( ) 62. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The diet of the astronauts in space. B. the reason for growing fresh food in space.
C. The effect of the food on humans in space. D. The way of growing fresh food in space.
( ) 63. What does the underlined word “detect” mean in Paragraph 3
A.检测 B.收集 C. 笼罩 D.消除
( ) 64. What is Sigfredo Fuentes’s attitude(态度) towards growing plants in space
A. puzzled B. Worried C. Supportive D. Doubtful(怀疑的)
( ) 65.What can we learn from the text
A. Scientists have grown greens in space so far.
B. The farmbots are the robots to help make ready meals.
C. Pre-made meals can stop astronauts from getting bored.
D. It’s possible for astronauts to eat fresh food in space in the future.

参考答案
Dear students,
School is our second home. It’s our duty to create civilized school.
As students, we should do everything we can to achieve the dream. First of all, we should obey the school rules. For example, we’d better go to school on time. Don’t be late for class. Second, we ought to protect the environment. We should use both sides of paper. We ought to turn off the lights when we leave the classroom. Don’t waste water. We shouldn’t pick flowers or walk on grass. Last but not least, it’s important for us to be polite to others. We should respect our teachers and help our classmates in need. I hope our school will be more and more civilized and beautiful.
