Whether yellow, red or white, the onion is a vegetable that you may not know well. The list of its uses in cooking is endless. People have used onions to add flavor (味道) to their foods for thousands of years. Besides onions’ great taste, they are very good for you. They have special chemicals that improve your ability to fight off illness and you have fewer chances of getting ill.
No matter how good onions are for you, it is difficult to cut an onion without your eyes filling with tears! When you cut an onion, irritating chemicals inside the onion will get into the air. They touch your whole eyes and cause pain. Your eyes make tears to wash away the chemicals and protect your eyes.
Luckily, cooks and scientists have discovered some ways to keep you from crying when you cut up onions.
●Cut the onion under running water. The water will wash away the chemicals before they can reach your eyes.
●Use a fan to blow air over the onion as you cut it. The air will blow the chemicals away from your eyes.
●Put the onion in a fridge for an hour before cutting. This helps make the chemicals in the onion move slowly, so they may not ever reach your eyes.
If you try out these good ideas and still cry while cutting onions, don’t worry. Scientists think that if you cut more onions, your body will become more resilient to the onion’s chemicals. So the tears will not last long. If you think about how healthy onions are, you might even call those tears “happy tears”.

One day, you open the fridge and find some moldy (发霉的) food. But before you can throw it away, your mother stops you. She doesn’t want to waste food. She cuts off the moldy part and eats the rest. Is it safe to do this
Mold (霉菌) can grow on almost all kinds of food. Mold is usually green, white, black or gray. Mold makes food soft and changes its color. Moldy food tastes quite bad and it’s not safe to eat.
If you find mold in soft food, just throw it away. Bread, tomatoes and hot dogs are soft food. This kind of food allows mold to easily grow below its surface.
But it’s easy to remove mold from hard food. The mold can’t grow very deeply inside this kind of food. According to the news, you should cut about 2.5 cm around and below the mold and remove it. It’s OK to cut the moldy parts out of hard food and eat the rest. But if the food is completely covered with mold, you should still throw it away.
Most kinds of mold are bad for us. But some kinds of mold can be used to make food. For example, penicillin (青霉素) can be used to make many types of cheeses, such as blue cheese. These cheeses are safe to eat and they’re quite delicious as well.

Prepared Dishes:
Definition (定义) & The Luo-Xi Bei Debate (辩论)
A public debate between Luo Yonghao and well-known restaurant chain Xi Bei has pushed prepared dishes into the national spotlight. They paid attention to two key points: consumer transparency (消费的透明度) and the definition of prepared dishes.
On September 10, Luo shared his dining e 46 on Weibo. He said that when he ate at a Xi Bei outlet with friends, nearly all dishes t 47 “uniform and lacking freshness”, which made him believe they were prepared dishes. These dishes were priced as h 48 as fully freshly cooked meals. He further suggested that the government should make laws to clearly show whether they use prepared dishes. “E 49 has the right to know what he is paying for.”
However, Xi Bei’s founder Jia Guolong answered strongly the next day. Jia stressed that Xi Bei never uses prepared dishes: its central kitchen only has basic s 50 , such as cleaning, and cutting, and every dish is finally cooked in the restaurant. He said they were d 51 from pre-made prepared dishes.
Luo didn’t back down. He o 52 100,000 yuan to anyone who could have videos or pictures of Xi Bei using prepared dishes, and he took another restaurant chain, Laoxiangji, as a good e 53 . He noted that Laoxiangji puts clear notes in stores to show which dishes are prepared.
The debate has aroused public discussion: some support Luo’s call, while others think food s 54 matters more than whether it’s a prepared dish. As the science d 55 , clearer standards (标准) are needed.

I had an unforgettable cooking experience with my parents. It was on Mom’s birthday. We planned to cook her favorite dishes, including mapo tofu and stir-fried eggs with tomatoes.
First, we gathered ingredients like tofu, eggs, tomatoes, onions, and seasonings such as salt and soy sauce. My dad cut up the tofu with a knife, my mom cracked the eggs into a bowl, and I washed the tomatoes. Then, we used a pan to fry the eggs and cooked the tofu. During the process, we worked together smoothly, chatting and laughing.
When the meal was served, Mom was very happy. This experience let me learn how to make these dishes. More importantly, it made me realize the power of teamwork and helped us create sweet memories, bringing our family closer.
