In early 2023, a year after my father's death, I started a journey to the Galápagos Islands, hoping to feel alive again.
At Post Office Bay, an old wooden barrel (桶) came into view. It is still used as a postbox. Travellers leave letters and take ones they can deliver(派送) themselves. Before sunrise, the sound of birdsong usually fills the air. But scientists have discovered that light pollution is leading birds to wake even earlier and go to sleep later. A study published in Science found that city birds begin singing about 18 minutes earlier and stop 32 minutes later than those in darker places every day.
To carry out the study, scientists worked with BirdWeather, a world project that collects bird sounds from volunteers. Using computers, they studied morning and evening bird songs. They then compared them with-NASA satellite data(卫星数据) showing nighttime brightness. This allowed them to study how city lights influence bird behavior.
