A Thief in the Night
James worked as a mechanic in a garage located in the centre of NewYork City. One day, When he finished his work, it was already very late and the last bus had gone. So James had to walk home. In order to get home quicker, he decided to take a shortcut through Central Park. It was dark and there were very few people in the park. James hardly met any one on the path he was taking. Naturally he had some fear. Robbery and murder were often reported in the neighbourhood. But James had no other choice.
Then somewhere in the middle of his path, James saw someone coming towards him from the opposite direction. He could not see the stranger clearly but he could tell it was a man of average build, just like himself. His fear began to grow. He tried not to look at the stranger and decided to veer so as to avoid him But when he veered, the stranger veered too. Unfortunately they veered in the same direction and bumped in passing.
When the stranger had gone, James was a little relieved. However, a few minutes later, James had a feeling that the bumping could hardly have been an accident. Why did the stranger veer in the same direction as me He recalled newspaper reports that thieves pretended to bump into people and picked their pockets. With this thought, James felt for his wallet in his pocket. It was gone.
James had no doubt that the stranger was a thief and had taken his wallet. Anger made him turn around. He caught up with the stranger and bravely demanded his wallet. The man gave it to him and went away.
When James got home, the first thing he saw was his wallet lying on the bed. There was no way to avoid the truth: He had robbed somebody.

A young Dutch inventor is widening his effort to cleanup floating (浮动的) plastic from the Pacific Ocean. He has developed a floating device (设备) to trap plastic waste moving into rivers before it reaches the oceans.
Boyan Slat was just 18 years old when he invented a system for catching waste in the ocean. He also founded an environmental group called “The Ocean Cleanup”. Its purpose is to develop the system. Last year, Slat showed the next step: a floating device which is called Interceptor. It removes plastic out of rivers. The device is powered by energy from the sun. “The 1,000 rivers are responsible for about 80% of plastic going into the world’s oceans,” said Slat. Three of the machines have already been used. Each machine costs about $775, 660, but the cost might drop as production increases.
Since they were used, the machines have been doing very well, collecting the plastic bottles and all the rubbish in the rivers. According to Slat, it is necessary to close “the tap”, which means preventing more plastic from reaching the ocean in the first place. He wanted to clean them all in the next five years. “This is not going to be easy, but if we do get this done, we could truly make our oceans again, ”said Slat.
The device is designed to be safe in rivers. Its nose is shaped to change directions to keep it away from larger floating things. It works by guiding plastic waste into an opening in the front of the device. The waste is then carried inside the machine where it is dropped into containers. The devices ends a text message to local operators that can come and empty it when it is full.
8.What do we know about Interceptor
A.It needs solar power to work. B.It is mainly used in the oceans.
C.It is being under test. D.It can help sort waste.
9.What does “the tap” refer to in Paragraph 3
A.The waste. B.The oceans.
C.The machines. D.The rivers.
10.What’s the function of the device’s nose
A.To ensure the device’s safety. B.To send operators text messages.
C.To empty the waste. D.To serve as containers.
11.Where is the text most likely from
A.A novel. B.A magazine.
C.A diary. D.A guidebook.
Schools in the US and elsewhere are announcing bans on the recently released AI — powered ChatGPT out of fear that students could use the technology to complete their assignments. However, bans may be practically impossible given how difficult it is to detect when text is composed by ChatGPT. Is it instead time to rethink how students are taught and evaluated
Educators are starting to question what it means to assess student learning if an AI can write an essay or paper similar to, or even better than, a student would — and the teacher can’t tell the difference. Many teachers believe the time-honored learning tradition will be destroyed from the ground up by Chat GPT. The Los Angeles Unified School District in California first blocked the use of ChatGPT on networks and devices in December 2022.
However, removing technology from the classroom can mean undesirable consequences, such as creating more obstacles for students with disabilities, says Trust. Additionally, restricting the use of ChatGPT on school networks and devices can’t stop students from using ChatGPT at home and in libraries.
It is also unclear if anti-cheating software can reliably detect AI-assisted writing. OpenAI is working to develop a digital watermark that can help teachers and academics spot students who are using ChatGPT to write essays. Open AI’s attempts to watermark AI text, however, hit limits.
Instead of worrying about how ChatGPT could enable cheating, educators should ask what motivates students to cheat in the first place and work on developing relationships of trust, says Jesse Stommel at the University of Denver in Colorado.
“Talk to students really frankly about what ChatGPT’s capable of, what it’s not,” says Stommel. “Have students use it to write an essay about Jane Austen and gender dynamics, and then have them read that essay and peer review it and think about what ChatGPT gets right and wrong.”
12.What does the author suggest schools do
A.Adjust teaching and assessment.
B.Meet different demands from students.
C.Prohibit the use of ChatGPT in classrooms.
D.Break with the traditional teaching method.
13.What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A.Dark future of ChatGPT. B.Educators’ worrying concern.
C.Crisis of traditional learning. D.Difficulty in telling AI’s writing.
14.What is the author’s attitude toward OpenAI’s watermark technology
A.Amused. B.Hopeful. C.Shocked. D.Doubtful.
15.What can be inferred from Jesse Stommel
A.AI helps students tell right and wrong.
B.Students should write about famous writers.
C.Educators should guide students to use AI properly.
D.The trust between teachers and students is hard to form.
Do you ever stop to question whether or not you’re on the right career path You might even be thinking, “How do I even know what the right career is ” If you’re feeling stuck, unsure, or confused, don’t worry. 16
Take career assessments.
Take career personality tests that can help tell you what you should be. A career test should be valid and reliable. The test should actually measure what it claims to measure, and you should get consistent results over multiple tries. 17 Remember, a career assessment isn’t a shortcut (捷径); it’s a tool. It’s up to you how you use it.
Make a list of your options.
18 Make a list of all your options, whether those are actual job opportunities, education, or career paths. Once you have everything written down, you can determine what isn’t exactly right, and narrow your goals. Then rank your options from best to worst.
Look for overlap (重叠).
What you’re good at, what companies need, and what you like to do might all be different, but it’s important to try to find the overlap between the three. 19 Rather than looking at job titles, consider your interests, hobbies, and skills, and then work out how those translate.
Ask a mentor (导师).
Never underestimate the value and power of a good mentor! There are many different types of mentors, from the kind you pay to the kind that has been there, done that, as well as the kind that can support you at work. 20
Finding your dream career isn’t easy, and the path can be scary. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth it!
A.That’s how you find your ideal career path.
B.Think about how much time you’ll spend at work.
C.You should know how to use the results to your advantage.
D.The more people you meet, the more insight you can get into how they enjoy the work.
E.Here are four steps you can take toward discovering the career that will truly satisfy you.
F.The right mentor, no matter what type, will give you guidance and help boost your career.
G.To find your dream career, you need to carefully sort through your options for the best route.

Penny’s Present
The sun was shining when Penny woke up. Usually she jumped out of bed with a happy smile for the new day. But today she just lay there frowning (皱眉).
This was the day before Mother’s Day, and Penny still had no present for Mama. She had forgotten about Mother’s Day until she had heard her brother Peter and sister Elizabeth talking last night. “I made Mama an apron (围裙) in sewing class,” Elizabeth had said proudly.
“What are you going to give Mama ” Peter asked Penny. Penny had not answered. She had ducked her head, ashamed to admit that she had spent her pocket money. She had nothing at all to give Mama on her special day.
Penny got out of bed and dressed slowly. The bag of candies she had bought yesterday reminded her of her terrible mistake.
“Well, here’s our littlest sleepyhead,” Mama said as Penny walked into the kitchen. She gave her a good-morning hug, and the smell of baked apples floated up from her apron. In a way, that made Penny feel worse because it reminded her of all the good things Mama did for her.
She remembered a hot day last summer when Mama had spent a whole afternoon making strawberry jam, because she knew Penny liked it. She thought of the moment when Mama polished her shoes and taught her to cut and arrange flowers. Sometimes she also taught Penny to make paper flowers with colorful petals (花瓣).
“Penny dear, can you eat a little faster ” Mama was talking to her. With surprise Penny noticed that everyone else had finished breakfast.
“I’m sorry, Mama.”
“Well, finish up. I have to visit old Mrs. Logan and read for her. But first, I want to get this kitchen cleaned up.” Penny watched her mother hurriedly cleaning up the kitchen. Mama was a very busy person. It seemed to Penny that sometimes Mama could use an extra pair of hands and two more feet. Suddenly she had an idea! There was a present she could give Mama, and it might be better than anything she could buy.

47.The next morning, Penny slid into the room with a package. Inside the package were some crayons, a pair of scissors and some pieces of paper together with a pencil and a glue stick. She was determined to make a special flower. She did as what her mother used to tell her. First, some lines were needed to remind her where she could cut out the petals and then the glue was necessary for forming a flower. At last, she used different crayons to color all the six petals. On the early morning of Mother’s Day, Penny couldn’t wait to present her present to Mama.
“Read the petals of the Promise Flower, Mama,” Penny said. Curious and surprised, Mama held the green petal, where a promise that she would get up on time every day appeared. Then on the blue petal, Penny stated she would polish the shoes by herself. Then Mama turned to the yellow petal, which said “Penny” would never be the last to finish the meals. While Mama was reading the fourth, fifth and sixth petal, a satisfied smile gradually spread on her face. This was the best gift she had ever received. And as for Penny, she had faith that she would try her best to keep those promises.
