The Barbie doll is a famous toy in the Western countries because of her long legs and blonde hair. But did you know that over 1,000 years ago in China, there were dolls just as beautiful and popular
Beijing silk figurines (北京绢人) are made from thin silk, gauze and damask. In 2021, the art of making these dolls was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产).
Jiao Tianqi, 30, is an inheritor of Beijing silk figurines. “For many people, these silk figurines are just art pieces, but to me, they are like my children,” Jiao said.
Making a silk figurine takes many steps, like designing, painting and making clothes. Artists must make sure the doll’s head and body are the right size. “For a standing doll, the head should be 1/7 of the body. For a sitting doll, the head should be 1/5 of the body,” Jiao said.
Silk figurines are made to look like people from famous stories. The artists want to show what kind of person each character is. When making Wang Xifeng from Dream of the Red Chamber, Jiao studied her hairpin (发簪) look from the 1987 TV series to show she is an important person in the Jia family. “For Lin Daiyu, we made her look down shyly. This shows that she feels a little lonely,” Jiao said.
Since making silk figurines takes time and hard work, few people carry on the art. To help with this problem, Jiao and her team are using AI technology to make designing easier.
