In a world full of apps, some are designed not for serious tasks — but for life’s small annoyances and awkward moments. Here are eight unusual apps that might help you laugh at, or even escape from, everyday challenges:
D-CIDE
Planning a group meal One person is a vegetarian, another is sensitive to nuts, and someone just wants a quiet space. Type in everyone’s needs, and this app finds a restaurant nearby that works for all.
uHUH
Listening to someone go on and on about themselves Turn on this app, and it will respond with “Right!” and “No way!” so you can seem engaged while doing something else you are really interested in.
OopsHa
Sent a group text saying something embarrassing — only to realize the person you mentioned is in the group This app sends a follow-up blaming it on autocorrect.
Avoyd
Not in the mood to run into your neighbor or that overly chatty classmate This app lets you know when they’ve left the building.
PemaFinder
A friend keeps texting you about how sad they are, but you don’t know what to say. This app offers kind, comforting quotes you can send to help.
Crowdz
Looking for a chill place without loud crowds This app finds cafés and hangouts where you can relax without too much noise.
WhoRaisedU
If the sound of someone eating popcorn — or anything else — makes you uncomfortable, this white-noise app can help. Just put on your headphones and choose a sound option — like “Popcorn,” “Mac and Cheese,” or “Banana” — to block out those distracting, unpleasant table noises with calming background sound.

As a Spanish major, I chose the IES Santiago program because it provides opportunities for service-learning programs. During my first few weeks in Santiago, I visited various organizations to get an idea of what fields I could work in. On the brochure from the Asociación Nacional de Discapacitado Mental (ANDIME), a school for children with Down syndrome (唐氏综合征), I noticed there was a music therapist (治疗师) on staff. Since my other major is music, this seemed like an ideal opportunity to get a taste of the profession.
At ANDIME, I was able to work with Ernesto, a professional music therapist, for a few hours twice a week. I spent my hours at ANDIME walking and clapping with the music, swaying and bouncing with hula hoops (呼啦圈), beating on drums, singing songs, conducting concerts, and loving a group of extremely lovely kids.
By far my most memorable moment at ANDIME happened during one of my classes with Ernesto. Most of the students had severe cases of Down syndrome, and several of them couldn’t speak and were only minimally responsive. One such student, Miguelito, was even unable to sit still, make controlled movements, or fix his eyes on anything.
On this particular day, Ernesto brought out a brand new instrument to use with the class. Ernesto held the instrument in front of Miguelito’s face. We watched excitedly as Miguelito’s eyes began to search for its sound and slowly follow it up and down. A seemingly small event was a big step in the development of this little boy.
Now back in the U.S., I am unsure of my next step. Between looking for jobs and picking out which path to pursue, I love going back to my photographs and remembering the school and my students. The pride shining in their eyes was a reward in itself.
24.According to paragraph 1, the author chose ANDIME partly because ________.
A.he didn’t have better choices
B.his friends recommended it
C.he loved the atmosphere there
D.he had learned music before
25.Which of the following best describes the author’s activities at ANDIME
A.Demanding. B.Colorful.
C.Repetitive. D.Ordinary.
26.How did Miguelito respond to the new instrument
A.He showed no interest in it.
B.He wanted to play it on his own.
C.He was deeply attracted to it.
D.He expressed his love in words.
27.What can we infer about the author from the last paragraph
A.He is determined to continue pursuing music.
B.He feels confused about his future.
C.He desires to work again for ANDIME.
D.He is grateful for his experience at ANDIME.

The Produce Aggregation Program, run by Southside Community Land Trust (SCLT), connects small-scale urban farmers with local communities in need of healthy food. The program collects and processes crops from multiple farmers, combining them into larger quantities for wholesale distribution. This helps overcome challenges small farms face, such as limited production capacity and lack of access to processing facilities and distribution networks.
SCLT operates a farm-to-market processing center and manages logistics (后勤) for regular distribution. The program supports 27 farmers, many of whom are refugees, immigrants, or members of marginalized communities. While many of the farmers still rely on farmer markets, the program provides a more stable income source.
Twice weekly during the growing season, SCLT orders produce from participating farmers, who deliver it to the food hub. There, it is sorted and packed into $20-value bags, each containing a variety of fresh produce. These are distributed at no cost through community partners such as clinics, recreation centers, and childcare programs. Some clinics distribute the produce through VeggieRx, a program where doctors prescribe (开处方) vegetables to patients.
The program is currently funded by the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program, which was launched to support underserved farmers and increase food access. However, funding uncertainty remains a challenge. Rising costs, supply chain issues, limited land availability, and climate change all add strain to food assistance programs.
Despite these obstacles, SCLT continues its year-round work to improve food access. In addition to the Produce Aggregation Program, the nonprofit supports 60 community gardens, offers training, and runs educational programs and internships. Altogether, its efforts provide healthy, culturally relevant food to about 1, 200 families annually, with the support of local farmers, volunteers, and community partners.
28.What does the Produce Aggregation Program mainly do for small farms
A.Improve their production ability.
B.Gather crops for large sales.
C.Offer free processing equipment.
D.Sharpen their planting skills.
29.How does the Produce Aggregation Program ensure stable income for farmers
A.By hiring them to do farm work.
B.By adding produce variety.
C.By counting on farmer markets.
D.By providing orders regularly.
30.What does the underlined word “strain” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Burden. B.Gain. C.Hope. D.Duty.
31.What would be a suitable title for the text
A.Fighting Urban Poverty B.New Struggles for Small Farms
C.Feeding the Neighbors D.New Trends in Urban Farming
D
Rise with the sun and rest at sunset — this was the way of life for our ancestors. Thanks to artificial light, which improves visibility at night, we can enjoy a much safer society and around-the-clock productivity. For wildlife, however, studies have shown it disturbs animals’ natural sleep cycles, affects amphibian (两栖的) reproduction and throws migrating birds off course.
New research in Frontiers in Plant Science investigated how artificial light impacts plant-insect relationships. Researchers from Chinese Academy of Sciences noticed tree leaves in cities typically showed fewer signs of insect damage than those outside of cities, so they analyzed 5,500 leaf samples from two tree species throughout Beijing. Researchers found more artificial light in a given area meant tougher leaves. And the tougher the leaf, the less evidence of hungry insects. They don’t fully understand why, but assume that trees under artificial light at night might be extending their photosynthesis (光合作用) time.
“Plants distribute their limited resources, such as nutrients, water and energy, among various functions like growth, reproduction and defense, depending on the environment. Light can affect how plants use resources,” says Ellen Cieraad, a plant ecologist from New Zealand. “Since plants use light for growth, artificial night light could be unnaturally increasing the time trees spend on photosynthesis, allocating more resources to chemical compounds that make leaves tougher.”
“If the same applied to leaves of other species, this would be bad news for insects,” researchers said. Changes in plants, and in interactions between plants and animals, can significantly impact the entire urban ecosystem. Herbivorous insects, which rely on leaves for food, may struggle to survive, disrupting the food chain. Fewer herbivorous insects could lead to declines in predators like birds, affecting biodiversity. Insects also play vital roles as pollinators (传粉媒介) and eat decaying plants, helping to break down leaves and returning nutrients to soil. In cities, healthy soil and healthy plant life supported by insects are good for humans, as plants provide shade and reduce heat trapped in cities. Moving forward, researchers are committed to refining their discovery, aiming to guide people to take corresponding actions.
32.What influence does artificial light bring according to the text
A.It toughens tree leaves. B.It shortens animals’ sleep hours.
C.It illuminates birds’ migrating routes. D.It increases amphibian reproduction rates.
33.Why is Ellen Cieraad quoted in paragraph 3
A.To raise a concern. B.To introduce a concept.
C.To support an assumption. D.To clarify a misunderstanding.
34.Which of the following best summarizes the phenomenon in paragraph 4
A.Time heals all wounds. B.Nature always finds a way.
C.A chain is as strong as its weakest link. D.A small move may affect the bigger picture.
35.What will the following research probably focus on
A.Approaches to enhancing soil quality. B.Ways of improving urban biodiversity.
C.Standards for selecting plant species in cities. D.Solutions to reducing impacts of nighttime light.

If anyone had told me three years ago that I would be spending most of my weekends camping, I would have laughed heartily. Campers, in my eyes, were people who enjoyed insect bites, ill-cooked meals, and uncomfortable sleeping bags. They had nothing in common with me. 36 The friends who introduced me to camping thought that it meant to be a pioneer. 37 We sleep in a tent, cooked over an open fire, and walked a long distance to take the shower and use the bathroom. This brief visit with Mother Nature cost me two days off from work, recovering from a bad case of sunburn and the doctor’s bill for my son’s food poisoning. I was, nevertheless, talked into going on another fun-filled holiday in the wilderness. 38 Instead, we had a pop-up camper with comfortable beds and an air conditioner. My nature-loving friends had remembered to bring all the necessities of life. 39 We have done a lot of it since. Recently, we bought a twenty-eight-foot travel trailer complete with a bathroom and a built-in TV set. There is a separate bedroom, a modern kitchen with a refrigerator. The trailer even has matching carpet and curtains. 40 It must be true that sooner or later, everyone finds his or her way back to nature. I recommend that you find your way in style.
A.This time there was no tent.
B.Things are going to be improved.
C.The trip they took me on was a rough one.
D.However, I have learned a lot about camping since then.
E.I must say that I have really come to like camping.
F.After the trip, my family became very interested in camping.
G.There were no modern conveniences to make life easier.

When I worked as a nurse, I was on day duty while my workmates were on night duty. On one shift, I sensed something just before going off duty at 11 am. I put down the tray(托盘) on the table and suddenly it fell off the table. At first I thought I had accidentally knocked it over, but then I felt the whole building shaking and heard patients were screaming.
I realized that an earthquake was happening. I quickly caught hold of a nearby patient, who was terribly frightened and pushed her under a bed. And then, I got under another bed myself. As soon as the earthquake stopped, I decided to try and get the patient safely outside. I carried her out and helped her down to the grassland, where several other people had gathered.
Afraid that my other workmates were in danger, I went back inside the building again. When I met Lucy ,our ward sister(护士长),I found her patient couldn't walk. We made a seat for the patient by linking our hands and arms, and carried her outside together. We went back through the building to check no one was left behind in our ward(病房).
Just then, we saw that a man doctor was calling for volunteers to go down to other wards with him to help more people. So we went together. The doctor went ahead of us and found one of the nurses partially covered with rubble(碎石),luckily still alive. Suddenly, the aftershock (余震)struck and the doctor ordered us to leave. The brave doctor intended to stay alone and risk his own life to save the nurse.

66.Dear Shiyan High School,
I’m John Clarke, a 2025 graduate from Shiyan High School. Knowing with delight that a big celebration for the 100th Anniversary is around the corner, I would like to extend my utmost congratulations!
My three years here has witnessed the considerable achievements of our school. The wide range of curriculum and the fascinating after-class activities were eye-opening to me, giving me a deep insight into the core of Chinese education. Yet what impressed most, also the most touching memory, was no doubt the care and love I received when I was ill in hospital.
Finally, happy birthday to my Alma mater and I sincerely hope you will fulfill further success.
Yours sincerely,
John Clarke
67.However, without any hesitation, we made up our minds to stay with the doctor and save the nurse together. The doctor encouraged the trapped nurse to stay calm, and in the meanwhile ,we focused our efforts on removing the bricks and the rubble that trapped her body. However, sometimes we were faced with falling rubble from time to time, despite which we continued. Gradually and slowly, we lifted the nurse out of the rubble. The doctor put the nurse on his back and walked out of the building with the help of us. Finally, all, including patients, nurses and doctors, were in the safe place.
Later in the afternoon, I I had time to look around and saw the some destroyed buildings. My beautiful workplace lay beyond recognition, even some in ruins. At the sight of this, I felt a weight in my chest. Suddenly, the gentle wind danced around me, which made me thought of all the people surviving the earthquake with our help. It was our teamwork that made a difference. I held the firm belief that some day in the future my workplace would came back to life and took on a new look, where we would continue working together to save more patients.
听力原材料:
Text1:M: Hello. Is Dr. Know available at nine tomorrow morning
W: Let me check. I’m sorry but he’s tied up until ten o’clock.
M: Well, can’t you squeeze me in, somehow
W: I’m afraid not. Will eleven o’clock be all right
M: Well, that’s OK then. Thank you.
Text2:W: In what specific ways will our company benefit from hiring you
M: Well, my technical background is very helpful for your company and I have enough knowledge to market the products.
W: Good. We’ll contact you by email soon to inform you of the result.
Text3:W: Mr Lee, I’ll be going back to Switzerland soon. I’m being transferred to our main office.
M: What a surprise! I thought you were going to Sweden office. All of us at San Francisco will miss you!
Text4:M: I’ve learned so much about France, like its cities, food, and customs.
W: Yes, by living there for the past few months, you have learned a lot, especially its culture. But in order to get even better at speaking French, you need to expand your vocabulary.
Text5:W:Excuse me. Is there a bus station near here
M:Sorry. I’m new in the city, but I just saw a bus coming from that direction. You might find one over there.
W:Thanks. I’ll just ask that guard over there. I’m sure he’ll know this area well.
M:That’s a good idea.
Text5:W: Hi, I have an appointment for car maintenance. My name is Monica.
M: I’m sorry, Ms. Monica, but we’re pretty busy now. We might not be able to get to your car until the early evening. Would you like to put it off to tomorrow morning if you don’t want to wait that long
W: Oh, I’m going out of town then. Driving, actually. That’s why I scheduled my appointment for this afternoon. Is there anything you can do to speed up the process
M: Let me see... Our records say you don’t really need an oil change yet. That means we can get the job done more quickly.
W: That sounds good.
Text7:W: What did you do during the earthquake, James
M: Stayed in bed.
W: What do you mean Didn’t you try to get outside
M: No. I had got a terrible flu, so I just stayed in bed.
W: So what happened
M: Well, I must have slept through the earthquake, although nobody believes me. They said it was noisy. Then I woke up at 4:00 in the morning, still feeling terrible with the flu, eyes running, nose running. You know how you feel when you’ve got the flu.
Text8:M: What specific areas do you think we can reduce our expenses
W: Well, we should stop eating out from now on.
M: We could save a significant amount if we try to cook more at home. While I support the idea of cooking more, I’d still like us to go out for a relaxing meal once in a while.
W: Fair enough. And we could be more conscious of turning off lights when they are not in use. Additionally, we can explore energy-efficient alternatives like LED lights.
M: Absolutely. Leave it to me. I’ll go to the store and get some later. After lunch, I promise to change all the lights.
W: Good. Besides, instead of going to the movies or theme parks frequently, we can look for free or low-cost options like local parks or movie nights at home.
M: I completely agree.
W: Lastly, we often end up paying for subscription services we rarely use. There’s one we can cancel — newspapers.
M: That’s a wise suggestion. My dad used to read newspapers when he lived with us. Now that he has moved back home, we don’t need them anymore.
Text9:M: Hello, Ms. Kate Berry. We often think of libraries as places for borrowing books, but your Eugene Public Library has surprised us by offering so much more, like board games, arts and crafts, and even musical instruments.
W: Haha, that’s true! We have a special section for checking out non-literary items. Recently we’ve added something truly unique: robot cats.
M: Really Could you tell us more about that
W: Of course. The robot cats were brought in for a special reason. They were bought for the visitors who may be alone and in need of the company. They make sounds like real cats, sit on your legs, and enjoy nothing more than a good brush, which is really comforting.
M: Well, how many robot cats do you have
W: Each of our three library floors has one for visitors, and we have two additional ones for our staff. I understand the staff has also taken a liking to them.
M: That’s great to hear. Adding these robot cats is such a fantastic way to show how libraries can do more than just lend books. You’re not just offering resources. You’re helping build a community that cares about emotional support.
Text10:A heartbreaking image captures a young polar bear sleeping on the melting pieces of a tiny iceberg. British part-time photographer Nima Sarikhani captured the scene in Svalbard, which sits deep inside the Arctic Circle, around 500 miles from the North Pole. The image was crowned the winner of this year’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year People’s Choice Award. After three days of desperately searching for polar bears through thick fog, Sarikhani finally spotted two polar bears — a younger male and an older male. Just before midnight, as the ship got close to the bears, the younger one climbed onto a small iceberg and carved out a bed with his paws before falling asleep. Sarikhani said this photograph has caused strong emotions in many of those who have seen it. An estimated 26,000 polar bears remain in the wild, and they are at the risk of dying out as rising temperatures melt away the sea ice these animals depend on. Director of the Natural History Museum said, “The heartbreaking image allows us to see the beauty and fragility of our planet. His thought-provoking image is a striking reminder of the essential bond between an animal and its habitat and serves as a visual representation of the harmful impacts of climate warming and habitat loss.” Sarikhani said he hoped his photograph could inspire hope. He added there is still time to fix the mess we have caused.
