Do you know what a resolution is A resolution is a promise that you make to yourself. People make resolutions to improve their life. The most common kind is a New Year’s resolution. After all, the start of the year is often
a perfect time for making
resolutions.
Making Resolutions
Resolutions can be about anything. Some are about physical health. For example, some people may promise to exercise more or eat more healthily. Some resolutions have to do with learning new things. People might decide they are going to take up a hobby, like painting or photography. And some resolutions
have to do with self-improvement, like
becoming more confident or organized.
For example, a student may decide to
start a new study plan.
Although there are differences, most resolutions have one thing in common: People hardly ever keep them! But there are good reasons for this. Sometimes the
resolutions may be too
difficult to keep. And
sometimes people just
forget about them.
To make your resolutions work, you need to plan them wisely. Always make sure your resolution is possible to achieve. Don’t set a goal that is too difficult or too much for you. Try to set mini-goals to help you achieve your resolution. And if you don’t want to forget your resolutions, write them down.
Also, talk about them with your
family and friends. Encourage
them to remind you of your goals.
So what resolutions are you going
to make How are you going to
keep them
New Year is coming soon.
What things are you going to do next year
I’m going to get lots of exercise.
I’m going to get a part time job.
Let’s make new year’s Resolutions!
I’m going to practice the piano every day.
I’m going to learn a new language.
We can make some other New Year's resolutions.
For the coming new year, what resolutions are you going to make How are you going to keep them
I’m going to make two resolutions.
First, I’ll improve my English in this term. I decide to expand my English vocabulary by learning at least five new words every day.
Further thinking
Second, I’ll take up a new hobby — cooking. I plan to learn to cook some Chinese dishes by watching the cooking programmes online.
Discuss the questions.
1e
1. Do you think it is useful to make resolutions Why or why not
2. Do you like to plan ahead or do things at the last moment Why
set clear goals/ give a direction for life/ develop good habits/ encourage self-improvement/ organize life/ inspire (激励) and give the energy to pursue(追求) dreams …
too hard to keep/ unexpected things break them easily/ just words, people forget them soon/ create stress, which harms mental health …
1. Do you think it is useful to make resolutions Why or why not
I think making resolutions is useful. Resolutions help us set clear goals.
For example, if we make a resolution to study English for 30 minutes every day, we can develop good habits and make progress slowly. They also give us direction. Once we set a goal, we are more likely to take action. But we should make sure our resolution is possible to achieve. If a resolution is too difficult, we may give up easily. So as long as we make reasonable resolutions and stick to them, they can be very helpful.
Example for question 1
Plan ahead
Do things at the last moment
keep me organized and avoid rushing
help me save time and avoid mistakes
ensure (确保) I don’t miss important details
give me more flexibility (灵活性)
avoid over-preparation and save energy
urgency (紧迫性) sometimes brings better focus(专注力)
2. Do you like to plan ahead or do things at the last moment Why
I like to plan ahead. Planning ahead makes me feel organized.
For example, if I have a math test next week, I can make a study plan and review a little each day. This way, I won’t feel stressed at the last minute. Planning also helps me use time better. I can finish tasks step by step and have more time to relax or do other things I like. Doing things at the last moment often makes me rush and make mistakes. So planning ahead is a better choice for me.
