Shanghai’s Chongming Dongtan National Nature Reserve (上海崇明东滩国家自然保护区) has been added to the World Heritage List. It is the city’s first World Natural Heritage Site. Starting from 2002, the reserve has tried a number of ways to get rid of these plants. Finally, a plan was worked out. The first step was to build physical barriers (物理屏障) to 40 spread of the grass. Once the barriers were built, water was allowed into small areas. Above the water line, the grass was cut. Their roots were left underwater for half a year. This 41 killed these roots. When the soil dried out, native plants were replanted.
The method has proved to be 42 . “Our bird monitoring results have shown a great increase in the population of birds here,” says a worker at the reserve. One example is the little swans. “The total population monitored in Dongtan in the 1990s was 3,000 to 3,500. In 2000, the number of the little swans 43 quickly. But during the recent wintering season, we counted more than 2,900 little swans.” says another staff member. When I studied in Europe for half a year, I had many chances to visit Germany and neighbouring countries. Nearly every country I visited used the Euro (欧元), so exchanging money wasn’t a problem, but deciding how to pay was.
I began with American Express traveller’s checks during my first month. I’d never been to a foreign country and traveller’s checks were my safest __65__. They were insured, which meant that American Express would replace them for free if they were lost or stolen. I cashed them into Euros at a bank in Freiburg and lived __66__ with the funds. Later I opened a bank account. I used the bank’s ATM to take away cash throughout the rest of time. In Freiburg I found credit cards (信用卡) unhelpful, most of my purchases were small and from small stores. Cash was easiest. And __67__ Freiburg is a small quiet city, I didn’t feel any danger when I was carrying cash. This was not always the case in other countries.
I always carried a credit card, my ATM card and cash wherever I went. The reason for this was safety. My credit card had a __68__ limit which was great for emergency use. Using the ATM card was safer than carrying much cash in my wallet. A small amount of cash was perfect for food and small goods. I never had trouble with thieves, but two of my friends weren’t so __69__. In Nice, France, my friend Anne had her backpack stolen while we were eating lunch at McDonald’s. Someone walked right by and caught it—we didn’t notice until we got up to leave. In Rome, another friend’s wallet was stolen from her backpack. The next day, she caught a pickpocket reaching into her bag and __70__ him. But of course there was nothing left for him to steal.
I learned from their experiences and now try to be especially careful when I’m in unfamiliar places. Careful planning and wise decisions help me worry less about keeping my money safe.

New York City’s police department (NYPD) has decided to return a robot dog. Though the robot worked well, it upset many people. Some thought it was “creepy (吓人的)”. Others w 71 that it would invade (侵犯) their privacy.
Spot is a dog-shaped robot built by a tech company. The robot has four legs, so even on rough ground it can move e 72 . Instead of a head, the robot has a camera. It also has a microphone and a speaker, and people can control it from a distance.
In December, 2020, the NYPD announced (宣布) that it would begin using a special version of Spot. Their robot was painted blue. It has a special camera to allow it to “see” everything on all sides of it. They called their version “Digidog”.
The robot cost the NYPD about $94,000. That may seem like a lot of money, but it’s cheap for a robot.
When it announced Digidog, the NYPD said, “This dog is going to save lives, protect people, and protect officers, and that’s our g 73 . ”
They soon found out that not everyone was excited about the robot as they were. After the robot was brought to an emergency call in February, a video of it was shared w 74 , and upset a lot of people.
Many people were concerned that the police were using an electronic dog for spying (暗中监视). Others felt like it was wrong for the police to spend money on machines. They should focus on p 75 .
For many people, the concern wasn’t just about this robot dog, but about what future police robots might look like. For example, they feared that the police might use a robot that could control its o 76 movements, or one that carried weapons.
When the dog was used a 77 in late April, 2021, another video was shared on the Internet. Many people were still upset. As a result of the strong public reaction, the NYPD decided to get rid of Digidog, and to return him to the tech company.
D. Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题) (12分)
I was an unlucky nurse who had to work on Christmas Day. It was always quiet in the emergency room on this day, so I was not expecting any patients. When I was complaining about working on such a beautiful festival, five people showed up at my desk—a pale woman and four small children.
“Are you all sick ” I asked suspiciously (怀疑地) because they seemed all right.
“Yes,” the woman answered weakly and lowered her head.
But when they started to present their problems, things got a little vague (模糊的). The children had earaches, but they couldn’t tell me which ear was in pain. The mother complained of a cough, but she seemed to be pretending.
Something was wrong. I didn’t say anything but explained that it might take a while before a doctor could meet them. “Take your time, please,” the mother responded. On a hunch (出于直觉), I checked their charts (记录)—no address. Suddenly I knew, they were homeless and the hospital was warm.
I looked out at the family, huddling together under the Christmas tree, smiling and chatting with each other sweetly. Quietly, I went back to the nurses’ station and told them that we had a homeless family in the waiting room. It was just like God sending us a gift on Christmas Day. We took out our meals for our Christmas “patients”. We also put together oranges and apples as presents. We worked hard to exceed (超过) the needs of a family who only wanted a warm place on Christmas Day.
Later, when the family was leaving, the 4-year-old girl ran back and gave me a kiss. “Thanks for _____________________ today,” she whispered in my ear.
The author was unhappy to work on Christmas Day, wasn’t she

C. Wang, a 13-year-old boy from China, has become popular after he gave a lecture at the China Internet Security Meeting in September. In the lecture, he explained a problem in an educational computer system. Since then, many people call him “the youngest hacker in China”.
When Wang was still a Grade Two student in a primary school, he started to write some short programmes after he felt bored playing computer games. He set up his first website at the age of ten using his pocket money. He is now studying in Grade Eight in a junior school in Beijing. To people’s surprise, Wang learned to write programmes all by himself.
Recently, Wang hacked an online shopping site and changed the price of an item from 2,500 yuan to only one yuan. And instead of buying a lot of them, he told the website the risks. He was very pleased when he found one. But he said he would not use his wisdom for doing something against laws.
By attending the meeting, Wang didn’t want to show off his excellent ability. Instead, he wanted people to know that everybody must be careful with the Internet risks.

D. Never try to work when you are very hungry. If you decide to do your homework right after school, you may get something to eat before you get to work. Always do your homework before you get too tired. Don’t wait until very late in the evening, or your work will seem much harder than it really is. If you have more than an hour’s work, give yourself a break after an hour. On the other hand don’t break it up so much that you can’t get anything done, you should be able to work at least half an hour at a time without stopping.
Don’t put it off until the last minute. If you put off doing your homework, you will have it on your mind, and you won’t enjoy your free time so much. If you put it off until the end of the week or until right before a test, you will have too much catching up to do. A little bit each night, enough to keep up with what is happening each day in school, will take the fear out of tests and keep you on top of it all.
Do your homework at the same time every evening. This will help you make it a habit. It will make it easier to do, and it will make your free time more enjoyable as well.
