Living and dealing with kids can be a tough job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even tougher.
If I have learned anything in my 16 years, it is that communication is very important, both when you disagree and when you get along. With any relationship, you need to let the other person know how you are feeling. If you are not able to communicate, you drift apart. When you are mad at your parents, or anyone else, not talking to them doesn’t solve anything.
Communication begins with the concerns of another. It means that you can’t just come home from school, go up to your room and take no notice to anyone. Even if you just say “Hi”, and see how their day was for five minutes, it is better than nothing.
If you looked up the word “communication” in a dictionary, it would say “the exchange of ideas, the conveyance (表达) of information, correspondence (通信), means of communication: a letter or a message”. To keep a good relationship, you must keep communication strong. Let people know how you feel, even if it’s just by writing a note.
When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about how they are doing as a parent. If you are trying to make them see something as you see it, tell them that you’ll listen to what they have to say, and ask them politely to listen to you. Shouting or walking away only makes the situation worse.
Here is an example: one night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends. She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but she didn’t feel she could just ask to go home. That would be rude. After all, they had been nice enough to take her along with them. Needless to say, she was late getting home. Her parents were mad at first, but when Sophie explained why she was late, they weren’t as mad and let it munication is the key here. If Sophie’s parents had not been willing to listen, Sophie would have been in a lot of trouble.
Communication isn’t a one-way matter: it goes both ways. Just remember: if you get into a situation like Sophie’s, tell the other person how you feel—listening is the key to communication.
24. The underlined phrase “drift apart” in Paragraph 2 means ______.
A. move along smoothly B. distance yourself from others
C. keep up with others D. come closer to each other
25. According to the passage, communication begins with ______.
A. sharing your own feelings openly
B. starting a talk with a written message
C. being aware of others' needs and feelings
D. responding to others' actions immediately
26. The author uses Sophie’s example in paragraph 6 to show that ______.
A. parents should always forgive their kids
B. it’s rude to leave a party early
C. communication is the key to solving problems
D. friends are more important than parents
27. What can we learn from the passage about the nature of effective communication with parents
A. It requires kids to completely accept parents' opinions to avoid arguments.
B. It needs mutual willingness to listen and express thoughts politely.
C. It mainly depends on writing notes since verbal communication is often ineffective.
D. It works best when kids keep silent and let parents talk first.
C
Life is always changing — sometimes great, other times worrying and stressful. There are lots of benefits in accepting the unexpected and simple things you can do to make it easier to deal with life changes.
There can be lots of new things that happen in your life. Some can be really positive things that you make happen yourself, like joining a club or making a new friend. However, some changes you face could make you feel worried or uncertain. They can be big things like moving schools, a friend going away or family life changing because of parents separating. They can be smaller ones like new schedules at home due to parents’ or carers’ working habits or a teacher you don’t know taking over your class. All of these things can bring up some pretty big feelings — and that’s OK.
Why can it be hard to deal with Change can be difficult because it often brings feelings of uncertainty. Emily Hanlon is a child psychologist (someone who studies how children think, feel and behave) who explains, “Our brains like habits and usual actions. They help us feel safe. When something changes, like starting a new school or moving to a new home, it can feel like entering a new place. It is like going on a surprise adventure with no map. This can make us feel nervous or afraid because we don’t know what will come next.” Change can also be hard if you don’t feel quite ready for it, or that you are not in control of whatever is happening.
Can change be a good thing Yes — life would be very boring if everything stayed the same all the time. Trying new things and making changes helps you find what you like and dislike. For example, if you didn’t taste that new kind of ice cream, how would you know you love it It also helps you grow and learn skills. Hanlon says, “While change can feel frightening, it often brings new adventures, new friends, and new special abilities — well, maybe not great strengths, but surely the abilities to get back confidence and grow stronger.”
28. Which of the following is a small life change
A. A friend going away. B. Your parents separating.
C. You moving to a new school. D. A new teacher taking over your class.
29. According to Emily Hanlon, a “surprise adventure with no map” is used ______.
A. to explain why change feels difficult B. to suggest ways to avoid changes
C. to describe how habits make us safe D. to compare changes to surprise adventures
30. What is the main idea of the last paragraph
A. Change helps you feel sure about yourself. B. Change makes life full of new adventures.
C. Change makes life feel boring and stressful. D. Change helps you avoid new experiences.
31. Which of the following best matches the writer’s opinion
A. A kid refuses to accept his step-father. B. A teenager tries a new hobby and loves it.
C. A student shies away from making new friends. D. A child practices erhu daily and wins the match.
D
Imagine waking up one morning to find your smartphone missing. You can no longer get guided to work, order your coffee, or connect with friends. For most of us, it is a nightmare (噩梦). But it should not be exactly far-fetched.
Despite being more digitally connected than ever, we are lonelier and more anxious. Anxiety rates increased by 25% globally. Depression now affects over 280 million people worldwide. All of this is due to our growing dependence on social media and smart technologies designed to offer quick relief but often at the expense of deep, meaningful engagement, which may further cause our loss of something easy to be ignored.
Though these conveniences offer short-term relief, they may weaken our thinking skills. For example, GPS has undoubtedly changed how we travel. But a 2020 study found that frequent GPS users struggle more with self-guided navigation (航行). Over time, those who depended more on GPS showed a sharp loss in special memory and problem-solving skills. However, reducing dependence on these conveniences can lead to discomfort. In seeking comfort today, we might be trading away some discomfort.
That is the problem: the very discomfort we avoid is often what strengthens us. Viewing stress, a kind of discomfort, as a challenge rather than a threat leads to better results. Research shows that mild stress can improve adaptability (适应性). Neuroscience (神经科学) shows that neuroplasticity — the brain’s ability to form new connections — is improved through challenging experiences. This adaptability is important for developing resilience (抗逆力), a process fueled by both mental challenges and active effort.
But this doesn’t mean we should reject comfort entirely; it’s to balance it with intentional discomfort. Think of it as “microdosing hardship” — a series of small, manageable difficulties that keep our mental and emotional muscles strong, such as writing with a pen, or washing dishes by hand. These small acts are enough to reawaken the resilience we’ve buried under layers of ease. So, the next time you feel the pull of ease, pause. Ask yourself: Is this momentary comfort helping me grow or is it keeping me stuck Choosing discomfort isn’t easy, but sometimes, it’s worth it.
32. What does the underlined word “far-fetched” in Paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Possible to change. B. Certain to function. C. Unable to be accepted. D. Unlikely to be settled.
33. What may digital conveniences cause according to the text
A. The meaningful engagement. B. The fast but worthless relief.
C. The lack of necessary comfort. D. The decline of thinking ability.
34. Which is a real-life application of “microdosing hardship”
A. Ordering take-out food after work. B. Taking the stairs instead of the lift.
C. Writing an email using voice-to-text. D. Exploring a new city by using GPS.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Discomfort: a hidden source of resilience. B. Stress: the main cause of brain damage.
C. GPS: the invisible (隐形的) cost of convenience. D. Smartphones: barriers (障碍) to human progress.

However, sleep is just one part of self-care. ______37______ Take time out each day to exercise. It will make you happier and help you recharge (休整). You’ll notice better performance, increased focus, and less stress.

Lighten up and laugh a little
Even when you do your day-to-day activities, don’t take things too seriously — laugh a little. Laughter can deal with stress as well as exercise can. It’s another healthy escape. ______40______ For example, you can watch your favorite movies or cartoons, and read some funny books or magazines. However, when she arrived at the meeting spot, Mia didn’t show up. “Mia’s sick and won’t come,” their teacher Mrs. Lee told Lily softly. Lily’s heart sank; she clutched the pie box tightly, feeling a little lonely.
The hike started, and Lily walked behind the group, staring at her shoes. Suddenly, she heard a small whimper. She stopped and looked around—under a maple tree, a tiny puppy with matted fur was trembling. Lily knelt down gently. The puppy nuzzled her hand, and she noticed it had a hurt paw. “Poor thing,” she whispered, taking out a clean handkerchief from her bag to wrap around its paw. Just then, the group moved farther away, and Lily realized she’d gotten lost. The sun was starting to set, painting the sky orange. Lily held the puppy in one arm and the pie box in the other, feeling scared but determined not to cry.
