18. Who are the target listeners likely to be in the future
A. Translators. B. Doctors. C. Writers.
19. What advice does the speaker give to the listeners
A. Trying new topics.
B. Choosing tasks seriously.
C. Improving writing skills.
20. What does the speaker think the listeners should do
A. Believe in themselves.
B. Acquire more legal knowledge.
C. Never ignore the slightest doubt.
A 19. B 20. C
W: Today, I’m going to talk about the key things you need to remember when you go out into the world as translators. The first thing is to choose assignments carefully. It’s not wise to agree to do every job you’re offered even if you’re in need of work. You should refuse to do something if you don’t know anything about the topic, as it would be impossible for you to produce a good piece of writing. And it could be serious — a mistranslation that’s going to be used for medical or legal purposes could have bad results. If you have the slightest doubt about what something means, then consult a dictionary or someone whose mother tongue is the language you’re translating from. It’s much better to devote a bit of time and effort to checking something than to risk making a possible serious error.

In Sichuan Province, long-time resident French artist Vincent Cazeneuve, is integrating traditional Chinese lacquerware (漆器) skills with techniques taken from Western modern art into his creations.
Born in Toulouse, Vincent has been living in southwest China for more than a decade. With the influence of French artists Jean Dunand and Gaston Suisse, his journey to unravel the secrets of Chinese lacquerware and his fascination for lacquer art started. “I studied their artworks and often wondered why they used Chinese lacquer. In those days, lacquer could not be found in France,” said the artist.
Native to Asia, lacquer trees are planted and tapped for their liquid. It is almost impossible to find lacquer trees in Europe. So, instead of continually transporting lacquer back to France, Vincent chose to send himself to China.
Having explored his connections with lacquer over the years, the artist also learned a range of techniques, which he integrated into his own artworks. To dive deep into the art of lacquerware, Vincent traveled to Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture (自治州) in Sichuan Province, where lacquer craftsmanship is famous. In fact, he actually met two lacquerware craftsmen, who taught him almost everything they knew.
“I used to know about lacquerware of Yi just by looking at it. But I had never seen the Yi people before. I have never heard their language. I've never seen their villages. It's only when I came here that I felt the power of their culture,” said Vincent.
This field trip gave the artist new inspiration for his exhibition. After seeing Vincent's exhibition, Liu Guanzhong, a professor at the School of Fine Arts of Tsinghua University said, “What he presents is China in his eyes. Vincent has explored a path: the ideas of a modern artist, but rooting the ancient skills in modern life. He finds new soil for an old seed to bloom into a new flower.”
24. What does the underlined word “unravel” mean in paragraph 2
A. Ignore. B. Discover. C. Create. D. Preserve.
25. Why did Vincent come to China
A. To visit the lacquerware exhibition. B. To study Chinese traditional art.
C. To get access to lacquer more easily. D. To meet with local lacquerware craftsmen.
26. How did Vincent know about Yi lacquerware before visiting Liangshan
A. By observing Yi lacquerware visually.
B. Through artworks of Jean Dunand and Gaston Suisse.
C. By studying historical documents in France.
D. From lectures by Tsinghua University professors.
27. What would Liu Guanzhong agree with about the exhibition
A. It represented idealism. B. It featured modern art.
C. It explored the roots of art. D. It demonstrated innovation.
B 25. C 26. A 27. D

A corn plant knows how to find water in soil with the very tips of its roots, but some varieties, including many used for developing high-output corn in the U.S., appear to have lost part of that ability, according to a Stanford-led study. With climate change increasing droughts, the findings hold potential for developing more drought-resistant (抗旱的) varieties of corn.
The study, published in the journal Science, uncovers genetic-mechanisms (遗传机制) behind “hydropatterning (水力模式)”, or how plant roots branch toward water and avoid dry spaces in soil. In particular, the researchers discovered that ethylene, a plant hormone (激素) known to help bananas ripen, also influences how roots grow to seek water.
For this study, the researchers developed a new, simplified way to study water sensitivity in roots. They found corn varieties adapted to hot and wet regions like Mexico were very good at making new root branches toward water and avoiding dry areas. In contrast, the varieties adapted to moderate regions of North America frequently grew roots randomly without distinguishing between dry and wet areas in the soil.
“Interestingly, the plants that are better at sensing where the water is are also making deeper root systems,” said lead author Johannes Scharwies. “One idea is that if the plant doesn’t waste time growing root branches into places where it doesn’t find any water and nutrients, then it has more energy to grow deeper down where water is more likely.”
Genetic analyses reveal two plant hormones, auxin and ethylene, play a role in how corn roots respond to water. While auxin was already known to help control this process, ethylene’s involvement was a new discovery. In experiments with thale cress—a model plant often used in research—the researchers found auxin signaling promotes root branch development toward water, while ethylene stops branching when the root is exposed to air.
Further research is needed to better understand the interaction of these genetic pathways before corn varieties can be developed with more drought-resistant root systems, but the findings highlight the significance of studying these localized responses at root tips, researchers said.
28. What is the primary focus of the Stanford-led study
A. Drought-resistant corn varieties. B. Ethylene’s effect on fruit ripening.
C. Genetic control of root branching. D. Impact of climate change on plant roots.
29. What can be inferred from Johannes Scharwies’ remarks
A. Plant hormones make a big difference to root growth.
B. Nutrients guarantee better water-seeking root systems.
C. Root branching conserves energy for higher production.
D. Stronger hydropatterning was linked to greater root depth.
30. What can we learn about ethylene from paragraph 5
A. It has long been known to control corn roots’ response to water.
B. It works with auxin to promote root branching toward water.
C. It prevents root branching when the root comes into contact with air.
D. It is the only plant hormone affecting corn roots’ water response.
31. What does the last paragraph suggest future research do
A. Prioritize development of new corn varieties. B. Work out the mechanisms of genetic interactions.
C. Concentrate merely on localized root responses. D. Expand practical applications of hydropatterning.
C 29. D 30. C 31. B

A new study has revealed that a prehistoric sea cow was the target of two different predators (捕食动物) — an ancient crocodile and a tiger shark, providing rare insights into the complex food chains from millions of years ago. The research, conducted by an international team of scientists and published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, uncovers one of the few known instances where a single prey (猎物) was attacked by many predators.
The sea cow, belonging to the extinct group Culebratherium, was first attacked by a crocodile. Evidence then shows that after the initial attack, the sea cow’s remains were searched by a tiger shark, a tooth of which was found near the unlucky animal’s neck.
“Have you seen the Batman movie There is a scene where he and Alfred are shooting bullets to try and figure out which specific type of bullet they are trying to find, ” said Benites-Palomino, lead author of the research. “Our research was conducted in exactly the same way. We have these experiments in the wild where predators are attacking their prey, and then afterwards we try to compare which is the best scene for what we’re finding there.”
The find is particularly significant as it adds to the limited fossil record of multiple predators interacting with a single prey. Such interactions are common in today’s ecosystems, but are rarely documented in the fossil record, making this discovery an important piece of the puzzle in understanding ancient food webs.
“We have been unsure as to which animals would have served this purpose as a food source for multiple predators. Our previous research has identified sperm whales searched by several shark species, and this new research highlights the importance of sea cows within the food chain, ” Benites- Palomino said in a statement.
The digging, directed by Marcelo Sanchez- Villagra, head of the Palaeontological Institute and Museum in Zurich, Switzerland, was both challenging and rewarding. The site was initially discovered by a local farmer who spotted unusual rocks, inspiring the team to investigate further and eventually unearth the sea cow fossils.
32. What do we know about the prehistoric sea cow
A. It reached the top of food chains. B. It is thought to have complex teeth.
C. It belongs to an endangered species. D. It was attacked by two different animals.
33. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. The scene of animal fights. B. The method of the research.
C. The introduction of a movie. D. The danger of the experiments.
34. What does the importance of the study lie in
A. Challenging the current ecosystems. B. Offering insights into ancient food webs.
C. Clarifying the misunderstanding of sea cows. D. Figuring out the link between man and nature.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. The Batman Movie Inspired a Research B. A Puzzle in Complex Ancient Food Chains
C. Shark and Crocodile Ate Unlucky Sea Cow D. An Important Biological Discovery of a Farmer
D 33. B 34. B 35. C

Everyone knows that it takes 21 days to develop a new habit. We probably owe this particular example of pop-psychology wisdom to Maxwell Maltz, the plastic surgeon who claimed to have observed that individuals who had had an arm or leg cut off took an average of only 21 days to adjust to the loss of a limb (肢体). ____36____. And therefore it must take 21 days to change a habit, maybe, perhaps!
____37____, as a new study by psychologist Phillippa Lally and her colleagues helps confirm. On average, her subjects, who were trying to learn new habits such as eating fruit daily or going jogging, took a depressing 66 days before reporting that the behaviour had become unchangingly automatic. ____38____. It couldn’t be just as easy to start eating a few more apples as to start finding five hours a week to study Chinese.
Self- help culture sticks to the fiction of the 21-day rule, probably because it makes habit change sound basically easy. ____39____. Our brains are designed to take short cuts, making as many behaviours as possible automatic. “Really,” asks the psychologist Ian Newby-Clark,“ what would be the point of having a habit that didn’t free up your mind to focus on more pressing matters ” Habits are meant to be difficult to change.
Another problem is that we tend to think about habit change wrongly. We want to, say, stop watching so much TV, but on the other hand, demonstrably, we also want to watch lots of TV — after all, we keep doing it. We’re stuck deep in what the Greeks called “akrasia”: deciding on the best course of action, then doing something else. ___40___. Simply stop watching TV is like dealing with a leaky bathroom tap by repainting the kitchen. What’s required is an alternative way to feel relaxed and happy. Maybe by looking at the problem differently we can slip out of them.
A. This is, of course, nonsense
B. The 21- day rule does have some scientific basis
C. We believe that habits are purely a matter of willpower
D. The way round this is to see that habits are responses to needs
E. Therefore, he reasoned the same must be true of all big changes
F. And some habits, unsurprisingly , were harder than others to make stick
G. One problem with this is discouragingly simple: changing habits is hard
E 37. A 38. F 39. G 40. D
根据前文“We probably owe this particular example of pop- psychology wisdom to Maxwell Maltz, the plastic surgeon who claimed to have observed that individuals who had had an arm or leg cut off took an average of only 21 days to adjust to the loss of a limb (肢体). (我们可能要把这个流行心理学智慧的特别例子归功于整形外科医生Maxwell Maltz,他声称自己观察到,失去一条胳膊或一条腿的人平均只需要21天就能适应一条肢体的失去。)”可知,此处陈述了Maxwell Maltz的观点。E选项“Therefore, he reasoned the same must be true of all big changes(因此,他推断所有大的变化都是如此)”承接前文,选项中的he指代前文的Maxwell Maltz,符合语境。故选E。
根据前文“And therefore it must take 21 days to change a habit, maybe, perhaps!( 因此,改变一个习惯必须花21天,也许,也许!)”以及后文“as a new study by psychologist Phillippa Lally and her colleagues helps confirm. On average, her subjects, who were trying to learn new habits such as eating fruit daily or going jogging, took a depressing 66 days before reporting that the behaviour had become unchangingly automatic. 故选A。
根据后文“It couldn’t be just as easy to start eating a few more apples as to start finding five hours a week to study Chinese.( 开始多吃几个苹果不可能像开始每周抽出五个小时学习中文那么容易。)” F选项“And some habits, unsurprisingly , were harder than others to make stick(不出所料,有些习惯比其他习惯更难坚持)”直接指出了不同习惯养成的难易程度不同,照应后文中将吃苹果和学韩语相对比的例子。故选F。
根据前文“Self- help culture sticks to the fiction of the 21- day rule, probably because it makes habit change sound basically easy.(自助文化坚持21天规则的虚构,可能是因为它使习惯改变听起来基本上很容易。)”
根据前文“Another problem is that we tend to think about habit change wrongly. We want to, say, stop watching so much TV, but on the other hand, demonstrably, we also want to watch lots of TV —— after all, we keep doing it. We’re stuck deep in what the Greeks called “akrasia”: deciding on the best course of action, then doing something else. (另一个问题是,我们倾向于错误地思考习惯的改变。比如说,我们想停止看那么多电视,但另一方面,很明显,我们也想看很多电视——毕竟,我们一直在看电视。我们深陷希腊人所说的“akrasia”:决定最好的行动方针,然后做其他事情。)”可知,前面提到的是我们在习惯改变上的错误思维方式,即想要做某事(如少看电视),但实际上却继续做其它的事。D选项“The way round this is to see that habits are responses to needs(解决这个问题的方法是认识到习惯是对需求的反应)”针对前文的问题提出了解决方案即要理解并满足我们的真正需求,而不是简单地错误地改变某个习惯。

故填where。
所给词editor为可数名词,且空前无任何冠词或限定词,故需用复数形式editors;且空后“and they offered him a job”中的“they”指代的就是该空的“editors”。
岁时”,用短语“by the age of...”。故填by。
故填the。
故填their。
故填to advocate。
故填was established。

【答案】breathes vitality into

68. The fire, which is thought to have started from the 8th floor, spread quickly through the tower block on Sunday night, ________.
【答案】leaving people on the upper floors trapped
故填leaving people on the upper floors trapped。
69. In the future, advertising will be even more about understanding individual customers and sending them advertisements that ________ specific needs.
【答案】are tailored to

70. In addition to hosting the Olympics for the first time, China also _____________ first in the medal table.

When I was in Primary Five, I was in the basketball school team. Every month we would have a basketball match against another school’s basketball team. In spite of all the cheers we received from our classmates and the amount of training we had, we had never won a single match before. That was due to our lack of teamwork and cooperation.
During one of our training sessions, our school team was divided into two to have a match against each other. The inter-school competition was coming up and none of us wanted to miss our chance of getting that gold trophy(奖品). “Three, two, one, start!” our basketball coach, Coach Leong, shouted. John, who was in my team, managed to grab the ball that Coach Leong threw in the air. Since John grabbed the ball, he refused to let anyone, not even his teammates, take it.
“Pass the ball to me, John!” I shouted. I was in a good position to shoot the ball into the hoop(篮筺). To my shock, John made a rude face at me. I made an attempt to grab the ball from him. When I got my hands on the ball, it became a tug-of-war(激烈竞争) between John and me. Coach Leong shook his head and exploded like an active volcano. “Children! Is this the type of behavior that I should be seeing The match is in two weeks! Do you even know the importance of teamwork ” Coach Leong gave us a disappointed look. It seemed as if he had some sad news to tell us.
I was right.
Coach Leong explained that he would be retiring after the match. “I hope you can show me your teamwork and cooperate with one another in this match before I retire.” I choked on my tears. My heart sank. We were giving Coach Leong such a tough time, when all he wanted was for us to show teamwork in the match. After that day, my teammates and I were determined to do our best and work as a team.

Para. 1
On the day of the match, we stood face-to-face with our opponents, the team from River Primary School.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para. 2
John did a perfect overhead throw and I caught the ball in mid-air.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
On the day of the match, we stood face-to-face with our opponents, the team from River Primary School. Once again, Coach Leong reminded us to work as a team. The referee blew the whistle and flung the basketball into the air. I knew I had to give my team a head start, so I leaped up in the air to grab the ball. "John, catch!" I yelled at the top of my voice. John was short but he could run at lightning speed, and I think the other team assumed he was the last person I would pass the ball to. Before the opposing team could reach John, he had already shot the ball into the basketball hoop. Our team cheered with joy, and I punched the air twice with my fist.
John did a perfect overhead throw, and I caught the ball in mid-air. As the entire opposing team charged towards me, I kept my calm even though I was surrounded. I threw the ball over their heads. It flew through the air like a missile into the hands of Eric, who was standing right behind our opponents, next to the basketball hoop. Eric dunked the ball in. We won the match 5-0. Finally, we managed to work as a team and Coach Leong was very satisfied. Each of us received a trophy for our amazing efforts. As I recalled the match, I smiled as I looked at the trophy. I realized that the most important thing was not the trophy but the value of teamwork that I had learnt from that match.

D
