白牙
White Fang
一、Love And The Lair 爱与巢穴
It was winter. Snow and ice covered the land. The land was silent and empty. It was the Wild. But in these dark, cold winter forests in Northland, there was life.
The she-wolf was at the front of the pack. She was large and an unusual color for a wolf —— reddish. Next to her were two males. One was a large gray wolf who wanted the she-wolf as a mate. On her right side was another, older wolf, called One Eye. He was blind in his left eye. And he,too, wanted her as a mate.
They ran all that day, through the night, and the next day. The world was frozen and dead.Only the wolves were alive, and they were looking for other living things to eat and so continue to live.
Finally, they found a big moose. They were so hungry that the whole pack attacked him. He fought hard, kicking and hitting the wolves with his large antlers. But there were too many wolves for him and in the end they killed him and ate him immediately. There was meat for each wolf. Soon the pack started to break up.One Eye and the she-wolf became friendly and they ran side by side, hunting and eating together.
Soon the she-wolf felt she needed to find a small cave. She found one near a stream. It was dry and warm. She looked around carefully, and she decided that this was the right place. This was her lair. She lay down. One Eye came to see where she was, and he lay down outside the cave.
It was April. Spring was coming. Water was starting to run in the stream, birds were singing and One Eye left the cave to explore.
Later inside the cave he heard small noises and saw there were five wolf cubs lying beside the she-wolf. She snarled at him, and he moved back. He knew now that he must hunt for food.
When he came back he gave some meat to his mate. The she-wolf turned and licked his neck, to show him she was pleased. She did not snarl or show her teeth. She understood he was being a good wolf-father and that he didn't want to eat her five cubs.
He was different to his brothers and sisters. They already had the reddish color of their mother's fur. But he was gray, like his father.
At first, his life was one of drinking milk, resting with his mother and playing with his brothers and sisters. But then came hard times when the cub was hungry.
One Eye found it more and more difficult to find food. The cub's brothers and sisters died of hunger. Then One Eye didn't come back to the lair.
The she-wolf knew that something was wrong. She went out hunting and she found One Eye's body. She knew that a lynx killed him. The lynx had kittens of her own, and was a dangerous animal. After that, the she-wolf didn't hunt in that part of the forest.
One day, while his mother was out hunting, the gray cub found the way out of the cave.At first, it was too bright after the half-dark of the cave. But slowly he learned to focus on the trees, the other bank of the stream and the sky.
He was afraid. But the need to know and understand was greater than his fear;so he went out.
He soon discovered that the floor of the world was not flat like the floor of the cave. And he fell, rolling down the slope outside the lair. He lay at the bottom yelping in fear.
But he soon sat up, and he started walking and looking around him. He met a squirrel, and a wood pecker, both of which moved away from him.
And so he learned that the world had things that stayed in one place, and other things that moved. And the more he walked, the better he walked.
He had beginner's luck when he fell into a ptarmigan's nest. In the nest were seven chicks. He realized this was meat, like his mother gave him. So he ate them all.
As he walked away from the nest, the mother ptarmigan attacked him. He fought back, biting her wing with his small teeth, while she pecked him. He was excited and happy. He pulled the bird out into the open. He was fighting for meat, fighting to kill. It was what wolves did.
Then he left the ptarmigan free and rested. As he watched her, something rushed down from above him, picked up the ptarmigan and flew back up into the sky. It was a hawk.
He was learning. Live things were meat, but if they were big enough, live things could also hurt. It was better to eat small live things.
Later something small and long jumped in front of him. It was a small live thing, so he put his paw on it. It was a young weasel. It made strange noises, and a larger longer animal appeared. It jumped at his neck and bit him with sharp teeth. It was the mother weasel. She wasn't big, but he didn't know how dangerous weasels were.
The mother weasel took her baby back to her nest, but soon she returned. The cub watched as she came closer. Suddenly she jumped, and bit into his throat. He snarled and tried to fight, but the weasel held on.
The cub was sure to die, but luckily his mother, the she- wolf, heard his frightened calls. She came rushing through the bushes to save him. The weasel let go. Then the she-wolf took the weasel in her mouth and threw It up into the air, catching it in her teeth and killing it. The cub and mother licked each other happily, then they ate the weasel and went back to the cave and slept.
三、The Law of Meat食 肉 法 则
Soon the cub went out again. Every day he went further and further away from the cave. He didn't get lost. But a time of hunger returned. Neither he nor his mother found food. Then finally his mother brought home some strange meat, different from other meat. It was a lynx kitten.
Later the cub lay sleeping by his mother's side when there was a terrible snarl. There in the entrance was the mother lynx. A terrible fight followed. The lynx cut with her claws and teeth, the she-wolf with her teeth. The cub joined in, biting the lynx's back leg, which helped his mother. The fight continued, and he bit her back leg again.
At last the lynx was dead. But the she-wolf was very weak. She lay by the dead animal's side for a day and a night without moving. For a week she didn't leave the cave, except to go down to the stream for water. They ate the lynx each day and soon their wounds healed.
The gray cub went out for food with his mother now. He learned how she killed animals, and he started to help her. And he learned the law of meat. There were two kinds of life: his own kind, which was himself and his mother, and the other kind. The other kind were non-killers and small killers, which his kind could eat. But his kind also had large killers, which could kill and eat him. The law was:EAT, OR BE EATEN.
He saw the law working all around him. He ate the ptarmigan chicks. The hawk ate the ptarmigan mother. The hawk wanted to eat him. He ate the lynx kitten. The lynx mother wanted to eat him, but he and his mother ate her first. And so it went on. He was a killer and his only food was meat.
四、The Makers of Fire造火诸神
The cub ran down to the stream to drink. Suddenly, he stopped. There was a strange smell, and he saw something new. Five live things were sitting round something bright. It was the first time he saw men. He felt weak while they were powerful.
One of the Indians went over to him, and bent down. Automatically he showed his teeth. The man laughed, saying:“Look at these white fangs!”His friends laughed. The man bent to pick him up. As the man's hand came closer, the cub didn't know what to do. Part of him wanted the man to touch him, another part wanted to fight. He waited until the hand almost touched him, then he bit it.Then the man hit his head, and knocked him onto his side.
The other men came and made a circle around the cub. But then they heard the she-wolf. She was running towards them and she was snarling. The cub ran towards her, while the Indians moved away. She stood over her cub, facing the men. She was still snarling.
Then one of the men said:“Kiche!” and the cub saw his mother change.“Kiche!”shouted the man, and she lay down on the ground. She made a small sound and wagged her tail. The cub didn't understand. He again felt the power of men. He knew that his mother felt this power, too.The man came to her and put his hand on her head. She did not bite or snarl. The other men came and stood around her. They were very excited.
“Her father was a wolf," the Indian said. "But her mother was a dog.”
“It is a year, Gray Beaver, since she ran away,” said a second Indian.
“It was a hard time,” replied Gray Beaver. “There was no meat for the dogs.”
“She has lived with the wolves,” said a third Indian.
“So it seems, Three Eagles,” Gray Beaver answered, laying his hand on the cub,“and this cub is the result.”
The cub snarled a little at the touch of the hand. They hit him again and he lay down next to his mother. The hand came back and rubbed behind his ears and up and down his back. He liked this.
“His mother is Kiche,”said Gray Beaver, “but his father is a wolf. So there is a little dog in him and a lot of wolf. His fangs are white, so his name will be White Fang. And he is mine, because Kiche was my brother's dog, and my brother is dead.”
Gray Beaver then tied up Kiche, and White Fang lay down beside her. Soon the rest of the Indians arrived — men, women and children — with their equipment and many dogs. The adult dogs were carrying things on their backs.
White Fang didn't know this species, but he knew they were not his kind. The dogs rushed at the cub and his mother, and there was soon a great fight. The men separated them, hitting the dogs with clubs. White Fang again felt the power of men. They were the makers of law.
The men then took his mother by the rope and led her. He didn't like this;it was like a trap. He followed them. They went down to the Mackenzie River, and made a camp. White Fang was amazed by what he saw the men do. They were the masters of things not alive. Their teepees were especially strange and big to him.
White Fang explored the camp. He met a puppy, who was older than him, called Lip-lip.White Fang wanted to be friendly, but Lip-lip suddenly attacked him. They became enemies. White Fang's mother wanted him to stay with her, but White Fang was curious and soon he was exploring again.
Gray Beaver was doing something important with two sticks and some grass. Women and children carried sticks and branches to him. White Fang saw something like mist coming from the sticks and moss, and then, something bright like the sun appeared, and grew.
White Fang went towards this bright thing with his nose, and touched it with his tongue. Then he jumped into the air, yelping. Gray Beaver laughed, and told everybody, so they all started laughing, too. Kiche started snarling loudly, but she could not get to her cub because of the rope. Poor White Fang sat there crying in the middle of the laughing men. Their laughter hurt him more than the pain.
He went back to his mother and lay down beside her. As night came on he felt sad.He wanted the quiet of the woods and the cave. Here, there were so many people making noise, and all the dogs. The men were always doing something, using their power. They were fire-makers! They were gods!
White Fang soon learned about men.He learned to get out of their way and to come when they called. The alternative was a club on his back or a stone in his face. Some days White Fang went to the edge of the forest. He stood and listened to something calling him from far away.
He learned about the other dogs, too. He learned that some dogs ate lots and some were dangerous. But the biggest problem in White Fang's life was Lip-lip. He was larger, older and stronger and he hated White Fang. Lip-lip attacked him whenever he could. White Fang learned to avoid him and the other puppies. He didn't play but he learned everything about the camp instead. And he became a clever thief because it was difficult for him to get his share of the food.
Then one day White Fang had his first taste of revenge. Lip-lip was chasing him and White Fang ran closer and closer to where his mother was tied up. Lip-lip followed.White Fang knew his mother hated Lip-lip, too. Soon Lip-lip was so excited that he ran right into Kiche. She bit him with her fangs. He was able to escape because Kiche was still tied up. But then White Fang bit and chased him. For the first time, with the help of his mother, White Fang managed to hurt Lip-lip. Revenge was good.
After this episode, Gray Beaver decided to untie Kiche so she could walk freely. White Fang now enjoyed walking around the camp with his mother. Later, White Fang led her to the edge of the camp, and tried to make her follow him into the Wild. But the call of the fire and the men was too strong, and Kiche turned and walked back to the camp. White Fang sat in the trees and cried. But White Fang was still only a puppy and the call of his mother was stronger than the call of the Wild. So he got up and walked back to the camp, too.
Soon, however, White Fang suffered again. Gray Beaver was in debt to Three Eagles. Three Eagles was leaving the camp for a trip up the Mackenzie River to the Great Slave Lake. Before Three Eagles left,Gray Beaver paid his debt with some red cloth, twenty cartridges and Kiche. White Fang saw his mother in Three Eagle's canoe, and he tried to follow her. He jumped into the river and swam after the canoe. Gray Beaver called White Fang to come back, but White Fang continued swimming. So Gray Beaver chased him in his canoe.
Gray Beaver soon caught White Fang, pulled him out of the water, and beat him hard and long. Then he threw him in the bottom of the canoe. But White Fang was angry, and he bit Gray Beaver's foot. Gray Beaver was even more angry and beat White Fang again and again with great fury. White Fang was terrified. He learned another lesson: a dog must never bite his master. When they got to the shore, Gray Beaver threw the crying cub onto the land. Lip-lip, who was watching the whole scene, ran to White Fang, knocked him over and bit him hard. White Fang was too weak to defend himself. But Gray Beaver pulled Lip-lip away from White Fang, hurting him badly. White Fang then followed Gray Beaver quietly to his teepee. He learned of man-animal justice but also that the right to punish was reserved only for man.
White Fang was sad. He remembered his mother and waited for her night and day. He also learned to get along with Gray Beaver and, over time, a bond grew between the dog and his master.
Lip-lip continued to make White Fang unhappy. Gradually White Fang became more and more savage in order to defend himself. Soon he got a reputation in the camp for being wicked. When there was trouble everyone blamed White Fang.
Soon White Fang became an outcast. The other dogs were on Lip-lip's side, and White Fang found himself constantly fighting. This situation taught him two important things: how to take care of himself in a fight against a lot of dogs, and how to do the most damage in the shortest time in a fight against one dog.
When he was fighting he learned to keep his feet like a cat, to be quick, and to surprise his enemy. Then one day he eventually killed another dog, and so the tooth of every dog and hand of every man was against him.
All of this helped White Fang to grow up fast. His need to survive meant that he ran faster, moved quicker, was craftier, deadlier, more cruel, more savage and more intelligent than all the other dogs in the camp. He had no idea of kindness because he never felt it himself. He obeyed Gray Beaver because he was strong, but he attacked the weak.
Later that year, in the autumn, the Indians took down their teepees and got ready to go hunting. White Fang decided not to go with them. He went into the woods, running along a stream to hide his trail. Then he went into the middle of a thick group of trees and waited. After a time, he heard Gray Beaver's voice calling him, and the voices of his wife and Mit- sah,his son.
During the night White Fang started to feel lonely. He missed the camp and its noise. The silence of the Wild was new to him again. It was cold, there was no food, and he began to feel frightened. In the morning he felt less frightened, but more lonely. He started to follow the river bank. He went through mountains, over rocks, in the river itself. He ran on, though he was tired and hungry. After thirty hours he was still running. Then White Fang suddenly found a fresh trail, and he knew what it was. He followed it and camp sounds came to his ears. He saw a fire, and Kloo-kooch, Gray Beaver's wife, was cooking. Gray Beaver was sitting by the fire.
White Fang expected a beating. He crawled slowly closer until he lay at Gray Beaver's feet. He waited for the hand to hit him. But Gray Beaver cut some meat for him. Then he guarded White Fang from the other dogs while he ate it. After that, grateful and happy, he lay at Gray Beaver's feet, looking at the fire that warmed him.White Fang was no longer alone in the silent forests, but in the camp, with his gods. He was now theirs and he depended on them.
About halfway through December, Gray Beaver went on a journey up the Mackenzie River to the Great Slave Lake. Mit-sah and Kloo-kooch went with him. Gray Beaver took two sleds. He drove one sled himself and his son,Mit-sah drove the other one.
Mit-sah was learning how to drive a sled, so his sled was small and it was pulled by seven puppies. But it also carried equipment and food, and so was useful.
White Fang was tied to Mit-sah's sled;he accepted it well. The lead dog was Lip-lip. Mit-sah didn't like Lip-lip, especially for how he treated White Fang. He put Lip-lip in front as a punishment, as it seemed that the other six dogs were chasing him.
White Fang worked hard. He was obedient, faithful and willing. He was solitary. He either fought with the other puppies or ignored them. But they respected him.
At the Great Slave Lake, White Fang changed his idea that it was wrong to bite a man. In the village a boy was chopping frozen moose-meat with an axe, and pieces fell onto the ground. White Fang stopped and ate the pieces. But the boy picked up a club and chased him. Suddenly, White Fang felt angry, for he had done nothing wrong, and yet this boy wanted to beat him.
White Fang knocked the boy down onto the snow and bit the hand that held the club. The boy's hand was bleeding badly.
When he bit the boy White Fang broke the law of the gods. He knew this and now he waited for a terrible punishment. But when the boy and his family came to complain, Gray Beaver defended White Fang. And so he learned that there were his gods and other gods, and there was difference between them. He did not have to take injustice from other gods.
Later, White Fang was walking in a wood where Mit-sah was collecting firewood alone. The boy with the club and some other boys started arguing with Mit-sah, then they attacked him. White Fang suddenly felt angry. They were mistreating one of his own gods. He jumped at the boys, and five minutes later they were running away, many of them bleeding. When Mit-sah told Gray Beaver the story, he ordered lots of meat for White Fang.
White Fang also learned to protect Gray Beaver's property from thieves. It was part of the agreement between the man and the wolf. The man gave him food, fire, protection and friendship, and he guarded the man's property, defended his body, worked for him and obeyed him. White Fang's was a service of duty and awe, but not of love. He had no experience of love.
In April Gray Beaver went back home with his family. White Fang was one year old now and he looked more like a wolf than a dog. He didn't feel frightened of the grown dogs any more.
White Fang was eating some cut-up moose when an old dog called Baseek, ran at him, wanting to take the meat. Before White Fang always feared Baseek. But this time White Fang cut him twice, to Baseek's surprise. They stood looking at each other over them eat, then Baseek stepped forward to take it. But White Fang struck, as usual, with no warning. First, he cut Baseek's right ear, then he knocked him down and bit his shoulder. Baseek ran at White Fang, but White Fang was too quick for the old dog, and cut his nose. White Fang stood over the meat, and Baseek left. This gave White Fang even more confidence in himself, and from then on none of the other dogs challenged him
Then White Fang had another important experience. One day, in the village, he met his mother Kiche. He remembered her, but she-wolves do not remember their old cubs. He was just another dangerous animal, who might hurt her new cubs. So when White Fang ran over to her happily, she cut his cheek. He didn't understand, and he moved away. He had learned to live without her, and he understood that there was no place for her in his life, just as there was no place for him in hers.
In the third year of his life there was a great famine. In summer there were no fish. In winter the caribou didn't pass that way. There were few moose, and the rabbits almost disappeared. Many older and weaker Indians died, too. Both men and dogs were forced to eat leather. Then the Indians ate the dogs and the dogs ate each other.
White Fang left the camp and started hunting small animals in the forests: squirrels, wood mice and weasels. One day, White Fang met a young wolf that was thin and hungry.White Fang didn't go with the wolf and join the wolf's pack. White Fang was so hungry that he killed and ate the young wolf.
Once he was attacked by the wolf pack, but he was full of energy from two days of eating a lynx and the weak wolves could not catch him. He even ran in a big circle, and killed and ate one of the weakest wolves at the back of the pack.
He left that part of the country and went over to the valley where he was born. In the lair,he met Kiche with the last of her latest cubs, who was weak and hungry. But White Fang didn't stay. He didn't need his mother any more. In the last days of the famine, he met Lip-lip. White Fang was in very good condition because he was hunting well. His old feelings about Lip-lip came back, and he attacked him quickly, and left him dead on the track.
One day, soon after that, White Fang came to the edge of the forest, where the land went down to the Mackenzie River. There was a village there. From the trees he heard well-known sounds and saw familiar sights. Now the village was happy - the famine was over. He walked into the camp and straight to Gray Beaver's teepee. Kloo-kooch was delighted to see him and gave him a whole fresh fish to eat. Then he lay down to wait for Gray Beaver to return.
The Enemy of His Kind同类之敌
Mit-sah made White Fang the leader of the sled- team. All the other dogs hated him getting extra meat and seeing him running in front of them. White Fang hated them, too. In camp, the other dogs got together to attack him continually. They didn't dare fight him alone, because he always won. And so he became the enemy of his kind.
In summer, White Fang arrived at Fort Yukon. Gray Beaver crossed from the Mackenzie to the Yukon in late winter, and spent the spring hunting in the Rockies. It was the summer of 1898, and thousands of gold-hunters were going up the Yukon to Dawson and the Klondike. Gray Beaver came with furs mittens and moccasins. He made an enormous profit.
There White Fang saw his first white men. They seemed like superior gods to him. They built a huge wooden fort and houses, and seemed more powerful than the Indians with their tee pees. But he realized that very few of these white men stayed. They came off the boats, stopped for a few hours, then travelled on again.
He looked with interest at the different kinds of dogs that the white men brought with them.He learned that he could kill them easily. He attacked the dogs, knocked them over, and bit their throats. Then the other Indian dogs finished the job. In this way he was never beaten by the angry owners. This was how he spent his time. He and the other dogs waited for each boat, killed two or three dogs, then they hid until the next boat arrived.
The few men who lived in Fort Yukon didn't like the newcomers. They liked watching White Fang and the Indian dogs, and they always appreciated the part played by White Fang.
Beauty Smith go this name because he was the opposite of a beauty. He was the cook for the other men. Beauty liked White Fang and he wanted to own him. He tried to make friends with him, but the dog just ignored him, and snarled at him and showed his teeth.
Beauty Smith visited Gray Beaver, and the two men talked, but Gray Beaver refused to sell the dog. He was rich and he didn't need anything. Besides, White Fang was a valuable animal, a strong sled-dog and the best leader. And he killed other dogs like men killed mosquitoes.
Each time Beauty came, he brought Gray Beaver some whisky, and soon Gray Beaver wanted more. His money disappeared quickly but he still wanted more whisky. And so when Beauty Smith came next time, they discussed a price for the sale of White Fang. This time it was in bottles of whisky, not dollars. Gray Beaver agreed, but he said that Beauty had to catch the dog. The bottles were delivered, but after two days, Beauty came back and asked Gray Beaver to catch White Fang.
White Fang hid from Beauty. But he came back to Gray Beaver. The Indian tied a leather rope around White Fang's neck and sat down, holding the end of it. An hour later, Beauty arrived, and Gray Beaver gave the rope to him. As Beauty walked away, White Fang ran at him. Beauty expected this, and he turned and hit White Fang with a club. After that,White Fang followed him. He was too clever to attack and be clubbed again.
At the fort, Beauty Smith tied White Fang up and went to bed.The dog waited for an hour, and cut through the rope in ten seconds with his teeth. Then he walked back to Gray Beaver's camp. He didn't have to obey that strange and terrible god. His master was Gray Beaver, and he still belonged to him.
But what happened was repeated. Gray Beaver tied him up with a leather rope, and in the morning he gave him back to Beauty. The difference was that Beauty then beat White Fang with a club and a whip. He enjoyed beating him, because he was cruel. After the beating, Beauty dragged White Fang back to the fort and tied him to a stick.
It was more difficult to bite through the stick, but during the night White Fang succeeded, and he went back to Gray Beaver's camp. And the same thing happened for the third time, only this time he was beaten even harder. With difficulty and in great pain, he followed Beauty back to the fort. There he was tied up with a chain which he could not bite through.
A few days later, Gray Beaver left, with no money, on his long journey to the Mackenzie. White Fang stayed in Yukon, with his mad and cruel master. But White Fang knew nothing of madness. He knew only that he must obey this new master in everything.
十、The Reign of Hate恨之入骨
Beauty kept White Fang chained in a pen at the back of the fort. There he teased White Fang, until the dog became enraged. He became the enemy of everything, and he was more ferocious than ever.
But Beauty Smith had a purpose. One day, some men gathered around the pen. Beauty entered, club in hand, and took the chain off White Fang's neck. Then a huge mastiff was put inside, and the door was shut. This was a big, fierce-looking dog, but White Fang didn't waste any time. He jumped in and attacked the dog, cutting and biting it everywhere. The mastiff was too slow, and in the end Beauty beat White Fang back with his club, while the owner pulled the mastiff out. Then there was the payment of bets, and there was money in Beauty's hand. White Fang started to look forward to the fights. He wanted to show the life that was in him.
That autumn, Beauty took White Fang up the Yukon River to Dawson.White Fang was well-known everywhere now as "the fighting wolf", and he was kept in a cage. In Dawson, men paid fifty cents in gold dust to see him.
Sometimes, Beauty took White Fang into the woods to fight. He fought all sizes and breeds of dog. The fights were to the death, and he always won. His greatest advantage was experience. He knew more about fighting than any other dog.
As time went by, men knew no dogs could beat him, and Beauty made him fight wolves. A fight between White Fang and a wolf always attracted a crowd. Once he fought a full-grown female lynx. But after the lynx, there were no more fights for White Fang until Tim Keenan arrived, bringing the first bulldog ever to the Klondike. And for a week all people talked about was the fight between White Fang and the bull dog.
When Beauty Smith took off White Fang's chain, he did not make an immediate attack. A bull dog was new for him. This dog was short, squat and awkward. The bull dog also didn't attack. He didn't know how to fight dogs like White Fang.
Tim Keenan encouraged his dog to attack. Slowly it went towards White Fang, who suddenly struck, cutting the bull dog's neck. Again and again, White Fang jumped in, cut the dog and jumped out, and still the little dog walked around following him, slowly and deliberately. Each dog was puzzled by the other. White Fang never kept still enough for the bull dog to bite, and the bulldog made no reaction to White Fang's cuts.
White Fang tried to knock the bulldog off his feet again and again. But the bulldog was too close to the ground and White Fang lost his balance and fell over the smaller dog. White Fang was off his feet for the first time in his dog-fighting history. He landed on his side, and stood up quickly, but at that moment, the bull dog's teeth closed on his throat. He didn't have a good grip. It was too low down on White Fang's chest but the bulldog held on.
White Fang ran round and round trying to shake off the dog.Soon he was tired, and lay down, with the bulldog still holding on. Slowly the life was going out of White Fang, as the bulldog's hold on his neck stopped him breathing.
And the bull dog was ready to win, until two men arrived on a sled. They stopped their sled to see what was happening, quickly pushing their way through the men into the ring.“Beasts!”shouted one of them at the crowd.
The two men tried to separate the dogs, but it was a difficult job. In the end, the one called Scott pushed the barrel of his gun between the bulldog's teeth and started to open them, gently and carefully. Finally they separated the two dogs. Scott gave the bulldog to Tim Keenan, saying:“Take him away!”
White Fang tried to get up,but he was too weak.
“He's exhausted,”said the other man, who was called Matt,“But he's breathing.”
“Matt, how much does a good sled-dog cost ”asked Scott.
“Three hundred dollars,”he answered.
“And what about one in this condition ”
“Half of that,”replied Matt.
Scott turned to Beauty Smith.“Did you hear that, Mr Beast ”he asked. “I'm going to take your dog from you, and give you one hundred and fifty dollars for him.”“I'm not selling,”said Beauty Smith. “The dog's mine, and a man's got his rights.”
“Correct,”said Scott, passing the money to Beauty.“A man's got his rights. But you're not a man;you're a beast.”
“It's hopeless,” said Scott.
He sat on the step of his cabin and looked at White Fang pulling at his chain, snarling and ferocious.
“It's a wolf, and we can't tame it,” said Scott. “Someone has tamed him,” replied Matt. “Look at those marks on his chest.”
“You're right! He was a sled-dog before Beauty Smith had him.”
“Give him a chance,” suggested Matt. “Untie him and leave him free.”
Matt picked up a club and went over to White Fang. He opened the chain round White Fang's neck. The dog couldn't believe he was free.
“Poor thing,” said Scott. “He needs human kindness.”
Scott went into the cabin and returned with some meat. He threw it to White Fang. Immediately one of the other sled-dogs ran to the meat, but White Fang struck him, knocked him down and bit his throat. Matt ran in and started to kick White Fang, but again the dog struck, and this time it was Matt's leg that was bleeding.
“I told you it was hopeless,” said Scott, taking out his gun and checking the bullets in it.
“Look, Scott,” Matt said, “that dog's had a terrible time. You can't expect him to be normal again immediately. Give him some time.”
White Fang watched Scott approach him, and snarled. He had hurt a superior white god. He was waiting for his punishment.
But Scott sat down a few meters away and talked to White Fang in a calm, gentle way. And somewhere, it touched the dog. He began to have confidence in this god. Scott got up and went back into the cabin. He came out with a small piece of meat. He offered it to White Fang, but the dog was suspicious. In the end he threw the meat at White Fang's feet.
Scott repeated this several times, offering the meat, then throwing it to White Fang. Meanwhile, the god was talking, with kindness in his voice-something White Fang did not know. Then Scott went closer, and slowly put his hand on the dog's head, talking all the time. White Fang snarled, and prepared to attack when the beating came.
But the hand on his head didn't hit White Fang. Scott patted and caressed White Fang. The dog had two feelings at the same time — his old dislike of men's hands, and the pleasant physical feelings of a caress. It was the beginning of a new life for White Fang, and the end of the reign of hate.
But love did not come in a day. At first White Fang liked his new master, and did things for him, like guard his property at night. But as the days passed, with petting and caressing and gentle talk, like started to change into love.
In late spring trouble came to White Fang without warning. His love-master disappeared. The days passed. White Fang became so sick that Matt took him inside the cabin, where he lay by the stove and did nothing. And when he wrote to his employer, Matt wrote:
“That wolf doesn't work and doesn't eat. He has no energy in him. He wants to know where you are, and l don't know how to tell him. Perhaps he's going to die.”
Then one night, the door opened and Scott walked in. The two men shook hands, and Scott looked round the room.
“Where's the wolf?”he asked.
Then he saw White Fang and walked across the room, calling to him. White Fang went to him, quickly. Scott knelt down and petted him.White Fang was so happy that he moved his head between Scott's arm and body, rubbing against him.
The two men looked at each other. Scott's eyes were shining.
One night, the two men were playing cards, when they heard snarling and a scream outside.
“The wolf's got somebody,”Matt said.
They ran outside. White Fang was attacking a man who was trying to protect his throat, with blood running down both arms. Scott pulled White Fang away, and Matt helped the man to his feet. They saw that it was Beauty Smith. Then they noticed that on the ground there was a large club and a steel chain.
“Tried to steal you, did he ” said Scott to White Fang, patting his head. “And you didn't want to go! Well, he made a mistake, didn't he?”
十二、The Long Trail出趟远门
White Fang sensed something terrible. He was whining softly outside the cabin.
“I think he knows,” said Matt. “What can I do with a wolf in California ” asked Scott.
Then White Fang saw his love-master packing his things into a bag. His god was going away again, and, like last time, he wasn't taking White Fang with him. That night he howled the long wolf-howl, pointing his nose to the stars and telling them of his sadness.
The next day Scott called White Fang into the cabin.“You poor thing,”he said, rubbing his ears. “I'm starting the long trail, where you cannot follow. Now give me a last goodbye growl.”
But White Fang didn't growl. He put his head between his master's arm and body. Then, at that moment from the Yukon River, the boat's whistle sounded.“You need to go now,”said Matt.
The two men locked the doors and went outside. From inside they could hear White Fang whining and crying.“Take good care of him,Matt,”said Scott. White Fang was howling like dogs do when their master is dead.
Down by the river, everything was busy. The two men stood shaking hands, but Matt's hand suddenly dropped as he looked past his employer. Scott turned around. Sitting on the deck a few meters away was White Fang.
The ship's whistle hooted again to announce the departure. People ran down onto the bank. Matt went to get White Fang. He wanted to use his scarf as a lead.
“Goodbye, Matt,”said Scott. “And about the wolf, don't write about him. I'll write to you!”
“You don't mean... ”started Matt. “The climate in California will be difficult for a wolf.”
The ship moved out into the river. Scott waved a last goodbye. Then he turned and bent over White Fang.“Now growl, will you, growl!”he said, as he patted the dog's head.
White Fang landed in San Francisco. Here the white men really seemed like powerful gods. There were towering buildings, automobiles and electric trams. It was amazing and frightening He felt even more dependent on his love-master.
They got a train and White Fang found himself outside the city in wonderful, sunny countryside.A carriage was waiting and a man and woman walked towards them. White Fang growled when Scott's mother embraced him, but Scott calmed him and they drove off in the carriage to a large house.
As soon as they arrived, White Fang was attacked by a sheep-dog called Collie, and a deer hound called Dick. White Fang attacked Dick and nearly killed him but he didn't attack Collie because she was female, and that was the rule.
All White Fang wanted was to be left alone. Dick soon agreed to this, and they no longer took any interest in each other. However, Collie remembered wolves stealing sheep, and she couldn't accept him. She regularly attacked him, but he never once hurt her because she was female.
Next White Fang learned about his master's family. He learned who was most important to Scott. He was soon able to tolerate, then even like his master's children. However, he never saw the other members of the family as anything but possessions of his master.
He learned about the other animals that were around the house, too. In the North land, where he came from, all small animals were food for any dog that was hungry. So, when he found a nice fat chicken here in California, he killed it and ate it as he did in the North land. Later the same day,he found another, and one of the grooms ran to save it, with a whip in his hand. He hit White Fang with it, and the dog cut his arm to the bone. The groom was only saved by Collie running at White Fang in anger.
The next day, the groom showed Scott fifty dead chickens in the chicken yard. Scott talked harshly to White Fang who understood his anger. Then Scott held White Fang's nose next to a dead chicken and hit him quite hard. His master later took him into the chicken yard, and they walked up and down together. Every time he went towards a chicken, his master's voice stopped him. In this way he learned not to kill chickens.
He also learned that he should not touch cats, turkeys and domesticated rabbits, but that it was fine to kill wild rabbits, quail and squirrels.
When he went into San Jose with his master, there were many rules. There were butcher's shops where the meat hung in easy reach, but he must not touch it. There were cats at the houses the master visited that he had to leave alone. There were dogs everywhere that snarled at him and he could not attack them. And there were little b
