Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea, set in the Gulf Stream off the coast of Havana,is a powerful and simple story about an old fisherman's battle with a giant marlin(马林鱼).This short novel directly led to him winning the Nobel Prize for Literature. It presents the human struggle against the powerful forces of nature.
The plot centers on Santiago, an aging Cuban fisherman. His struggle to catch the marlin represents Hemingway's favorite themes: facing physical and moral challenges with dignity. Unlike the violent manliness in some of Hemingway's other works, Santiago's heroism is defined by his patience, skill, and remarkable perseverance. Through this character, Hemingway explores the concept of grace (优雅)under pressure, demonstrating how one can maintain honor even in the face of extreme misfortune.
Hemingway's writing style is clear and vivid. He uses precise, descriptive language to bring the sea and the struggle to life. For example, as a storm approaches, he writes that "the rising wind roughened the surface of the sea and the waves were talking to each other." Such imagery allows readers to fully imagine the scene and appreciate the author's masterful command of language, transforming an ordinary fishing trip into a deep universal experience.
The story's ending is deeply meaningful. After Santiago finally defeats the marlin, his prize is eaten by sharks on his way home. He returns to port with only the skeleton(骨骼)of the fish. This is not a story of pure victory, but one of dignified loss that conveys a significant message about life. The final line-"The old man was dreaming about the lions"-suggests that true honor lies not in the reward.but in the spirit of the struggle itself.
This masterpiece remains the last great achievement of Hemingway's brilliant career, continuing to inspire readers worldwide with its deep insight. For any student seeking to understand courage and dignity, this book is essential reading.

Over six decades, Tanzanian acrobatics(杂技)has developed into a remarkable art form through sustained cultural exchange with China. This practice has become a vital cultural bridge, representing how international cooperation promotes lasting friendship and shared understanding between nations.
The story began in the 1960s, when a Chinese acrobatic group's performance in Tanzania deeply impressed the local art community and audiences-a key moment that inspired a landmark training program. In 1965,twenty Tanzanian students, including Hamis Adam Nyota, traveled to Wuhan,China.for professional acrobatic training. Though they initially faced challenges adapting to the new environment, the group trained diligently. After four years of devoted practice, they mastered complex skills and returned home in 1969 to establish Africa's first national acrobatic group. Their perseverance laid the foundation for an lasting artistic tradition that would shape generations.
Through subsequent decades, acrobatics took root in Tanzanian society. Saidi Ramadhani Yusuph,a second-generation acrobat, has made vital contributions to carrying forward this acrobatic heritage.Since starting his teaching career, Yusuph has trained a large number of students, focusing not only on building physical strength and flexibiliy but also on developing mental discipline and teamwork. What was once seen as mere entertainment has now transformed into a respected profession: it offers health benefits, and performers can earn a stable income through shows at hotels, weddings, and international events.
Now, it is easy to see that the art is getting more and more recognition around the world. One example of this success is the Ramadhani Brothers, who gained praise on the U.S. television show America's Got Talent. These achievements bring pride to Tanzania while motivating younger artists to pursue excellence.
From Wuhan to Tanzania, this meaningful cultural exchange continues to inspire new generations.Nine-year-old Aisha Juma, a young trainee, talks about what acrobatics means to her: "Through my daily hula hoop(呼啦圈)drills and acrobatic practice, I not only get stronger and sharper in mind, but also keep this tradition going."
28.What started China-Tanzania acrobatic exchange

Artificial intelligence consumes huge amounts of energy, but researchers at the University of Florida have developed a chip that could transform this situation. Instead of relying on electricity.it uses light to perform a core AI function.By creating tiny lenses(透镜)directly on silicon chips(硅芯片),they have achieved optical(光学的)computing that reduces power consumption while maintaining accuracy.
Al systems play a central role in modern technology, supporting everything from facial recognition to language translation. However, as these systems become more advanced, their electricity use grows dramatically. The new chip from the University of Florida addresses this problem by using light to handle one of AI's most energy-consuming tasks. The findings have been published in the journal Advanced Photonics.
The chip specializes in convolution operations, a core function in machine learning that enables AI systems to detect patterns in images, video, and text. Such tasks usually require a huge amount of computing resources. By integrating optical elements directly into a silicon chip, the research team has built a system that uses light and micro-lenses to run convolutions. This approach cuts energy use and speeds up processing.
To perform a key computation, machine learning data is first transformed into light on the chip.
The light passes through the lenses, which carry out the mathematical transformation. The result is then translated back into a digital signal to complete the Al task.
"Carrying out a key machine learning operation with almost no energy is a major step forward for Al systems,"said lead researcher Volker J. Sorger. "This is essential if we want to continue expanding what Al can do."
The study was carried out in partnership with the Florida Semiconductor Institute, UCLA, and George Washington University. Sorger pointed out that chip producers already include optical elements in certain parts of Al systems, which could help bring this technology into real-world use."In the near future, optics integrated into chips will become a standard feature in the Al chips we use every day."Sorger said.
32.How is the topic introduced in the first paragraph
A.By quoting leading experts' opinions.
B.By explaining a complex scientific principle.
C. By stating a problem and presenting a solution.
D.By comparing a new technology's pros and cons.
33.What does the underlined word "convolution operations" in paragraph 3 mean
A.A technique for speeding up data delivery.
B. A system designed to make images clearer.
C.A basic process that allows AI to identify patterns.
D. A method for reducing energy consumption in chips.
34.What is the main idea of paragraph 4
A.Why light is used in the new Al chip.
B.How a computation is performed on the new chip.
C.What mathematical operations the lenses perform.
D.How digital signals are transformed into laser light.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Al Drives Development of New Chips
B. Researchers Develop a New Type of Chip
C.Optical Chips Boost Al's Energy Efficiency
D.Optical Computing Reshapes AI's Future

Ethan was too nervous to eat his breakfast. "I hope I don't let the team down," he thought.Today was a big day: his first game as a player in the school basketball team against River High School.Justine and his teammates were coming to pick him up in fifteen minutes. Hoping to calm his nerves,Ethan walked out to the barn(畜棚),taking deep breaths of the morning air.
Suddenly, a loud noise came from behind the barn. He ran to look and saw Zeke, their young llama (羊驼),smartly pushing the gate's lock up with his mouth to open it. Before Ethan could stop him,Zeke had opened the gate and run out. Ethan quickly closed it to prevent the other animals from escaping, but Zeke was already free.
"Come back, Zeke!" Ethan called anxiously. The excited llama, however, ran quickly toward the open field. Ethan ran after him, but the gap between them only grew bigger as Zeke headed straight for a small group of trees near the busy driveway. Ethan's heart beat fast as he chased him into the trees.Once inside, he spotted Zeke and moved quietly around to his back-but when he almost caught him,Zeke immediately noticed and dashed away, getting farther and farther away!
"Oh no! I don't have time for this! Justine and my teammates will arrive soon!" Ethan thought, feeling sweat on his forehead under his baseball cap. He knew he couldn't leave for the game with Zeke still out in the open. He looked around, trying to think of the fastest way to get him back to the barn.
Just then, an idea came to him. Ethan hurried to fetch a bucket of corn and a halter(缰绳)with a rope. The com was to attract Zeke, the halter to catch him. But the problem was that he couldn't get near enough to catch him.

Dear Chris,
Knowing that you are interested in our school’s “Upcycling” exhibition, I’m delighted to share my creation—a fashion backpack made from my old jeans.
The process was simple but enjoyable. I cut off the legs, kept the upper section with its pockets as the main body, sewed the bottom shut, and added two shoulder straps for both style and practicality.
This rewarding waste-to-treasure experience has made me realize how individual efforts help with sustainable living. I wonder if you might feel inspired to give upcycling a try It would be fun!
Yours,
Li Hua
读后续写
As he felt anxious, he suddenly found Justine’s car stopping in the driveway. Justine and the other teammates jumped out of the car, spotted Ethan’s anxiety, and asked, “What’s wrong ” Ethan explained what happened, pointing to the trees where Zeke hid. “Don’t worry, we’ll help you catch him!” they said and made a plan quickly. One teammate spilled some corn to draw Zeke’s attention, while the others circled him quietly. As Zeke focused on eating, Ethan carefully slipped the halter over his head. Thanks to their teamwork, Zeke was taken back to the barn. Then they headed for the game right away.
When Ethan and his teammates got to the gym, the game was about to start. After a few minutes of warm-up, the game started. At the beginning, Ethan focused on personal performance, but it didn’t work. Justine noticed all this. During the timeout, he came over to Ethan, clapped his shoulder and said, “Basketball needs teamwork, just like catching Zeke!” Ethan agreed to change his game style. On defense, they covered each other; on attack, they passed and blocked for teammates. Ethan gradually found his rhythm. With effective coordination, Ethan and his teammates finally won the game. At that moment, Ethan realized catching Zeke and winning the game both relied on great teamwork.

W: What do you consider important when it comes to wildlife protection
M: I think educating the young on the importance of that is very important. I like developing programs for schools, which is my main job. I want to help children and teenagers appreciate the work of wildlife biologists and become involved in research and wildlife conservation.
W: I’m sure you’ve had many interesting experiences in your work.
M: Yes. I like writing in my free time. Now I’m working on a book about my experiences with wild animals.
W: I’m sure your stories will encourage more people to protect wildlife.
M: That’s why I began to work on the book.

M: Hi, Lena. You’ve just come back from visiting five cities. It must have cost a lot. So did someone help you with traveling expenses
W: Hmm... My dad knew that I’d be eager to go so he got in touch with people we know around the world. Some are relatives and some are friends. And he arranged for me to stay with each of them for a week or two.
M: So tell us a few things about each place. For example, what did you like about Athens
W: It was amazing to see some of the buildings where European civilization started thousands of years ago and Istanbul is quite similar to Athens.
M: And then you crossed the Atlantic
W: Yes, first to New York and then up to Montreal. There was so much to see and do in New York, but it all felt a little noisy for me. That’s why I prefer Montreal — it’s a bit more relaxed.
M: You ended your trip by visiting Mexico City, right
W: Yes. It’s got so many museums. I don’t know where to start!

M: Good afternoon. Welcome to this tour of Davidson College. As a senior of this college, I could tell you all about my experiences here. Over to my left is the library, and besides being the main place where students do research for paper, it’s also where a lot of students hang out between classes. There are computers and comfortable chairs everywhere, and on each floor, there are areas that do not require you to be quiet. Perhaps this is why our students like it so much! Down the road to my right is the student center, where students can buy coffee, snacks, and official Davidson College clothing. The student center is open until 10:00 p.m. on school nights and until 2:00 a.m. on weekend nights. Carson Gym, which is named after one of Davidson’s most famous professors, is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can play almost every sport you can imagine there, and there are health classes like yoga and group dance every day except Wednesday. All right , we’re coming up to the stadium now...
