Many students find it hard to fit in at a new school, but it’s different for those in the IB program at Beijing National Day School. Each year, the CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) Ceremony gives freshmen a chance to meet their peers (同龄人) and make friends with older students.
The CAS Ceremony is similar to the sorting ceremony in the world of Harry Potter. Students are sorted into four houses: Red, Yellow, Purple and Blue. Over the next few years, they will take part in various activities, such as Sports Day and the Talent Show, and compete to earn points for their houses. Different from the novel, where students are sorted by the famous Sorting Hat, the houses here are assigned randomly (随机分配). This year, the teacher used a plastic bottle filled with balls in the four house colors. Students went onstage and held out their hands, and the teacher poured out a colorful ball to determine their houses.
“I felt nervous because everything— the buildings, teachers and classmates— was so new to me,” said Shen Nanxi, who joined the Yellow House. “But when the older students and house captains greeted me with loud cheers, I felt so moved and knew I had found my ‘family’ at school.”
After the sorting, the first competition began. In each house, smaller groups of four to five students worked together to complete different tasks, such as taking silly photos, modeling their favorite teachers with clay and playing charades.
Although it was challenging to work with strangers at first, students quickly got to know one another. “The process of modeling with clay was really fun, and we grew closer as we found better ways to shape it,” said Jiang Yuanyuan from the Blue House. “We were surprised to win a prize, which made us even prouder as a team.”
24. What is the CAS Ceremony at Beijing National Day School
A. A graduation ceremony for senior students. B. A competition for students to show talents.
C. An activity for freshmen to take part in. D. A ceremony to help freshmen make friends.
25. How are students sorted into houses at the CAS Ceremony this year
A. By a magic hat similar to the novel in the Harry Potter.
B. By teachers judging from their academic performance.
C. By using a bottle filled with colored balls at random.
D. By taking part in activities and compete to earn points.
26. How did Shen Nanxi feel after being greeted by older students and house captains
A. Nervous. B. At home. C. Cheerful. D. In shock.
27. What is the purpose of the article
A. To describe the different activities in the CAS Ceremony.
B. To explain how students are sorted into different houses.
C. To introduce the CAS Ceremony at Beijing National Day School.
D. To compare the CAS Ceremony with the one in the Harry Potter novel.

In a big win for the planet, renewable energy passed coal to become the world’s main source of electricity in the first half of this year, according to new data from the global energy think tank Ember.
Electricity demand continues to rise worldwide. Despite this, the strong growth of solar and wind energy not only met the increased demand but also contributed to a small drop in coal and gas use, according to the BBC. In the first half of the year, solar power made up most of the growth, meeting 83 percent of the rise in electricity demand. Other renewables such as wind power also grew by more than 7 percent.
Among the countries that contributed to this shift, China and India were the main drivers of growth, according to the Ember report. It shows that in the first half of this year, China alone added more renewable energy than the rest of the world combined, leading to a 2percent fall in its use of fossil fuels (化石燃料). Over the same period, renewable energy in India grew three times faster than electricity demand, causing its coal and gas use to drop by3.1 percent and 34 percent.
Developed regions like the US and the European Union (EU), however, saw the opposite happen. In the US, demand for electricity grew faster than the supply of clean energy, leading to greater use of fossil fuels. And in the EU, months of weak wind and water power led to a rise in coal and gas use, as reported by the BBC.
Lower-income countries produced the most solar energy—58 percent of the total, according to the BBC. This is mainly due to big price cuts, which made solar power more affordable. For example, in 2024, Pakistan bought solar panels that could produce twice as much power as the year before. African countries are also seeing a solar boom, with panel imports rising 60 percent year on year.
This achievement is seen by experts as an important turning point. Ember senior analyst Malgorzata Wiatros-Motyka told the BBC that it “marks the beginning of a shift where clean power is keeping pace with demand growth”.
28. What made renewable energy become the world’s major source of electricity this year
A. A sharp drop in global electricity demand. B. The strong growth of solar and wind energy.
C. A complete stop of coal use worldwide. D. The decrease in the price of fossil fuels.
29. What does the underlined word “boom” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A. A rapid increase. B. A slow change. C. A complete stop. D. A sudden decrease.
30. What is Malgorzata Wiatros-Motyka’s attitude towards the renewable energy
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Uninterested. D. Critical.
31. What is the main idea of the passage
A. The demand of electricity use continues to rise worldwide.
B. The use of renewable energy grows faster around the world.
C. renewable energy and coal is the world’s main source of electricity.
D. renewable energy provides more electricity than coal does worldwide.

On Sept 22, the Chinese navy announced that three types of aircraft, including the J-35,had completed their takeoff and landing training on the Fujian aircraft carrier (航空母舰).They used the ship’s electromagnetic catapults (电磁弹射) for these tests. This achievement makes China the second country to use an advanced electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS). Besides, the Fujian is the world’s first non-nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to use EMALS.
Catapults and ski jumps are two main methods to help aircraft take off from short runways while keeping carriers lighter and cheaper, as reported by Interesting Engineering.
Ski-jump systems are easier to equip and maintain and have been popular since the Cold War. However, they limit how much weight an aircraft can carry, including fuel and weapons.
Catapult systems, on the other hand, allow aircraft to launch faster and farther and can handle heavier planes. Traditional catapults use steam power, as explained by Naval MarineArchive. They can speed up a 20- ton aircraft from 0 to 266 kilometers per hour in just two seconds. However, steam catapults need 30 to 60 minutes to build up pressure. After eight to10 launches, the pressure drops, requiring a 30- minute break to “reboil the water”. Once a launch begins, the push cannot be adjusted, which can be a problem if the settings are incorrect.
China’s EMALS, however, can be ready in just 15 minutes, according to The China Academy. Its push is strong but gentler, and it can be adjusted during launch to ensure a safe takeoff speed. Thanks to an advanced electric system developed by a team led by Chinese scientist Ma Weiming, each EMALS- assisted launch on the Fujian uses only 30kilowatt- hours(the energy provided by a thousand watts in one hour) of electricity. This is much less than the 630 kilowatt- hours needed by the USS Gerald R. Ford, the world’s largest aircraft carrier.
32. Which of the following indicates the Fujian aircraft carrier’s achievement
A. It is the world’s largest aircraft carrier. B. It is China’s first one using EMALS.
C. It combines advantages of older ones. D. It can handle various types of aircraft.
33. What is the main disadvantage of ski- jump systems
A. They need long runways. B. They are difficult to build.
C. They restrict the aircraft’s load. D. They are expensive to maintain.
34. What do we know about steam catapults
A. They need a break after a few launches. B. They allow for mid- launch push adjustments.
C. They are more gentle on aircraft than EMALS. D. They have been stopped using by many countries.
pared with the USS Gerald R. Ford, the Fujian’s EMALS uses less electricity probably because _______.
A. It features a larger size and a faster takeoff speed.
B. It uses traditional steam power instead of electricity.
C. It launches lighter aircraft than the American carrier.
D. It has a Chinese-developed advanced electric system.

How to Manage Anxiety
Many people feel nervous in social situations or crowded places. But for some, this isn’t just short- term worry— it’s an anxiety disorder. This serious condition can harm one’s life and relationships. 36 .
The first strategy is to “do it badly.” People often put tasks off because they fear not being perfect. This eagerness of perfection can make people upset. 37 . It speeds up your decision- making and helps you start acting. As you begin, you’ll often find things are not as bad as you feared.
38 . People with anxiety tend to be their own worst critics (评论家), continuously focusing on their mistakes. Therefore, it’s important to learn to be kinder to yourself. Forgive yourself for past errors or social awkwardness. This self- compassion is the first step toward recovery.
Another important strategy is to find purpose in helping others. We cannot be fully happy until we know that someone else needs us. Doing something with someone else in mind gives you a “why” to keep going. 39 . Knowing you are making a difference provides a powerful sense of meaning and can carry you through difficult times.
By adopting these coping strategies— taking action without pressure, being kind to yourself, and helping others— you can take charge of your anxiety. Each small step you take builds confidence and reduces worry. 40 , but with practice, you will see meaningful improvements in your mental well- being. Finally, you have the power to lead a calmer, more fulfilling life.
A. Remember that progress takes time
B. Forgiving yourself also matters a lot
C. Everyone has a strong desire to become perfect
D. While it can be alarming, there are practical ways to overcome it
E. This could be voluntary activities or sharing knowledge with others
F. So instead of worrying if it’s good or bad, why not just jump in and do it
G. However, the good news is that these skills can be learned to overcome anxiety

A minibus to the house leaves from the Albert Docks four times daily on these days. Tickets are$5.50 for adults and 2.50 for children and the family tickets are $12.50 for two adults and a child. There is also a small shop at the house where souvenirs and gifts can be bought. Visitors are asked to note that food is not available at the house.
Visitors to the house will be able to see much of the original furniture on the ground and first floors, together with many photographs of John, Paul, George and Ringo in the early days of The Beatles. They also can hear recordings of the songs themselves and of friends and neighbors of The Beatles talking about their memories. Visitors are reminded that all handbags and cameras must be left at the entrance to the house, and that they are not permitted to take photos inside the house. Wheelchair users can visit most of the ground floor of the house, but will not be able to visit the bedrooms on the first floor. Thank you for listening and I hope you will enjoy your visit.
