The 2020 Paralympic Games, held from August 24 to September 5,2021,saw a record 4,403 athletes compete across 22 sports. Among them was Ibrahim Hamadtou —a man whose courage and determination redefine what is possible.
Table tennis might seem an unlikely choice for someone with no arms, but the 48-year-old Egyptian Paralympian sees no limits. He holds the racket in his mouth and uses his foot to serve, turning what could be a limitation into an extraordinary skill.
Hamadtou, who lost his arms in a train accident at the age of ten, was drawn to table tennis after being in a club with his friends." I was in the club where two of my friends were playing a match."Hamadtou explains. "They disagreed on a point. When I counted the point in favor of one of them, the other player told me,' Do not get involved as you will never be able to play. 'It was that statement that fired me up to decide to play table tennis.”
It took Hamadtou three years to master the sport. He says the biggest challenge was figuring out the best way to maneuver his body." I was trying first to use the bat under the arm, and I also tried using other things that weren't working so well. Finally, I tried using my mouth. It took me nearly a year of practice to get used to holding the racket with my mouth and making the serve; with practice and playing regularly, this skill was improved."
His talent gained recognition when he was named Best Arab Athlete in 2014.He went on to win a silver medal at the 2016 African Championships and competed in both the 2016 and 2020 Paralympic Games. As Hamadtou says, "Disability does not mean having no arms or legs—it means giving up on what you want to achieve."

Below the red roofs of the Catalina Foothills, a rich area on the north end of Tucson, Arizona, lies a blanket of desert green. However, head south into the city, and the vegetation thins. On hot summer days, Tucson's shadeless neighborhoods, which are mostly low-income, struggle at summer temperatures higher than the city average by 8 degrees Fahrenheit. That difference can be deadly in a city that experienced 40 straight days above 100 degrees last year—heat that's sure to get worse with climate change.
The good news is that there's a quick solution. Tucson's city government, which has determined to populate the city's street corners and empty lots with lots of trees, recently got $5 million from the federal government to speed up the effort.
But in Tucson and many other cities, tree-planting initiatives can tackle(解决)a lot more than burning temperatures. What if Tucson's million new trees help feed people, too That's what Brandon Merchant hopes will happen on the shadeless south side of Tucson.
Merchant's initiative fits into a national trend of combining forestry with efforts to feed people. Volunteers, school teachers, and urban farmers in cities across the country are planting edible trees and plants in public spaces to create shade, provide access to green space, and supply neighbors with free and healthy food.
Merchant is drawing on a model of tree-planting that Lancaster, the urban forester, has been pioneering for 30 years in a downtown neighborhood called Dunbar Spring. Over three decades, neighborhood foresters have transformed Dunbar Spring's empty sidewalks into thick forests of trees and plants with edible parts. The more than 1,700 trees and bushes planted by Lancaster's group have also stored rainwater that otherwise would have flowed off, making communities more adaptable to extreme heat and climate change.
“It's open for harvest at any time. It's not, 'Leave a dollar, and pick an apple.' You can pick your apple, and eat your apple." Lancaster said. Merchant wants to apply the same ethic in Tucson.
28.What is the Tucson government supposed to do with the 5-million-dollar grant
A. Narrow its wealth gap. B. Restore its vegetation.
C. Expand its green spaces. D. Rid its residents of hunger.
29.How does Brandon Merchant develop Tucson food forest
A. By following suit. B. By pioneering his own idea.
C. By making it a national trend. D. By tracking two ongoing projects.
30.What do we know about the Dunbar Spring food forest
A. It falls short of expectations. B. It eases both heat and hunger.
C. It hasn't been fully appreciated. D. It alters local political landscape.
31.Which best describes Brandon Merchant
A. Overly ambitious. B. Socially responsible.
C. Academically successful. D. Economically disadvantaged.

Tourists visiting La Gomera and El Hierro in the Canary Islands can often hear locals communicating over long distances by whistling —not a tune, but the Spanish language called Silbo. Whistled languages are almost always developed by traditional cultures that live in rough, mountainous regions or in thick forest. Skilled whistlers can reach 120 decibels(分贝).As a result, whistled speech can be understood up to 10 times as far away as ordinary shouting can, experts have found.
But whistling mainly works for nontonal languages, where the pitch(音高)of speech sounds isn't crucial to the meaning of the word. English, Spanish and most other European languages are nontonal languages. For tonal languages, in contrast, the meaning of a sound depends on its pitch relative to the rest of the sentence. In Chinese, for example, “ma” said with a steady high pitch means "mother," but said with a pitch that dips and rises again, it means “horse.”
The whistled version of speech doesn't contain as much frequency information as ordinary spoken language, but it does carry enough to recognize words. When researchers tested people's comprehension of whistled Turkish, they found that experienced listeners correctly identified isolated words about 70 percent of the time; for words in common whistled sentences, with the help of the context, the accuracy rose to about 80 to 90 percent. Linguists know surprisingly few details about how the brain does this. The information crucial for understanding speech must lie somewhere within that whistled signal.
Whistled languages excite language experts for another reason, too. They share many features with what experts think the first languages must have been like, when speech and language first appeared during the dawn of modern humans. One of the big challenges of language is the need to control the vocal cords(声带) to make the full range of speech sounds. None of our closest relatives, the great apes, have developed such control—but whistling may be a simpler first step.
32.What was the root reason for the birth of whistled languages
A. Cultural diversity. B. Increased tourism.
C. Vocal cords' development. D. Geographical barriers.
33.What is a feature of sound pitch in nontonal languages
A. It's irrelevant to word meanings. B. It contains no frequency information.
C. It determines the word formation. D. It's higher than that of tonal languages.
34.Which of the following best replaces the underlined part “does this” in paragraph 3
A. Whistles words quickly. B. Tests whistlers correctly.
C. Identifies experienced whistlers. D. Understands whistled signals.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Speak in Whistles B. Get to Know Whistlers

For educators at any stage of their career, preparing for parent-teacher conferences often brings a certain level of anticipation. Over the years, I've come up with a few essential approaches that have made these meetings far more effective and meaningful. 36 Surprisingly, they guarantee your conference a success.
My most important step begins early in the semester, well before conference schedules are finalized: I focus on building a genuine, positive relationship with each student's family. 37 When caregivers already see you as a reliable partner by the time you meet, the conversation flows more openly and constructively.
Another practice I rely on is maintaining clear and consistent communication throughout the term. Regular updates—whether through a brief class newsletter or a digital platform—keep families informed about what's happening in the classroom. 38 Thus, it helps build a strong bridge between home and school.
39 Beyond the traditional in-person meeting, I also provide phone or video call alternatives, which helps me include caregivers who might otherwise be unable to attend the conference in the flesh due to work schedules, transportation, or family responsibilities.
Finally, I view conferences as a collaborative(合作的)exchange. Conferences are an active conversation among all stakeholders: students, caregivers, and teachers. So, it's a time for me to share data, observations, celebrations, and goals with caregivers. 40 I also actively encourage input from both the student and their family. This three-way dialogue helps ensure everyone is committed to the next steps.
A. But that's not all!
B. They sound straightforward.
C. The possibilities are endless.
D. Financing all the families is the top priority
E. It is key to building trust for the entire school year.
F. I've also found it helpful to offer conference options.
G. This allows parents to feel connected to their child's day-to-day learning.

Dee, my best friend, and I were both nominated (提名) for the National Junior Honor Society. For every student in our school, becoming a member was the biggest dream. Now, we were only one step away.
That weekend, Dee and I sat together in the library, filling out the application forms. We both worked hard to prove we possessed all the required qualities: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. I wrote about the effort I put into my honors math and science classes. He listed his experience of baking cookies to raise money for the community. We poured our hearts into those applications, convinced that we would pass this test—together.
The next day, we submitted the paperwork to the advisor and tried to put it out of our minds.
Months later, a letter arrived. I tore it open, only to feel a sharp stab(刺痛)of disappointment. They had not chosen me. At that very moment, I saw Dee rushing toward me from a distance, his face lit up with a bright smile, a letter in his hand. I knew immediately that his news was the opposite of mine. Without a second thought, I turned away. I knew he wanted to share his joy and had probably even planned for us to celebrate together. But I just couldn't face him.
That afternoon, I stepped off the school bus without even a glance or a goodbye to Dee.I hurried home, handed the letter to my mom,and finally let the tears roll down my cheeks. How could the world be so unfair I was completely blinded by my own anger and disappointment.

故填a。
本句是强调句It was/is+被强调部分+that+其他,此处强调主语TCM。 故填it。
故填that/ which。
故填and。
固定句型“It’s+ adj+ for sb./sth. to do sth.”,动词不定式作真正主语。故填to last。

From that day on, I didn’t talk to Dee. Every time I thought of Dee or saw Dee, the stab of sadness caused by refusal returned, making me feel bitter and angry. I noticed Dee tried to do something to mend it. One day, he even left me a note. But I looked at him coldly, tearing it into pieces. I yelled rudely, “Don’t show off.” Dee attempted to explain but I stopped him by saying “Leave me alone.” He left, obviously annoyed and upset. We became stranger, even worse than that, enemies. What I did might have made Dee think he had robbed me of that precious chance.
Mom talked with me a week later, pointing out Dee wasn’t the one to blame. “You should have congratulated your friend on this instead of feeling pitiful for yourself,” she said seriously. At that instant, I suddenly realized I treated Dee unfairly. In fact, Dee made all the efforts to stick with me. It was I who hurt him. Seized by guilt, I apologized to Dee, for my selfishness and rudeness. Dee hugged me, tears in eyes. I felt so grateful and lucky he should have forgiven me. And I also learnt a life lesson: Never forget to applaud your friend’s making it to the peak even though when you are still at the foot of the mountain.

W: The music is perfect. No wonder it’s said to be the best musical ever.
M: I’ve been thinking about going to see it, but some people say it’s not as good as expected. A lot of people find the story a bit too complex. Is it hard to follow
W: No, not really, there are just a lot of twists and turns. I thought it was interesting, and well-acted as well.
M: Who’s in it
W: Jim Rodgers, Katherine Lamb, and a few other people. Jim Rodgers used to act in stage plays so sometimes his acting is kind of larger-than-life, which makes his acting unnatural and amusing. But in this film, he does well. However, Katherine Lamb is always wooden.
M: Yeah, I wonder why. It must be her acting ability! Is it still on
W: Let me check my phone. Yes, Friday, 2.pm to 4 p.m. and there are two showings a day at weekends. One begins 8:30 in the morning and the other 4:40 in the afternoon.

W: Tell me more.
M: Well, I worked as a teacher in a high school after graduation, you know. Then I began to write. Last year one of my friends working in a filming company called me and asked whether I’d like to be a dialogue editor.
W: A dialogue editor in a filming company An actor acts. A director directs. I know that. But what does your job involve
M: Generally speaking, my work is to make sure that every word spoken by the actors is heard as intended by the director. Most of the time, I clean up unwanted noise, ensure the dialogue matches across different takes, and so on.
W: Do you like it
M: Yes. It often goes unnoticed but it’s important for both audiences and actors. It just suits a person like me.
