Joan Small,85., and Liz Lord,75., made their brave jump from the skies on September14,2025, in a fundraising effort for their care home in Banstead, Surrey.
They were asked if there was anything that they wanted to do to assist fundraising efforts, and Joan came up with the idea of a skydive, which they say the staff had thought was a joke. However, months later, the ladies were seen diving 15,000 feet through the sky into a field, with huge smiles on their faces.
Liz, who is originally from Australia, said,“We were very pleased and excited about doing it. We were also nervous, Joan more so because she couldn't see what was going on so she had to put n lot of trust in the people around her. We were looked after really well when we were down there. A new study shows that a targeted treatment for cats' head and neck cancer could open the door to similar treatments in humans. Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC)is a deadly cancer affecting both cats and humans.
In a small trial involving 20 cats with HNSCC, researchers found that over a third of the treated cats experienced controlled disease progression with few side effects. This suggests the drug could also be effective for humans with the same condition. The drug tested is the first to specifically target the molecule (分子) STAT 3, which is present in various tumors(肿瘤),including HNSCC.
It's hard to treat HNSCC in pet cats. Most of these animals die within 2 to 3 months after receiving a medical confirmation of the illness. One cat in the trial, a 9-year-old black cat named Jak, was initially given only 6 to 8 weeks to live. After a month of weekly treatments,Jak's health greatly improved—a turnaround that ultimately gave him eight more months of life.
Out of the 20 cats involved in the study, seven got a bit better. The average survival time of these seven cats after treatment was 161 days. Daniel Johnson, a co-author of the study, highlighted two key findings. First, the study showed that it's possible to target the genetic (基因的) regulatory factors which control gene expression and cause cancer, even though this has been a tough challenge. Secondly, it showed that pets with cancer could serve as reliable models for human disease, offering more dependable results than mouse models.
The drug molecule works by blocking the activity of STAT3 and increasing the levels ofPD-1, a protein linked to the immune (免疫的) response to cancer. Jennifer Grandis, another study author, emphasized the importance of investing resources wisely in research models. She said,“Working with animal cancer doctors and doing drug tests on pets can give us useful information about how well drugs work, and it's also good for the pets. None of the cats in the trials were harmed, and many experienced positive outcomes.”
28. What can t we learn about the drug tested in the study
A. It targets a specific molecule related to canoer.
B. It hns been widely nsed to treat human HNSCC.
C. It causes serious si le effects in most treated catns.
D. It works hy reducing th o level of PD-1 in the body.
29. What happened to Jak after the treatment
A. He lived for less than 6 weeks.
B. He got better and lived longer.
C. His condition got worse quickly.
D. He showed no response to the treatment.
30. What does Daniel Johnso o think of the pets in. cancer research
A. They can replace human test subjects.
B. They are too difficult to hanille in trials.
C. They have similar survival rates to lab mice.
D. They outperform mouse models in reliability.
31. What is Jennifer Grandis's attitude towards testing drugs on pets
A. Doubtful. B. Unconcerned.
C. Supportive. D. Critical.

Reviewing more than a century of studies that explored links between handedness and creativity, new Cornell University research finds the widespread belief that lefties(左撇子)are more creative is not actonly true.
“The data do not support any advantage in creative thinking for lefties,” said DanielCasasanto, associate professor of psychology.“In fact, there is some evidence that righties are more creative in some laboratory tests, and strong evidence that righties make up a higher percentage in highly creative professions.”
Casasanto said there are scientific reasons to believe that left-handed people, conservatively estimated to comprise about 10% of the population, would have an advantage over others in creativity. Divergent(发散的)thinking— the ability to explore many possible solutions to a problem in a short time and make unexpected connections—— is supported more by the brain's right hemisphere(半球).
The researchers conducted an analysis— sorting through nearly 1,000 relevant scientific papers published since 1900. Most were weeded out because they did not report data in a standardized way or included only righties, leaving 17 studies reporting nearly 50 effect sizes.
The analysis revealed that handedness made little difference in the three most common laboratory tests of its link to divergent thinking; if anything, righties had a-small advantage on some tests:
What has kept people believing that left-handers have special creativity One factor, the authors suppose, is left-handed exceptionalism; the idea that it's rare to be a lefty and rare to be s creative genius, so perhaps one explams the other. Another is the popular belief that creative genius is linked to mental illness. It turns out lefties, who are more likely to be artists, experience higher rates of depression.
Finally, Casasanto said,“The focus on these two creative professions where lefties make up a majority, art and music, is a really common statistical error that humans make all the time. People assumed that there are many left-handed artists and musicians, so lefties must be more creative. But if you do an objective survey of lots of professions, then this apparen'lefty superiority disappears.”
32. How shd the researchers draw the canclusion
A. By roviewing the estimated statietios.
B. Hy analysing the dats of formes atudies.
C. By clasailying thu features of ernativity。
D. By comparing the functions of two hemispheres。
3. i. Why slo people generally believe that lefties are more creative
A. Lefties are more likely to suffer (rom physical iliness.
B. Selcntifie resenreh has proven lefties are more creative,
C. Lefties make up a biggor part in the rotal population.
D. Rosearch focuses only out two creativn professions with many leftieh.
34. Which of the following would be the best title for the text
A. Righties; Are Thoy Born Goniuses

A postcard sent from the United Nations headquarters in Now York got to the post office in Ottawa, Illiuois, in August. It was nothing special, but its postmark(邮藏) was 8 p. m.on June 17, 1953.
Postal offic als believed the postcard, addressed to“Rev. F. E. Ball and family”, had been lost at the UN for the past 72 years and was only recently found and mailed. By the time it reappeared, though, the Ball family no longer lived at that address. But Mark Thompson, the postman in Ottawa, didn't want to throw it nway. The postcard should go back to the person who sent it or their family. Dctermined, Thompson began asking around.
Word spread, and local reporters picked up the story, attracted by the mystenous(神秘的)sender who had signed the card, simply, “△lan”.
For Terry Carbone, genealogy(家请学) became a retirement passion— and n way ro help others. he said. So when he read about. the postcard in the local newspaper, be knew it was his call to action. He reached out to the reporter, saying he“may be able to help”. Using resources at the Reddick Public Library, Terry and volunteers found key pieces of this mystery surrounding“Alan Ball”. The search eventually pointed west. It seemed“Alan”could be Dr. Alan Ball, now 88 and retired more than 1,700 miles away in Sandpoint, Idaho.
It had all started in 1953 when Ball took a train from Ottawa to New York, where he planned to board a plane for Puerto Rico to spend the summer with his Aunt Mary. With time to spare in New York before heading to the airport, he stopped at the United NationsSecretariat Building. There, he put a two-cent stamp on a postcard of the building and mailed it to his parents to let them know, “I made it as far as New York”. Still at 88, Ball recalled his experiences in Puerto Rico fondly.
注意:1.续写词数应为 150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Last week, Ball received a call telling him a postcard he possibly sent in 1963 had been recovered.

Last week, Ball received a call telling him a postcard he possibly sent in 1953 had ee recovered. At first, he thought it was some kind of joke, his mind struggling to grasp the idea that a piece of mail from so long ago could resurface. But as the caller explained the details of how it was found and the efforts made to track him down,Ball's heart filled with a mix of surprise and excitement. Memories of that summer trip in 1953flooded back, and he eagerly anticipated seeing the postcard again.
A few days later, the postcard arrived at home. He held it in his hands, his fingers gently touching the faded lines and the old stamp. It was like holding a precious treasure from the past.Looking at the familiar image of the UN SecretariatBuilding, he could almost hear the sounds of NewYork City and feel the anticipation of his journey toPuerto Rico. Ball decided to frame the postcard and hang it on the wall as a reminder of the warmth and kindness of strangers.
