Thailand’s four train journeys
If you’re not in a rush, you can take trains to travel around Thailand. Here are the four best train journeys in the country.
Mahachai Line
Start: Thonburi. End: Samut Songkhram.
Start at Thonburi’s Wongwian Yai train station, just across the Chao Phraya River from Bangkok. From the window, you can see homes, temples, shops, palm trees and rice fields. The farmland disappears as you enter Samut Sakhon. After getting off and walking through a busy fresh market, you’ll reach a harbor (港口).
Death Railway
Start: Thonburi. End: Nam Tok.
Built in the 1940s the Death Railway is Thailand’s most famous and historic train line. A total of 688 bridges were built along the route (路线). The trains that run the Death Railway are 3rd-class, meaning they have no air-conditioners and mostly wooden benches. It’s a tourist line, so there’re stops for short visits to historical sites and a cave.
Beach Train
Start: Bangkok. End: Hua Hin.
This route skirts around the Gulf of Thailand. Your destination, Hua Hin, is Thailand’s original beach resort (旅游胜地). The central attraction of the route is Hua Hin’s red-and-white train station, which was built in 1926. The train is largely responsible for Hua Hin’s wealth; therefore, the station is a major source of pride.
Train to Laos
Start: Chiang Mai. End: Thanaleng.
Starting from Chiang Mai in the afternoon, this route crosses the Mekong River into Laos. In the morning, with warm sunlight streaming into your bed, you’ll pass by the tiny villages and seemingly endless rice fields. After a stop in Nong Khai, you’ll cross the so-called Friendship Bridge to Laos.
21. Which two train journeys share the same starting point according to the text
A. Mahachai Line and Beach Train. B. Death Railway and Beach Train.
C. Mahachai Line and Death Railway. D. Death Railway and Train to Laos.
22. What can be learned about Mahachai Line
A. Its destination is a busy fresh market.
B. It is the shortest tourist line in Thailand.
C. It provides you with good views along the line.
D. Its starting station is a popular tourist attraction.
23. Where can the text be found
A. A science textbook. B. A travel guide. C. A history magazine. D. A business newspaper.

Year-12 student Noah Little has already sat his first Chinese-speaking exam and said it was “the easiest exam I’ve ever done”. That view is not surprising given the Wagga High School student loves language — so much so he has built a Chinese translation app.
Noah said his love of language was encouraged by his community. “Wagga is a place full of people from different cultures, and sometimes when I meet new people who have trouble speaking English I like to talk to them in their own language,” he said. “I also have a few Chinese friends so I think it will be cool to talk to them in their language.”
The 17-year-old started teaching himself Chinese around five years ago, before taking distance education classes at the start of Year 11. His language ability was also useful in his part-time job at a local Chinese restaurant, where he translated orders for the cooks and customers.
Noah said he also had a basic knowledge of seven other languages. It was while teaching himself languages that Noah got the idea of the translation tool. “I decided to make my own app because there weren’t many around—all the other apps were full of advertisements (广告) and the translation feature (功能) wasn’t powerful enough,” he said.
His app also includes a word of the day feature, lessons on how to write Chinese characters (汉字) and a news feed of important Chinese news.
He said learning computer programming to build the app had been like studying another language. With the end of school around the corner, Noah said he would like to pursue (追求) both his interests in computer programming and languages. “I’m planning to work for a year and save so I can go on to university as I really want to make a career (事业) out of one of these two topics.”
24. What do we know about Noah
A. He gets a lot from learning Chinese. B. He failed his first Chinese exam.
C. He likes teaching Chinese to people. D. He began to learn Chinese at 11 years old.
25. Which of the following is the exception among the features of Noah’s app
A. A daily word feature. B. Lessons for writing Chinese characters.
C. Updates on significant Chinese news. D. Computer games for language practice.
26. What has Noah decided to do shortly after high school graduation
A. Learn more languages. B. Attend university.
C. Develop a new app. D. Look for a job.
27. Which of the following can best describe Noah
A. Brave and caring. B. Confident and honest.
C. Curious and creative. D. Outgoing and patient.
C
Due to the heavy academic pressure and safety issues, our children’s movements are limited by a lack of extra-curricular activities, which usually ensure that they meet the daily recommended level of physical activity.
For those children attending a high school, my own included, the morning and afternoon walk could be the only chance that they get to spend time outside. This is a golden opportunity to add sports into their day, without taking part in group sports or going to a closed indoor gym.
For walking to school, there are also many other benefits, such as improving school performance, reducing anxiety, improving spirits, better sleep, a sense of independence, opportunities to meet friends or think alone, paying attention to small details and being amazed by the surrounding environment.
However, parents still have fears. Parents fear cars, injury, extreme weather and even wild animals. These fears, many of which are almost impossible to happen, prevent parents from allowing their children to do something that’s actually beneficial to them. “Removing an opportunity to be active leads to an increase in childhood obesity (肥胖), which can have a greater negative impact on a child’s life than the risk of being injured due to being active,” said Dr. Mariana Brussoni, a professor who researches children’s outdoor and risky play.
When it comes to changing the culture around parents driving children to school, much work still needs to be done. Therefore, parents should try to let go slowly and give up the idea that driving their children to school is convenient. Brussoni said, “We hope to shift parents from focusing on protecting their children to trusting their independent abilities. Schools can also play a role in encouraging children to walk to school.”
28. Who is the text most probably written to
A. Grandparents. B. Teachers. C. Parents. D. Professors.
29. What is parents’ worry about children’s walking to school
A. Children’s safety. B. Children’s physical health.
C. Children’s school performance. D. Children’s mental health.
30. What’s the author’s opinion on driving children to school
A. Negative. B. Doubtful. C. Unconcerned. D. Unclear.
31. What is the main purpose of the text
A. To explain the causes of childhood obesity.
B. To advise parents to allow children to walk to school.
C. To analyze the learning pressure of students.
D. To discuss the risks of walking to school.
D
If you’re someone who has been worrying about the rise of the robots—hold on there just a second, and let them help you impress your friends with some newfound skills in a foreign language. Using artificial intelligence (AI) to help us learn and improve those skills is not new—some of the online language tools we turn to every day are powered by AI.
But as new technologies flood into the market, now is a great time to take advantage of the tech. And according to experts, these tools aren’t replacing teachers — they’re making their lives easier. One of the things that stops some of us from practising speaking in a new language is a lack of self-confidence. AI can help — chatbots don’t judge (评价) you. Of course, teachers don’t either, but for some people, communicating with a bot may remove that fear of failure or shyness.
The latest chatbots use something called natural language processing that allows them to understand human speech or writing, providing a human-like response right away. While chatbots are extremely useful for learners working solely, teachers can also offer course material and ask an AI system to produce personalized textbooks for groups of students. The AI can also provide feedback (反馈) in seconds — gone are the days of waiting a week for work to be graded.
Past online language tools and games were able to tell you when you were wrong, but they weren’t always able to explain why. Now, not only has that changed, but the explanations are detailed and immediate. But this is not to underestimate (低估) the role of the teachers, who can use the technology to help learn more about the strengths and weaknesses of their students and personalize their teaching.
So, if you want to impress your friends with your perfect speech, don’t be afraid of AI. Just think of it as a useful tool for both teachers and language learners, which will give you more time and space to enjoy learning something new!
32. In which aspect does AI mainly help language learners according to Paragraph 2
A. Building their confidence. B. Improving time management.
C. Remembering more words. D. Getting useful learning methods.
33. What is the influence of AI on teachers
A. Replacing their jobs. B. Making teaching easier.
C. Increasing work pressure. D. Collecting more feedback.
34. What does the underlined word “solely” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Happily. B. Quickly. C. Singly. D. Secretly.
35. What does the author think of the teachers’ roles in the age of AI
A. Teachers are still important.
B. Teachers will give way to robots.
C. Experienced teachers are more popular.
D. Teachers are better than robots in language learning

They wanted to live in the city and our town was very poor, but I didn’t want to move. At first, I hated it so much. There were too many people and it was always so noisy. Worst of all, I had to leave all of my friends! For almost two years, I was mad about having to live there. Three years later I started to like the city. I realized that I should just enjoy what I had and stop thinking about what I didn’t have. What really changed my mind about the city were all the new things to try. I was able to do some new activities in the city. I met so many amazing people along the way!

【答案】24. A 25. D 26. D 27.
