Last September, an American started a trip through Southwest China on a standard bike she had bought at a local shop. In three months, Jennifer Holstein cycled 2,500 kilometers through three provinces with just two small bags.
She lived in Beijing, and her life was already great. But Holstein felt the appetite to travel the world and look for adventure. It was mid-August of 2021 that the idea came to her to travel China by bicycle. At that time, Holstein had never cycled for more than 20 kilometers around her local city of Beijing.
Holstein shared an experience from the beginning of her trip when she found herself stuck in a tunnel (隧道) with a flat tyre. It was dark and hot, and she was so scared because she had never changed a tyre before. Suddenly, a group of cyclists old enough to be her grandparents came and rescued her.
In addition to receiving the kindness of people across China, Holstein also experienced several unique cultural experiences by attending three local weddings. She spoke about one wedding in detail, “I was in the middle of a small village in Sichuan province, and I was taken into a local Tibetan family’s home and they invited me to take part in a wedding. They gave me a dress and even did my makeup. I never thought I would ever have the chance to take part in a Tibetan wedding.”
According to Holstein, “Many people want to travel the world and take huge risks, but never do. Don’t just live your life hoping your wildest dreams will become a reality someday. Try first and the rest will work itself out.” In addition to biking for her own passion and curiosity, Holstein also linked her ride to raise 22,000 yuan for the United Foundation for China’s Health.

Theo works days, nights, and weekends in the tulip (郁金香) fields in the Netherlands and never complains about tired muscles. How is this possible Theo, named after a retired farmer, is a high-tech robot in the battle to root out disease from the fields.
The robot rolls along rows of yellow and red tulips, checking each plant and, when necessary, killing diseased bulbs (鳞茎) to prevent the spread of the tulip-breaking virus (病毒). The virus weakens the bulbs, leaving them unable to flower. The dead bulbs are removed from healthy ones in a sorting center after they have been harvested. There are 45 robots like Theo working in the tulip fields of the Netherlands. Their job becomes important as the winter turns to spring and peak season nears, when people come from around the world to admire the colorful flowers.
In the past, this work was carried out by knowledgeable farmers. Allan Visser is a third-generation tulip farmer who is using the robot. “You could buy a very nice sports car for the price of the robot,” Visser said. The robot costs 185,000 euros. “It’s a lot slower than a sports car, rolling on caterpillar tracks (履带) through fields,” he added. “But I choose the robot because a sports car doesn’t see the sick tulips. Now there are fewer and fewer people who can really do that.”
The robots have been trained to detect sick plants. They have cameras and take thousands of photos of the tulips. Their AI model examines the photos, hunting out signs on sick plants, and decides which ones need to be killed. The engineer explains the robots use GPS to be sure they are destroying the correct tulips. The heart of the machine is the knowledge put into the AI model, which comes from experienced tulip farmers like Theo van der Voort, who gave his name to the robot.
Van der Voort retired after 52 years of looking for sick flowers in his fields. “It’s fantastic,” he said. “It sees just as much as I see.”
28. What does the robot Theo do
A. Plant new tulips. B. Kill deadly viruses.
C. Clear unhealthy bulbs. D. Harvest grown flowers.
29. What can we infer from Visser’s words
A. He dreams of a sports car.
B. The robot is worth the cost.
C. Tulip fields are low in production.
D. Farmers lack technical knowledge.
30. What is the key to making the robots work effectively
A. Stored knowledge. B. High-tech cameras.
C. GPS systems. D. Daily training.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Tulip Seasons: An Attraction of the Netherlands
B. AI Robots: A Replacement for Aging Farmers
C. Visser’s Practice: A Tradition in Tulip Businesses
D. Theo’s Watch: An Advance in Tulip Farming

A Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine researcher has developed a new theory of consciousness (意识).
“Our theory is that consciousness developed as a memory system that is used by our unconscious brain to help us flexibly and creatively imagine the future and plan accordingly,” explained corresponding author Andrew Budson, MD, professor of neurology (神经病学).
“What is completely new about this theory is that it suggests we don’t perceive the world, make decisions, or perform actions directly. Instead, we do all these things unconsciously and then — about half a second later — consciously remember doing them.”
“Conscious processes were simply too slow to be actively involved (参与) in music, sports, and other activities where split-second reflexes (反应) are required. But if consciousness is not involved in such processes, then a better explanation of what consciousness does was needed,” said Budson.
According to the researchers, this theory explains that all our decisions and actions are actually made unconsciously, although we fool ourselves into believing that we consciously made them. So, we can say to ourselves, we’re just going to have one spoonful of ice cream and, the next thing we know, the container is empty, because our conscious mind is not controlling our actions. Even our thoughts are not generally under our conscious control. This lack of control is why we may have difficulty stopping a stream of thoughts running through our head as we’re trying to go to sleep, and also why mindfulness (专注) is hard.
Lastly, their paper provides a road map as to how doctors, educators and individuals can best improve behavior and gain knowledge, by using clinical and teaching methods that can be effective in shaping both the conscious mind and the unconscious brain. For instance, with further exploration, this work may allow patients to improve problem behaviors such as overeating, help us understand the ways in which brain structures support memory, and even provide insight into philosophical issues around free will and moral responsibility.
32. What does the underlined word “perceive” in paragraph 3 probably means
A. Sense. B. ignore.
C. Face. D. Change.
33. How is the text mainly developed
A. By listing figures.
B. By analyzing examples.
C. By providing facts.
D. By making contrasts.
34. Why are we going to have ice cream in an empty container
A. Actions are made unconsciously first.
B. Our conscious mind controls our decisions.
C. Thoughts are stopped from running through our head.
D. Conscious processes are involved in quick response.
35. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. Brain structures. B. Problem behavior.
C. Practical applications. D. Effective methods.

Every student has one or two teachers in their lives that have influenced them in one way or another. Such teachers have the highest place in their lives and the students do respect such teachers all their lives. I also have a teacher that I respect, and she has influenced me a lot. I was in my schooling age when I came across my English teacher, Miss Alveena. She was very kind and sweet, especially to her students.
The most adoring aspect of her teaching was that she never ignored her weak students. She gave them extra time and extra attention so that they could be brought back on track. We were in O-Levels and I was very weak in English. When we talked about the English of O-Levels, it was even harder for me to get through. I was very worried about my grades in English and I was not aware that my teacher was even more worried compared to me about my results.
One day she called me to her office and calmly asked me about my problems. Usually the teachers inquire of the children in such a tone and manner that it confuses the students and they don’t tell their problems to the teacher, but the way she asked me made me so relaxed that I told her all my problems and the things in which I was having problems and I was weak. When I told her all my questions, she asked me to stay after school for 2 hours daily so that I could get the correction of my errors. She had two very little kids, so it was hard for her to stay late in the school. However, in order to help me, she used to stay at school for almost 2 to 3 hours longer daily.

原文:M: In the UK, most children have their midday meal at school, but in many schools, parents can choose what their children eat. The children can have a school dinner — a hot, cooked meal, or they can take a packed lunch with them, which usually includes cold food like sandwiches.
To make sure children can have healthy dinner at school, a famous UK cook called Jamie Oliver started an event to improve children’s dinners. Before that, Jamie spent a year working in a school kitchen. Jamie was horrified at the junk food which he saw being served at school. There were hamburgers, pizza and chips. So he decided to ban the junk food at school, and started cooking healthy food for students. Finally, Jamie improved the school dinner and trained other people to cook healthy food. Then he put pressure on the government to improve the standards of school food across the country. And it looks like the changes have begun.

【答案】 Recently, we have had a heated discussion about whether we should use electronic dictionary pens. Different people hold different views.
Some students are in favour of the idea, arguing that the electronic dictionary pen is easy to carry, which brings convenience to our English learning. Moreover, it’s faster to get the meaning by scanning a word. Nevertheless, others are against it. First, they hold the belief that the electronic dictionary pen has a small vocabulary and fewer explanations of words. Second, we may become too dependent when it comes to memorizing new words.
Personally, I think using electronic dictionary pens should be allowed, which will help us learn English more conveniently.

【答案】
Her devotion to her students was not hidden. She was worried not only for me but also for other children of the class who were also weak in English. She asked those children to stay with me and work for the improvement of the course. She never asked for any extra payment or charges, although it was not her obligation and responsibility to give such overtime to the students. Her efforts and devotion deserved great praise from us. I was full of confidence when the time for examinations approached.
When I came out of the examination hall, I was surprised to see Miss Alveena waiting for me. She told me that she had just come to know about how my exam went. Therefore, when I knew I got an A in my English exam, she was the first one whom I called, and there was no doubt that she was even more glad than me for my result. After that, I began to consult her about all my problems and ask for her guidance and advice in all aspects of my life.
