Efforts to help Scotland’s red squirrels are bearing positive fruits, which owes much to the Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels (SSRS) project and its helper, Polly Pullar, who has transformed her farm into red squirrels’ natural habitat.
Polly recalls her first encounters with red squirrels at school in Dunkeld. Despite being a top student and popular girl on campus, she, as a boarder, frequently missed her family far away when she was alone. She got her first baby squirrels to look after in the nearby woods. “I became completely absorbed in them and they distracted me from missing home too much,” she says.
The squirrels eventually returned to the wild, and since then she has regularly taken more in, developing special techniques such as regular touching to stimulate bodily functions. In Polly’s view, the eventual release is often challenging because the newly released squirrels still need feeding until they rewild themselves. Their delicate character makes them suffer from stress more seriously than other small creatures.
Polly’s own farm, where she lives now, has a rising population of the reds. There are open fields, dense woods and little clearings. With the help of the SSRS, more than 20,000 trees have been planted. On the farm, everything is kept untidy. “We arrange it intentionally to keep the living environment of squirrels original and natural.” To Polly’s relief, it has proved a major boost for the reds’ population.
Polly believes the reds have a healthy future if efforts can be maintained. That is a matter of money, one for the politicians. The experience of raising red squirrels has taught Polly a lesson: “When I have these baby squirrels in my hands and they are completely dependent on me, they highlight the fact that we humans hold the key to nature. It is our duty to protect the natural world.”
24. What did tending the baby squirrels relieve Polly of
A. Social anxiety. B. Academic pressure.
C. Life’s boredom. D. Intense homesickness.
25. What is Polly’s concern for returning the squirrels to the wild
A. The choice of suitable places. B. The lack of special techniques.
C. The need for constant feeding. D. The stress from other animals.
26. Why doesn’t Polly keep the farm neat and well arranged
A. To preserve an undisturbed habitat. B. To attract the attention of the SSRS.
C. To seek politicians’ economic support. D. To make room for newly- planted trees.
27. What do Polly’s words mainly convey in the last paragraph
A. Her pride in human superiority. B. Her affection for red squirrels.
C. Her sense of shared responsibility. D. Her appreciation of the wildness.

Young adult (YA) fiction is traditionally aimed at teenagers. However, new research shows that a growing number of adult readers have been reading YA fiction since 2019. A study by HarperCollins found that 74% of YA readers are adults, with 28% being over 28.
This trend is partly due to “emerging adulthood”, where young people are growing up more slowly and delaying traditional adult life, often marked by feelings of instability. This has driven them to seek comfort in young adult fiction, a habit that many retain as they grow older.
For many adults, reading YA is simply another enjoyable choice, just like picking any other book genre (体裁). Some readers strongly defend the quality of YA, saying that many YA books are beautifully written and deal with important issues such as self- discovery, family, and racism. Furthermore, YA books can serve as a form of “self-care”. Many readers find these books more accessible than a lot of adult fiction. Because YA books are written specifically for slightly younger readers, reading for pleasure when a person is tired becomes less demanding. Besides, their plot- driven nature offers perfect escape from reality.
The study also looked at younger readers aged 14 to 25. It found that 40% of those who strongly identified as a reader also described themselves as “very happy”. This is much higher than the 21% of non- readers who felt the same way. Alison David, consumer insight director at HarperCollins, said the research “suggests wellbeing comes from more than the act of reading. The psychology of being a reader is enormously powerful.”
Despite the clear benefits, the study shows a contradiction: only 16% of 14- to 25- year- olds read daily or nearly every day for pleasure. Many report that heavy schoolwork leaves them with too little time to read for fun. This presents a challenge: how to encourage regular reading among young people who know its value but struggle to find time for books.
28. What does the underlined word “retain” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Change. B. Keep. C. Restore. D. Abandon.
29. Why do some adults turn to YA books for self-care
A. Because they are full of joyful themes. B. Because they are easy to get from stores.
C. Because they are simple and engaging. D. Because they are better than adult novels.
30. What can be inferred from the data about reading and happiness
A. The happier young people are, the more books they read.
B. Reading every day is the key to happiness for the young.
C. A positive reader self-image contributes to one’s happiness.
D. Schoolwork is the main factor affecting students’ happiness.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Rise of YA Fiction Among Adult Readers B. YA Fiction: A New Trend Among Teenagers
C. The Challenge of Reading for Young People D. Reading for Pleasure: A Key to Well-being
D
If current trends are correct, around 41 million people will die from noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in 2025, representing about 74 percent of all global deaths. Despite major medical advances, the number of deaths from NCDs continues to rise. One main reason for this increase is urbanization. By 2050, it is predicted that two out of every three people will live in cities, making these trends extremely worrying.
Now, new research indicates that people who live in greener areas have lower rates of NCDs and better physical and mental health. Why do green spaces help fight NCDs Greater opportunities for exercise, cleaner air, and less heat stress are all reasons. More importantly, there is strong scientific proof that when we interact with nature, it brings about biochemical reactions in our bodies that improve our health. This began with Japanese scientists studying “forest bathing”, or shinrin-yoku. The evidence found was so strong that in Japan, doctors sometimes prescribe (开处方) spending time sitting in forests instead of medication for certain NCDs.
Similar health benefits can be obtained in urban green spaces and with indoor plants. For example, studies show that simply having a vase of flowers on your desk can lower your blood pressure. Having leafy plants in your home or office can also help.
Scented (芳香的) plants also offer health benefits. When we breathe in a scent, its volatile organic compounds (VOCs) pass into our blood. Once in the blood, these compounds act like medicines leading to positive health outcomes. One of the most important and thrilling recent experiments shows that walking in a pine forest for two hours can significantly increase natural killer cells in our blood— these are the cells that attack cancers and viruses. Even looking at green views from a window or hearing bird songs can reduce stress and improve cognitive (认知的) performance.
This new evidence means that in 2025, doctors will increasingly prescribe nature instead of drugs. Urban planners, on the other hand, will no longer consider green spaces as something unessential.
32. How does the author present the issue in the first paragraph
A. By giving examples. B. By explaining reasons.
C. By showing findings. D. By providing statistics.
33. What does the author try to illustrate by mentioning forest bathing in paragraph 2
A. Japan prefers nature over hospitals. B. Cultural traditions can heal diseases.
C. Japan’s forests are unique globally. D. Science supports nature-based care.
34. How do plant VOCs improve health
A. They can remove pollution from the air. B. They can kill viruses in human blood.
C. They can promote healing in the body. D. They can help people focus on their tasks.
35. Which aspect of the research does the last paragraph talk about
A. Its challenges. B. Its significance.
C. Its limitations. D. Its complexity.
Human waste could help farmers
Some types of farming are harmful to the planet. 36
A lot of crops need extra nutrition to grow, so farmers add substances called fertilizers(肥料) to their soil to boost plants’ growth. These are important because they keep crops healthy and make sure that there is enough food for people and animals. 37 Every year, farmers around the world spend huge amounts of money on a total of 205 million tons of fertilizers, leading to severe water pollution and loss of biodiversity.
38 They are mostly made in factories by burning natural gas and mixing it with minerals. Producing fertilizers takes a lot of energy and the whole process— from digging out the minerals to transporting the final product to farms— creates pollution. This pollution includes carbon dioxide, a gas that contributes to climate change.
Nevertheless, a method known as biochar technology, which is already used to make fuel, could turn human waste into a different type of fertilizer. The new study suggests this could be better for the planet and cheaper for farmers. Human waste is rich in nutrients which plants love. 39 Even worse, it can also contain leftover medicines, microplastics and poisonous metals.
According to the new study, biochar technology can turn human waste into safe plant food. The process is called pyrolysis, where the waste is heated up in special tanks. 40 Besides, the waste is made into solid, dry blocks, which are up to 90% smaller and lighter than the original form, which would make it much easier to store and transport.
A. Fertilizers are usually a mix of certain chemicals.
B. What is beneficial to plants is beneficial to the environment.
C. On the negative side, it can carry harmful bacteria and viruses.
D. But with too much use of fertilizers, the quality of crops suffers.
E. Unfortunately, they are expensive and come at an environmental cost.
F. However, a new study has found that could change thanks to human waste.
G. The harmful stuff in the waste won’t be a problem as it can be removed in the process.

Collecting and setting up the Christmas village was a special tradition in our family passed down through generations. It was composed of fifty-three tiny, decorated houses, which represented decades of family memories.
My husband and I had always done the job together, but this year was different. Due to a business commitment, he couldn’t return until Christmas Eve. This was the first time that I had attempted to put up my full Christmas village alone. Looking at various Christmas decorations— lights, ornament s (挂件), and fake snow— spread across the floor, I had no idea how long it would take me to get the work done.
“Do you need some help ” my son asked, carefully stepping over piles of boxes. He was home on vocation and was preparing for his college program, so I hesitated, not wanting to distract him from his studies. “I need a break anyway. So, where shall we begin ” He rubbed his hands together, a smile brightening his face.
Awaking from my exhausted blank, I joined him across the room and tried to begin making sense of the chaos. As we worked side by side, I taught him all my tricks for setting up villages and shared the family stories about how the village began and how it grew into this huge collection. I even showed him how to make a few mistakes and how to fix them.
Three hours passed, my body was aching and my hands were trembling with tiredness, but the village was still half done. “I’m already worn out.” I murmured.
“Maybe skip them this year,” he suggested gently. “It’s beautiful as it is.”
Since I was scheduled to work the next day, we cleaned up the room and left the village exactly as it was. The next morning, as I was heading out the door, I paused and looked at the village again. I wish I had pushed through and it could have been much better. Just then, my son came out of his room and saw the disappointment in my eyes. He waved me off with an understanding smile.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Para 1: That afternoon when I came back, I was astonished by what I saw.
Para 2: My son smiled, saying, “The family tradition was worth more.”

Possible Version 1:
Dear Tom,
I’m Li Hua from Class 2. I would like to suggest our class put on an English short play about campus life in the English Culture Festival.
This decision fits well with the festival’s goal to enrich the English learning atmosphere and promote students’ comprehensive development. Firstly, through scriptwriting, we will improve our writing ability, while rehearsing and performing will enable us to speak more fluently and confidently. Secondly staging a short play offers a dynamic approach to cultivating a wide range of competences, from acting and emotion expression to teamwork.
I appreciate your thoughtful consideration and am eager to hear from you!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
Possible Version 2:
Dear Tom,
I’m Li Hua from Class 2. I’m writing to propose singing an English song in chorus for the English Culture Festival.
We believe a chorus performance is a perfect choice, as it effectively enhances English skills, fosters teamwork, and promotes inclusiveness. Firstly, mastering song lyrics is a fun and natural way to polish pronunciation and expand vocabulary. Secondly, the collaborative rehearsal process is key to strengthening team spirit and building a strong sense of belonging. Finally, a chorus, by its nature, is highly inclusive as it allows for broad participation.
I sincerely hope you find merit in this proposal and would be delighted to discuss it further.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节
That afternoon when I came back, I was astonished by what I saw. My son sat at the table, adding the final details to the Christmas village. I moved closer, my eyes widening in amazement. Every little house, with colorful lights in its windows and fake snow on its rooftop, stood neatly on the table. At that moment, a wave of peace washed over me, and all my work tiredness faded away. I quietly settled beside him and, unable to contain my curiosity, asked what had motivated him to put the final touches on the decorations.
My son smiled, saying. “The family tradition was worth more.” He explained he had set aside his college program as his mind was full of the family stories about each house. It dawned on me that he had grown into a dependable man, ready to shoulder the weight of family. With the flick of a switch, he then lit up the village, every window shining brightly. As we admired the glowing houses together, I felt warmth flooding my heart. The tradition wasn’t just about the village but about passing on love and memories.

M: It’s hard to decide. On the one hand, kids can do the same project through the Internet. On the other hand, schools aren’t just for learning, and they’re equally important for building social skills. So, I’m not very sure about that.
Text 10
M: Hello, everyone. My name is Alex, and I’m the Daily Chronicle’s Young Journalist of the Year. Let me share my journey with you. I’m into taking pictures of special moments, but it wasn’t until I was studying at the University of Liverpool for my degree in Communications that I decided to turn this passion into a profession. I was approached to photograph events for the student union, and it occurred to me that I could make a living doing what I love. After graduating, I decided to participate in the Daily Chronicle’s Young Journalist of the Year contest. The reward for this award was an opportunity to work with the newspaper. It’s been an amazing experience working there. Right from the start, I was given significant responsibilities, such as covering political events and sports matches. I take my work very seriously, which is essential but sometimes a challenge when you want to bring a smile to the readers’ faces with your images. Trust is crucial in photography, especially when working with people. They tend to open up more when they know they’re being photographed by someone who is trusted, and my association with the Daily Chronicle has earned me that trust. The editorial team also has faith in my abilities, and that trust has been key to my success in delivering quality work.

37. E. 本段一二两句话“A lot of crops need extra nutrition to grow, so farmers add substances called fertilizers(肥料) to their soil to boost plants’ growth. These are important because they keep crops healthy and make sure that there is enough food for people and animals.” 而第37题后的一个句子“Every year, farmers around the world spend huge amounts of money on a total of 205 million tons of fertilizers, leading to severe water pollution and loss of biodiversity.” E “Unfortunately, they are expensive and come at an environmental cost.”
39. C. 第39题前的句子“Nevertheless, a method known as biochar technology, which is already used to make fuel, could turn human waste into a different type of fertilizer. The new study suggests this could be better for the planet and cheaper for farmers. Human waste is rich in nutrients which plants love.” 而第39题后面一句“Even worse, it can also contain leftover medicines, microplastics and poisonous metals.”
40. G. 第40题的上一句话“The process is called pyrolysis, where the waste is heated up in special tanks.” G “The harmful stuff in the waste won’t be a problem because it can be removed in the process.”,意为:粪便中的有害物质不再是问题,因为它们可以在这一过程中被去除。
