Cloisonne
The Chinese for cloisonne is jing tai lan, “Jing Tai” being the name of a Ming Dynasty emperor during whose reign mass production of such articles (物品) began. Cloisonne techniques were brought from Persia into Yunnan Province during the Yuan Dynasty and improved during the Ming Dynasty by searching for a combination with the traditional techniques, giving birth to a new kind of cloisonne called jing tai lan.
Jade Artifacts
Jade artifacts of the Liangzhu Culture are found mainly in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui provinces near the lower parts of the Yangtze River. The discovery in 1986 of the largest “king of congs,” was a surprise. The “king”, which is 8.8 centimeters long and 17.6 centimeters in diameter and weighs 6.5 kilograms, was dug from an old tomb on Mount Fanshan, Zhejiang Province.
Blue and White Porcelain
The Chinese porcelain (瓷器) before the Song Dynasty (960-1279) basically was blue or white, but this was changed in the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368) when a new type was produced, that is, the globally famous blue and white porcelain. Most raw materials for blue and white porcelain came from Yunnan, Zhejiang and Jiangxi provinces, and the rest were imported from foreign countries.
Animal-shaped bronze vessels
Bronze vessels (青铜器) of the Shang Dynasty (C. 1600-1046BC) take the shape of animals that look unusual to catch people’s eye. A most well-known example is a wine vessel dug from the tomb of Fu Hao, a wife of King Wuding of Shang, in Anyang, Henan Province. The vessel takes the shape of an animal with a head that looks like a horse head but with goat horns. There is a wing on each, and a dragon on the back.
21. What is “jing tai lan”
A. A technique brought from Persia. B. A Ming emperor’s name.
C. A new cloisonne type of Ming. D. A place producing cloisonne.
22. Where was the largest “king of congs” found
A. In a tomb on Mount Fanshan, Zhejiang. B. In the lower parts of the Yangtze River.
C. In the provinces of Jiangsu and Anhui. D. In the Liangzhu Cultural ruins in Yunnan.
23. Which artifact used raw materials from multiple sources
A. Cloisonne. B. Jade cong from Liangzhu Culture.
C. Blue and white porcelain. D. Animal-shaped bronze vessel.

Florence Nightingale, known as “The Lady With the Lamp”, is widely regarded as the founder of modern nursing. Born into a wealthy British family on May 12, 1820, she received an exceptional education for a woman of her time. Her father, believing in equal education for his daughters, taught her multiple languages including Latin, Greek, and French, along with philosophy and mathematics.
At seventeen, Nightingale experienced what she described as a “call from God” to reduce human suffering. This belief led her to pursue nursing, a profession then viewed as unsuitable for women of her social class. Her parents strongly opposed this career choice, as nursing was then associated with poor working conditions and low social status.
Despite family objections, Nightingale persisted. At thirty, she finally received permission to train as a nurse in Germany. By 1853, she had become the superintendent (负责人) of a London hospital.
The Crimean War (1853-1856) marked a turning point in her career. When reports revealed terrible conditions in British military hospitals, the government urgently needed to improve medical care. Nightingale was appointed to lead a team of nurses to Crimea.
What she found was horrifying — overcrowded hospitals with poor condition and medical supplies which were not enough. Through strict hygiene practices (卫生习惯) and better organization, she dramatically reduced the death rate. Her nightly rounds, checking on patients by lamplight, earned her the famous nick-name and lasting fame.
Beyond her nursing reforms, Nightingale was also a brilliant statistician. She developed new methods of data analysis to support her medical reforms and used statistics to convince authorities of the need for improved healthcare systems.
Nightingale’s legacy continues today. She transformed nursing into a respected profession and established the first secular (世俗的) nursing school. Her birthday is now celebrated worldwide as International Nurses Day, honoring her lasting effect on healthcare.
24. How is women’s education in Nightingale’s time
A. It focused on practical nursing skills. B. It was equal to men’s in most families.
C. It rarely included advanced academic subjects. D. It mainly prepared women for social activities.
25. Why did Nightingale’s parents oppose her career choice
A. They wanted her to focus on language studies. B. They considered nursing unworthy of her status.
C. They planned for her to work in a London hospital. D. They forbade her from working during the war.
26. How did the Crimean War affect Nightingale’s career
A. It delayed her nursing training in Germany. B. It provided a chance to prove her abilities.
C. It forced her to focus on statistical research. D. It made her lose interest in hospital management.
27. What does Nightingale’s work in Crimea show about her
A. She was skilled in military strategy. B. She valued practical solutions to problems.
C. She preferred working alone to leading others. D. She was mainly interested in scientific research.

In a meaningful step for China’s polar research, six scholars from Hong Kong, China, took part in the country’s 41st Antarctic expedition(科考队), gathering nearly 300 samples that may help understand Earth’s changing climate. This was the first time Hong Kong researchers have joined such a national scientific project.
The research team, which included scientists from the Chinese University of Hong Kong(CUHK), carried out studies around China’s Great Wall Station on the Antarctic Peninsula — one of the world’s fastest-warming areas. Their work centered on an important environmental change: the “greening of Antarctica”.
Researchers explained that climate change has caused two main changes in this region. Melting ice and snow have uncovered more land, while mosses (苔藓) have been growing for longer periods. “We found small ponds rich with different algae and tiny organisms (微生物), forming colorful scenes that differ greatly from people’s usual picture of a completely white Antarctica,” said Lin Liu, a teacher at CUHK.
The research mission used three ships working in different areas. Both Xuelong and Xuelong 2 icebreakers left Guangzhou in November 2024. Xuelong came back this April, and Xuelong 2 is planned to return in June.
All gathered samples, including moss, soil, ice, and microorganisms, have been sent to CUHK labs for study. Researchers from Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland will work together to examine these materials, hoping to find important clues about future ecosystem changes.
This teamwork is based on an agreement signed between CUHK and the Polar Research Institute of China in August 2024. The partnership hopes to link Hong Kong with national and other countries’ polar research groups and help Hong Kong scientists do advanced polar studies.
Looking forward, CUHK intends to keep joining polar research. Two scientists will take part in China’s 15th Arctic Ocean Scientific Expedition this summer, and more researchers are getting ready for the 42nd Antarctic Expedition at the end of this year.
As Chu Kar-kin, member of the Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macao Studies, said: “Hong Kong scientists joining national projects offers more chances and broader platforms for experts. Cooperating with top scientists across the country improves their skills while helping humans better understand our changing world.”
28. What does the word “greening” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. The melting of ice and snow. B. The growth of plant life.
C. The color change of water. D. The building of new labs.
29. Why were the colorful scenes mentioned in paragraph 3
A. To show Antarctica’s tourism potential.
B. To describe the beauty of the polar region.
C. To contrast with the traditional white image.
D. To explain why scientists study microorganisms.
30. What is Chu Kar-kin’s attitude toward the cooperation
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Concerned. D. Uninterested.
31. What is the main purpose of this passage
A. To criticize the slow progress of polar research.
B. To report Hong Kong’s participation in polar studies.
C. To explain the causes of climate change in Antarctica.
D. To introduce the work of Chinese research ships.

Australian scientists have successfully used artificial intelligence to find the plains-wanderer, one of the world’s most unique and endangered birds. This breakthrough (突破) provides important information for protecting this special species.
The plains-wanderer, standing just 15 centimeters tall, lives only in Australia’s grasslands. What makes this bird particularly unusual is its specific habitat requirements — it needs just the right amount of grass, earning it the nickname “Goldilocks” of the animal kingdom. The species faces serious threats as grasslands are turned into farms and cities. Zoos Victoria reports their numbers have dropped by over 85% in recent decades, with only 250 to 1,000 remaining in the wild.
This bird has several special characteristics. Poor at flying, it spends most time on land, choosing to run rather than fly when threatened. Scientifically classified in its own unique family, the plains-wanderer shows unusual gender roles — larger females defend their homes while smaller males care for the eggs.
Locating these birds presented significant challenges. Researchers from Zoos Victoria and Queensland University of Technology carried out a new solution: instead of searching visually, they decided to listen for the females’ distinctive “Ooom” call. They placed 35 recording devices (设备) across nine potential grassland habitats, collecting tens of thousands of hours of recordings of sound.
The real breakthrough came with AI analysis (分析). “The amount of recordings was far beyond human ability to analyze,” explained Chris Hartnett of Zoos Victoria. The specially trained AI system successfully identified plains-wanderer calls from two locations, including the first sighting west of Melbourne in over 30 years. Hartnett described the discovery as “like finding gold”.
This successful method opens new possibilities for wildlife protection. The research team continues monitoring while working with landowners to protect both the birds and their grassland habitats. As technology and conservation efforts combine, there’s renewed hope for saving this extraordinary species from dying out.
32. Why is the bird called “Goldilocks”
A. It has golden-colored feathers. B. It needs exactly the right habitat.
C. It was found in golden grasslands. D. It prefers living in warm areas.
33. What makes the plains-wanderer unusual
A. Its ability to fly long distances. B. Its common appearance worldwide.
C. Its household job division. D. Its preference for forest habitats.
34. How did researchers solve the locating problem
A. By using recording devices and AI. B. By searching grasslands on foot.
C. By setting up special bird feeders. D. By training dogs to track the birds.
35. Which is the best title for the passage
A. The Grasslands of Australia B. Saving Birds with Technology
C. Studying Bird Family Types D. Problems of Wildlife Protection

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The iron gates of Sunshine Nursing Home got opened as 16-year-old Tim stepped inside, his sneakers stepping on the autumn leaves on the ground. The hall was filled with the smell of air freshener. Elderly residents sat nodding in wheelchairs or played chess with trembling hands, lost in their own worlds. His volunteering here was a part of his school requirements.
Every Saturday, Tim found himself unwillingly volunteering at Sunshine Nursing Home. His tasks included assisting Mr. Johnson in the woodworking room and reading newspapers to Mrs. Clark in her room. Although he was initially forced, he began to find a sense of purpose in his work.
As he wandered through the nursing home, Tim found Mr. Johnson’s woodworking room lay away behind the laundry area. The walls were decorated with half-carved birds and a sign that read, “Measure twice, cut once.” The 78-year-old craftsman, with tough hands, guided Tim’s hands as they sanded (打磨) wood boards together. When Tim accidentally hurt a table leg with his iron tool, Mr. Johnson said, “Wood remembers every mistake. Wood never lies. Let your hands feel its truth.”
On the other side of the building, Mrs. Clark’s sunlit room was a clear contrast. Overflowing with many books, it was a shelter for the former teacher, who was legally blind. Whenever Tim read newspaper articles to her, she would tap her pearl-ringed finger gently. “Young man,” she encouraged him, putting her head to one side so her cat-eye glasses caught the light, “Words dance when you give them breath, dear. Even stock market reports deserve passion!” Her laughter, like wind chimes (风铃), covered up the loneliness Tim sometimes saw when her fingers felt over her family photos on the piano.
As the weeks passed, Tim learned to carve maple leaves under Mr. Johnson’s guidance and practiced reading with more expression to Mrs. Clark. One October afternoon, both the elders fell silent when they heard about the nursing home’s upcoming talent show. Tim noticed Mrs. Clark’s trembling hands catching an old violin case under her armchair, meaning something she intended to do.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡上相应位置作答。
On performance night, stage lights shone as Tim stood frozen behind the curtains.

Mr. Johnson had wheeled himself backstage. “Now, it’s your time to shine, son,” he roared, pointing toward Mrs. Clark tuning her dusty violin in the spotlight. Tim’s palms sweated as he approached the microphone, wooden maple leaf pendant (吊坠), a gift given by Mr. Johnson, bouncing against his chest. The crowd’s murmurs faded when Mrs. Clark drew her bow across strings, her milky eyes magically tracking Tim’s movements. Tim began to nerve himself to speak up loudly.
Tim’s initial stutter (口吃) turned into a smooth story, his voice accompanied by Mrs. Clark’s music. He described their shared journey: the wood shavings symbolizing warmth and the newspaper dancing words becoming life lessons. His vivid and passionate description struck all the audience. Mr. Johnson couldn’t help stepping onto the stage. As the final note ended in the air, Tim knelt to embrace the two elders, thanking them for their preparing him for this moment. The entire audience excitedly rose to applaud. Sometimes, the greatest growth comes not from chasing futures, but from honoring silent wisdom waiting in sunlit rooms.
