“Why?” It's a simple question that people ask Angela Madeline frequently. After all, she began a journey that very few people would ever attempt: walk around the world alone.
The thought of Madeline's journey did not start from a place of loss or personal crisis. She said, “I was searching for a deeper interaction with nature and people.” Walking would minimize her carbon footprint, plus the slow pace meant that she could fully engage herself in nature, and gain insights into other cultures in a unique way.
She left her hometown of Bend, Oregon, on 2 May 2016 and headed into an adventure. Along the way, Madeline would suffer from heatstroke (中暑) in the Australian desert and hear gunshots while camping in Turkey. “Still,” she said, “I didn't stop because I was more afraid of not following my heart than I was of losing everything I owned and loved.”
Apart from that, her slow pace allowed her to be drawn deeply into other cultures. She wandered the tiny seaside villages along Italy Tyrthenian Sea, enjoying the lively atmosphere. In Vietnam, she was offered food by an elderly woman and invited to rest in her wooden house at the peak for the night. She chose an experience of uncertainty and curiosity, in search of something she could never be certain to find: a sense of fulfillment and a deeper connection.
On 16 December 2022, Madeline's pilgrimage (朝圣之旅) ended right where it started. For now, she's working on a book, planning future journeys and creating more effective ways for women to find and express courage in their lives.
Whether a walk leads halfway around the world or just down the road, Madeline has shown the true worth of embracing (拥抱) the unknown and giving more than we receive along the way.
24.Why did Madeline decide to start her journey
A.To get rid of personal crisis.
B.To get closer to the world.
C.To reduce carbon footprint.
D.To slow down the pace of life.
25.Which of the following words can best describe Madeline
A.Cautious and gentle.
B.Tough and adventurous.
C.Outgoing and generous.
D.Open minded and humorous.
26.What can we know about Madeline during the journey
A.She was about to give up.
B.She was helped by Italian locals.
C.She experienced various cultures.
D.She enjoyed Australian coastal scenery.
27.What's this text mainly about
A.A new way to slow down life.
B.A closer connection with the wild.
C.An unforgettable memory of a trip.
D.A woman walking around the world.

In the past years the popularity of rock climbing has greatly increased, and so has the number of injuries. It has been estimated that rock climbing is now enjoyed by more than 9 million people in the US each year. Study findings revealed a 65 percent increase in the number of patients that were treated in US emergency departments for rock climbing-related injuries since 2001.
The study, published in the online issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, found that about 40,000 patients were treated in US emergency departments for rock climbing related injuries since 2001. The most common types of rock climbing related injuries were fractures (骨折) and sprains (扭伤). The ankle was the most common body part to be injured (40 percent). Climbers in the study ranged in age from 2 to 74, with an average age of 26. The study also found that women took up a quarter of the injuries.
Falls were the primary reason for injury with over three quarters of the injuries occurring as the result of a fall. The severity of fall related injuries had a lot to do with the height of the fall. Patients who were injured after falling from a height over 20 feet were 10 times more likely to be treated than patients who were injured falling from 20 feet or lower.
“We found that the climbers who fell from heights higher than 20 feet took up 70 percent of the patients treated for a rock climbing related injury,” explained the study author Lara McKenzie, PhD, director at the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Hospital. “This trend, combined with the fact that rock climbers have a higher hospitalization rate than other sports and recreational injuries, demonstrates the need to increase injury prevention efforts for climbers.”
28.Which body part is most likely to get injured for a climber
A.The arm. B.The ankle.
C.The knee. D.The hand.
29.How many women climbers in America got injured while climbing a rock since 2001
A.About 40,000. B.About 30,000.
C.About 20,000. D.About 10,000.
30.The severity of climbers' fall related injures is mainly related to ________.
A.the height of the fall
B.the climber's age
C.the climber's health conditions
D.the climber's climbing experience
31.The underlined word “demonstrates” in the last paragraph can be replaced by “________”.
A.demands B.prevents
C.proves D.describes

When it comes to risky behavior, adolescence is the perfect storm. In fact, teens are hardwired to seek challenge. According to a study by University College London (UCL), risk taking behavior peaks during adolescence. As an adolescent's social emotional system matures, they long for stimulation and teen challenge.
Moreover, the study found that teens took risks because they enjoyed the thrill. In fact, they often understood the consequences of their behavior. However, the desire to take risks was stronger than their common sense. That's because the teen brain is not fully developed. Therefore, the areas controlling impulses (冲动) and decision making are still immature.
The study involved adolescents and adults aged 9 to 35 years. Participants chose between risky and safe options in a computer gambling game. Scientists found that the teenagers took the most risks compared with the other groups. In fact, 14 year old teens demonstrated the most risky behavior. In other words, they were constantly seeking challenge and excitement.
In another study at the University of Texas at Austin, participants aged 8 to 30 were given money as a reward for correctly identifying an image. Scientists measured how their brains responded when they found out whether their answers were right or wrong. The teenagers' brains released the highest levels of dopamine, a chemical associated with pleasure. Dopamine motivates the brain to seek rewards and is linked to addiction. Thus, the researchers concluded that teens are more willing to take risks in order to experience rewards.
Risk taking isn't always a bad thing if it takes place within safe boundaries. In fact, a certain level of safe, positive risk taking is essential for teens to develop their sense of self and gain self esteem (自尊). Healthy risk taking activities include playing sports, outdoor adventures, performing on stage, and reaching out to make new friends.
In conclusion, there's no getting around it: Teens will always seek thrills and push the limits. They're made that way. But parents can help them find healthy challenges that support growth and reduce risk.
32.What is the reason for teens' tendency to take risks
A.They lack common sense and decision making ability.
B.They don't understand the consequences of their behavior.
C.They enjoy the excitement and actively pursue stimulation.
D.Their brain areas controlling impulses are fully developed.
33.How did the researchers carry out the first study
A.By analyzing the choices of teens and adults in the gambling game.
B.By analyzing the results of the gambling game.
C.By measuring how brains worked in the gambling game.
D.By observing how excited the teens were in the gambling game.
34.Which of the following statements is mentioned in Para.4-5
A.The more risk taking teens are, the more self esteem they have.
B.Dopamine plays an important role in teens' risk taking activities.
C.Making new friends shouldn't be considered as risk taking.
D.Taking risks makes a teenager more eager for reward.
35.What is the author's attitude towards risk taking behavior of teenagers
A.Negative. B.Approving.
C.Objective. D.Ambiguous.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Wolf! Hank thought. The boy stared out of the cabin (小木屋) window at the animal. It was sitting a stone's throw away in the moonlight. The wolf howling (嚎叫), Hank shook slightly. For the first time, he felt truly alone in the mountains.
It had felt good to be allowed to come along with Dad. Dad was a scientist who studied wild animals. Two days ago, they had moved into an empty cabin. Here, Dad would write a report about what he had found. But they discovered that dozens and dozens of mice had taken over the cabin. The little creatures had gotten into the supplies of dried food and ruined almost everything.
Now, because most of the food was gone, Dad had left to get new supplies from town and would be staying overnight. Hank had insisted on staying behind.
The wolf howl sounding again, Hank opened the logbook to write about it, but his hand shook. Dad had never mentioned having any trouble with wolves. Hank closed the logbook and put it on the table. Quickly he looked around for something he could use as a weapon just in case. He grabbed a stick from the fireplace, went to the door, and took a deep breath.
Then he opened the door, waved the stick, and shouted with all his might (强大力量): “Go away, wolf. Go away!” Shocked, the wolf sprang (跳跃) and started running away. Hank closed the door, his heart pounding hard. When he'd caught his breath, he turned back to the window. Oh, no! There was the wolf sitting right where it had sat before.
Hank stared at the wolf. The wolf stared right back at him. Hank was staring into the eyes of a hunter. He knew, like all creatures, the wolf needed to eat. Hank's dad had said wolves play their part in the environment by eating deer, rabbits, and other animals. But maybe, like the hungry mice that were running about Hank's feet, wolves go for any food they can find. Suddenly, Hank heard a squeaky (吱吱叫的) noise!
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。

As the wolf sprang up and tried to catch another mouse, Hank opened the logbook again.

Hello everyone, today I'd like to introduce a holiday to you. No One Eats Alone Day is a holiday that falls on the third Friday of February each year. This holiday began in honor of Lily Rachel Smith, a young girl who often felt left out at school because of her illness. When she passed away at age fifteen, it made other teens in her area think long and hard about what it feels like to be lonely. Then the holiday was started as a campaign between a handful of north Carolina schools in 2012. They wanted to address the issue of some children being left alone by their classmates during lunch. Eventually, word of this holiday spread far beyond North Carolina. Currently, millions of students in more than 2,500 US schools in all fifty states participate in this holiday. This is a holiday that's mainly observed in middle and high schools across America. However, that doesn't mean that people can't support the cause behind this holiday. One way people can make a difference is by finding out what they can do by visiting “beyond differences”, which manages this holiday every year.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Holding his breath, Hank raised his head to see. As the wolf sprang up and tried to catch another mouse, Hank opened the logbook again.

Holding his breath, Hank raised his head to see. He found the wolf, howling wildly, was chasing some mice in the moonlight. Letting out squeaky noises, the mice ran about on the grass aimlessly. Suddenly the hungry wolf sprang up, catching a mouse. Sitting a stone's throw away, it ate the mouse it captured. Running about its feet were dozens of noisy mice. The wolf rose, ready to catch another mouse. Shocked, Hank turned back to the table for his logbook.
As the wolf sprang up and tried to catch another mouse, Hank opened the logbook again. His heart pounded hard. Grabbing the pen, Hank quickly wrote what was happening outside the cabin. Another mouse caught, the wolf swallowed it whole. The hunting over, the wolf ran away with its stomach filled. Closing the logbook, Hank took a deep breath, feeling so good. It was the first time that he had stayed alone in the mountains to study wild animals. That night he stayed awake, eager to report what he discovered to his dad.

Eventually, word of this
holiday spread far beyond North Carolina.
18.What do we know about No One Eats Alone Day
A.It is celebrated annually.
B.It was started accidentally.
C.It falls on a Friday in May.
19.Why was No One Eats Alone Day established initially
A.To praise a school.
B.To remember a girl.
C.To help the hungry.
20.What is “beyond differences”?
A.A campaign. B.A holiday.

篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。相比于成年人,青少年更喜欢冒险,这与他们脑中释放的多巴胺有关。作者认为在安全范围内冒险,有助于青少年发展自我意识和获得自尊。
32.What is the reason for teens' tendency to take risks
A.They lack common sense and decision making ability.
B.They don't understand the consequences of their behavior.
C.They enjoy the excitement and actively pursue stimulation.
D.Their brain areas controlling impulses are fully developed.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。

[精彩范文]
