We should all have at least one fire extinguisher (灭火器) somewhere in our house or office building. However, it's not enough to simply keep an extinguisher somewhere. The best way to be ready for a sudden fire is to study this guide carefully and review it from time to time.
{1}Have a clear exit route (疏散路线)
Before using the fire extinguisher, make sure you have a clear exit route. If you cannot put out the fire, you will need to make a safe exit. Also, make sure everyone else is out.
{2} Report the fire
Even if the fire appears manageable, you should always have the firemen on the way. Once they arrive, they can double check to see if the fire has been completely put out.
{3} Stand back
Face the fire and keep your back to the clear exit. You should stay between 1.8 and 2.5 meters away from the flames (火焰) as you prepare to use the fire extinguisher.
{4} Use the extinguisher
It can be difficult to think clearly during a fire. One method to help you remember how to use an extinguisher is to remember “PASS”:
INCLUDEPICTURE"9HJ-8.tif" INCLUDEPICTURE "E:\\26春课件\\九英HJ\\9HJ-8.tif" \* MERGEFORMATINET
P-Pull: Pull the pin on the fire extinguisher.
A-Aim (瞄准): Aim low. Point the nozzle at the bottom of the fire.
S-Squeeze(挤压): Squeeze the handle to let out the extinguishing chemicals.
S-Sweep: Sweep the nozzle from side to side until the fire is put out.
{5}Keep an eye on the fire
After the fire appears to be out, continue to watch the fire area to make sure it doesn't start burning again. If the fire does start up again, repeat the “PASS”.
{6} Get to a safe place
Once the fire is out, or if you are unable to put it out, find a place out of reach of the fire.

Hurricanes (飓风) are very powerful storms that can cause terrible harm. Some hurricanes produce winds stronger than 155 mph that are able to harm houses and buildings.Knowing how and where hurricanes form can help keep you safe if a hurricane does come.
The hurricane forms over warm water after the ocean has been heated up during the hot summer months.Because it needs warm water, it happens most often during late summer and early fall.In the Atlantic Ocean, the hurricane season is from June to November.
Also, since hurricanes need warm ocean water to form, the people who live in areas near the coast are influenced by hurricanes.People who don't live near the coast needn't worry too much about staying safe during a hurricane. However, even though hurricanes happen near coastlines, strong winds can still go further inland with lots of rain.
Hurricanes can be very dangerous. When a hurricane moves toward land, it can cause harm in a number of ways.If you live somewhere where hurricanes might happen, it is important for you to know what to do to protect yourself.First, have a plan to leave the area, and listen to local weather stations for any weather notices. If you don't have time to leave, then find a safe place to stay.Make sure your shelter (避难所) is on higher ground, that the windows are closed, and that you stay inside until the hurricane passes.
53. ( )What does the underlined word “it” refer to
A.Warm water. B.The hurricane.
C.The hot summer. D.The summer month.
54. ( )Which question does the passage answer
A.How do hurricanes form
B.How long does a hurricane last

D.How do we stop hurricanes from moving toward land

A typhoon is a very big and powerful storm. It forms in the Northwest Pacific Ocean. It has strong winds that blow in a circle around a center called the eye. It also has a lot of rain and sometimes thunder and lightning(雷电).
Typhoons form over the warm ocean water of the tropics(热带).When warm wet air over the water rises, cooler air takes the place of it. The cooler air will then get warm and start to rise. This cycle causes huge storm clouds to form.
These storm clouds will begin to move around a central point with the spin(旋转) of the Earth. If there is enough warm water, the cycle will continue and the storm clouds and wind speeds will grow, causing a typhoon to form.
Typhoons can be very dangerous because they can do great harm to the land and the people who live near the coastline. They can make big waves that cover the coastline with water. They can knock down trees, houses and other buildings with their strong winds. They can also cause mudslides(泥石流) with their heavy rain.
INCLUDEPICTURE"9HJ-33.tif" INCLUDEPICTURE "E:\\26春课件\\九英HJ\\9HJ-33.tif" \* MERGEFORMATINET
