Today, food delivery (外卖) is an important part of our daily lives. But did you know it started a long time ago
Expert Hou Yinguo says dining services like today’s food delivery began during the Han Dynasty (206BC-AD220). But the term“food delivery”was first used in the Song Dynasty (960-1279).
At first, food delivery was a special service for important people. But later, it became popular among everyone. In the Song Dynasty, China’s food takeout business reached a golden age. The book A Dream of Splendor (《东京梦华录》) says that there was a lot of food in Bianjing (today’s Kaifeng in Henan). People often bought ready-made meals from local shops instead of cooking.
Without phones, ordering was harder than today. They had to visit a restaurant in person or send someone to make the order, then tell the restaurant when and where they needed the food, and the restaurant would bring it to them. The delivery person was called xianhan (闲汉).
People wanted their delivered food to be warm and tasty. They didn’t have our modern technology, but they were very clever! In the Song Dynasty, they had a special dish called wenpan (温盘). It was like two plates put together with space in the middle. They would pour hot water into that space to keep the food on top warm.

People have different opinions about what makes a good friend. Some believe friends should be very much alike, while others think it’s better for friends to be different. Let’s look at what two young people have to say.
Li Ming feels that having a friend who is similar to you is a great thing. He says, “A good friend is like a mirror, you can learn about someone by looking at their friends.” Li Ming and his friend Zhang Wei enjoy many of the same things. They both love sports, especially basketball. Even though Zhang Wei is better at it, this encourages Li Ming to practise more and improve. Besides sports, they are both quiet and enjoy reading. Li Ming reads more science fiction, while Zhang Wei prefers history books, so they often share book recommendations. For Li Ming, having things in common makes their friendship strong and enjoyable.
On the other hand, Wang Fang prefers friends who are different from her. She believes differences help her grow. Wang Fang describes herself as a shy girl, but she has become more confident and now finds it fun to meet new people. She also has a friend named Chen Lei, who is very straightforward and not afraid to point out when she is wrong. Wang Fang appreciates (感激) this. She says, “We should respect each other’s differences and learn from one another.”

Jane Goodall was born on April 3, 1934, in London, England. When she was a little girl, she loved animals very much. Once, she even stayed in a henhouse for hours just to watch how a hen laid (下蛋) an egg. Her parents were happy to see her love for nature and gave her a toy chimpanzee (黑猩猩) named Jubilee. This toy made Jane dream of working with animals one day.
When Jane grew up, she went to Africa to study chimpanzees. At first, the chimpanzees were scared of her. They ran away when they saw her. But Jane didn’t give up. She sat quietly in the forest every day, watching them from far away. Slowly, the chimpanzees came close to her. She even gave them names like David and Goliath.
Jane found many amazing things about chimpanzees. She saw that they used sticks to get insects to eat. Before that, people thought only humans could use tools. She also saw that chimpanzees loved their families. Mothers took good care of their babies, and chimpanzees played together like children.
Later, Jane wanted to tell the world about chimpanzees. She wrote books and gave talks. She wanted people to know that chimpanzees are smart and need our help. Many forests where chimpanzees lived were cut down. Jane started groups to protect these forests and chimpanzees.
Even when Jane was over 90 years old, she still worked hard for animals. She traveled around the world, telling kids to love nature. She said, “Every individual (个体) matters. Every individual has a role to play.” Jane Goodall’s love for animals teaches us to care for our planet.
