I step out the back door and the blackness of night swallows me. There is no moon to light my way to the clothes-line and my forgotten wash. I’m piloted by the memory of a thousand trips along the familiar path. Soon my arms are piled with night-damp pants and shirts that have danced all day to the powerful wind.
The trip back is easier. The lights of the house guide me — great squares of amber light suspended in the darkness. Everything inside the house appears transformed. The kitchen cabinets look warmer, richer; the rows of jars and bottles are homier. Even the pine wall behind the stove glows with a new personality.
I back up farther into the yard. From here, I can see the living room. John’s head is bent over a spelling book, his hair golden in the lamplight, his face set with a frown of concentration. Robert kneels by the sofa, pushing a wheeled Lego along the cliff-edge of the cushion. The corner of a newspaper flaps into sight and disappears as Richard’s invisible hands turn the pages. I picture his absorbed face, studious-looking in new reading glasses. For a split second, I am a stranger peeking into a home I have never seen before.
What if I could never again touch John’s springy (有弹力的) hair or see Robert’s bright smile Deep inside me, a door opens that barrier we set up to guard our secret selves and without conditions, I let my family in. All the annoyances that families are likely to feel, all the twists and stumbling blocks in our relationships, all the difficulties of living together in harmony become unimportant — overwhelmed by the simple fact that we love one another.
Moments like this don’t occur every day, and maybe that’s the way it should be. It would be exhausting to live our lives weighed down by such intensity of feeling. But the memory sustains me, just as the smell of fresh air clings to the clothes in my arms.
4. Why did the author go out in the dark
A. To collect the clothes. B. To experience the powerful wind.
C. To escape from the chores. D. To enjoy the quietness of the night.
5. What made all the things inside the house appear to change

B. There was a barrier deep inside the author’s heart.
C. All the family members positively adapted to their routines.

6. What matters most in the family according to the author
A. Mutual love existing in the heart. B. Strong barriers guarding the secret.
C. Intensive feeling keeping all the time. D. Family members sharing the chores.
7. What is the best title for the passage
A. Family Transforming B. Outside Looking in
C. A Journey to Darkness D. Unforgettable Moments
C
Everyone knows the horrible feeling: A stuffy night, just a little too warm, leads to restless sleep, and then next morning, you feel like a slow shell of yourself. Now a new study links sleep loss with climate change. Researchers from the University of Copenhagen found that ever-warmer nighttime temperatures push bedtimes later and wake times earlier, costing us precious nighttime rest.
Sleepers tracked in the study lost rest even in places where temperatures weren’t blazingly high, and had trouble adapting to even mildly challenging sleep temperatures. And sleep costs, the researchers warn, will rise as temperatures do, potentially costing sleepers an extra 13 to 15 days of poor sleep each year by the end of the century.
It’s a very clear example of how climate change is playing out in people’s everyday lives. Sleep loss from climate change “is already happening,” says Kelton Minor, the lead author of the study at the University of Copenhagen.
Minor and his colleagues looked at data collected worldwide between 2021 and 2023 from nearly 50,000 people’s wristband activity trackers. The trackers recorded when those people fell asleep, woke up, and how they slept in between. The researchers could match sleepers’ locations with location-specific climate data. That let the researchers compare the sleep data with local outdoor temperatures. They were looking at continuous records of individual people. They could see how someone slept on a cool night in June versus a hot one a few days later, or how they reacted to an unseasonably warm February night.
The dataset was unique in that it didn’t rely on self-reports. It also spanned the world while the few previous studies looking at the direct relationship between climate and sleep focused on just a few people. What was more remarkable were the results. People slept most when outside temperatures were below 50°F (10℃) . Above that threshold, their chances of sleeping less than seven hours went way up. Above 77°F (25℃) , the losses accelerated. When outdoor nighttime temperatures topped 86°F (30℃) , people lost an average of about 15 minutes a night.
8. What is the function of the first paragraph
A. To present a stuffy night. B. To lead in the topic.
C. To show climate change. D. To highlight nighttime rest.
9. What can we learn about the study
A. Slight temperature change will affect the sleep quality.
B. Sleep loss from climate change will happen in the near future.
C. The trackers can automatically match sleepers’ locations with climate data.
D Sleepers tracked in the study lost rest in places where temperatures were high.
10. What was special about the dataset used in the study
A. It covered just a few people from Copenhagen.
B. It included information about indoor temperatures.
C. It collected information from the trackers’ self-reports.
D. It used continuous and objective sleep data from a large scale.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. When the suitable sleep temperature is. B. Why the study results are more remarkable.
C. Climate change is consuming precious sleep. D. Poor sleep has big personal and economic costs.
D
Here’s something worth tweeting about: Being around more birds can boost your family’s happiness. A German study of more than 26,000 Europeans found that the cheeriest folks lived near natural areas with a wider diversity of bird species.
Birds are an indicator species, meaning they basically function as a “check engine light” for biodiversity. When something is out of whack in nature, birds let us know by disappearing, because they need a healthy environment to survive. Since songbirds tend to be cute and colorful, it seems natural that having more of them close by is a good thing. But the mood lifter isn’t from the birds alone, researchers say. It’s the rich biodiversity or variety of life.
Clint Francis, a Cal Poly biology professor who supervised a recent study, says that hearing bird songs while hiking can hike up our sense of well-being. Francis says it could be related to how our ancestors used birdsong and chatter as a cue for danger. “I think many people can relate to the experience of walking through a forest — birds are singing and chattering — then suddenly everything goes quiet,” he explains. “Our subconscious uses passive listening as a surveillance mechanism.” Hearing birds might also produce positive effects because it reminds us of previous happy experiences. “Birdsong might signal the arrival of nice weather and harsh winter conditions are behind us,” Francis adds.
However, Francis says human-made noise is bad for birds. Based on his research, unwanted sounds — like traffic and gas-powered leaf blowers—tend to keep birds away. Plus, more background noise makes it hard to hear the birds. “This is one reason why people reported seeing and hearing more birds during the COVID-19 lockdown,” he explains.
“To bring more biodiversity birds, and happiness into your family’s life, create a wildlife habitat garden with the kids,” says David Mizejewski, a National Wildlife Federation naturalist. “No matter the size of your outdoor space, you can build a bird-friendly habitat and turn down the noise a little bit in your yard.”
12. What does Clint Francis’s study show
A. Blowing leaves can drive birds away easily.
B. Being with diverse birds close by can lift your mood.
C. The happiest thing is living near natural areas in Europe.
D. Hiking is beneficial to your health because of the bird songs.
13. What does the underlined phrase “out of whack” mean in paragraph 2
A. Out of trouble. B. Out of sight. C. Out of order. D. Out of date.
14. Which of the following might Clint Francis agree with
A. Birdsong functions well in predicting weather.
B. People can build a bird-friendly habitat to bring biodiversity.
C. Sudden quietness in forest causes birdsong and chatter to disappear.
D. Human-made noise became less during the COVID-19 lockdown.
15. What’s the main topic of the passage
A. Diverse birds enhancing happiness. B. Bonds between birds and happiness.
C. A bird-friendly habitat for children. D. Birds for better living of humans.

My two older sisters love amusement parks. They are thrill-seekers and go on the scariest rides. Every year, my father and I had the job of waiting on the line for them for their next ride. But on this day, my older sister, Christina encouraged me to ride the roller coaster with them.
“You should try it you know. I think you’re tall enough now.”
“I don’t want to go,” I said shaking my head.
“Come on I promise you it’s really fun. You’re going to regret it if you don’t go because this is our last ride of the day.”
I had to admit she could be convincing. After thinking for a while, I slowly took my sister’s hand. She smiled and dragged me towards the huge line for the roller coaster. My hands were shaking. My sister assured me again that it was going to be OK. Even my father encouraged me to go on with them.
Seeing the majestic heights of the roller coaster and other rides gave me goose bumps. I started to freak out and become pessimistic about the situation. “What if those buckles unlock and I shoot out ” I thought to myself. I shook for 30 minutes as the line got shorter. As I got closer, I could see the tremendous speed and height of the roller coaster. “Why did I say yes ” I freaked out even harder.
I turned around to look for my dad, so I could back out. But he was already out of sight. So I clung to my sister and took a deep breath. When our turn came and a guy in a red polo shirt measured my height to see if I was tall enough, I knelt down slightly.
“Alright buddy you’re good,” he announced.
“I think the front seat will be the best so we can see everything,” my oldest sister suggested.
“Hey, don’t you think the front will be the scariest with all those hard turns ” I said.
They didn’t listen to me; the three of us piled into the front. The guys in red polo shirts locked us in with seatbelts that had yellow buckles. I double-checked to make sure they were locked.
“Hey, it’s going to be fine, trust me,” one sister said.
Paragraph 1: Soon, there was a loud blaring noise to signal that the roller coaster was starting.

Secondly, it’s a great chance to mingle with local people and get a taste of the local culture.
To solve the traffic problem, I can meet you at your place and we’ll go there together by subway. It’s convenient and won’t get stuck in traffic.
Looking forward to enjoying the concert with you.
Best,
Li Hua

Soon, there was a loud blaring noise to signal that the roller coaster was starting. Click, click, clunk, the roller coaster slowly inched out of the covered boarding area and into the launch and finally blasted off. As it accelerated, what I could only hear were the screams of excitement and the swooshing noises of the coaster car cutting through the wind. The roller coaster was at its peak getting ready to drop. Suddenly, it boosted up and shot forward at an unimaginable speed. Frightened yet excited, I screamed out instinctively. It seemed that I was swooping down uncontrollably. Previous fear and anxiety faded, giving way to the newfound exhilaration. I didn’t freak out again. Instead I opened my arms to embrace this unparalleled experience. Finally, we arrived at the ground safely. Through this memorable trip, I realized each risk we took was a step out of the comfort zone and a testament to our courage.
