In the fall of 2021, my husband got a chance to spend one year in Nanjing teaching international law. One year after we got to China, I began to study Chinese. It was really hard for me to speak Putonghua.
For me, it wasn’t the grammar. “I want to buy this book” is pretty straightforward, “我想买这本书”. And I could memorize lots of Chinese characters (hanzi). However, many words sound alike but mean something different. Take the sound “jiàn” for example, it always leaves me guessing—the warship (舰) or the arrow (箭), to meet (见) or to build (建)
Then, somewhere along the way, I started talking to people around me in Chinese. I tried to communicate with the women in the markets about how to cook vegetables. Sometimes I talked to taxi drivers about the songs on the radio. Gradually, I could listen to songs and understand the lyrics without looking them up. I finally reached the point where I could enjoy living in China without using a dictionary.
Now, as our year is up and we pack up to leave, I’m finding my Chinese has improved. I search Baidu Maps in Chinese, keep my mobile phone contacts in Chinese, and send WeChat messages to Chinese friends in Chinese. But mostly, I don’t worry about my performance anymore and enjoy every experience of speaking Chinese. Every language is different. For me, finally, I’ve learned that the key to learning Chinese is to enjoy living in China.

33. Who did the writer talk to in Chinese to practice

During the 2021 Shanghai Fashion Week, a young, slim and confident model with an iron leg drew everyone’s attention. Her name was Niu Yu. She lost her right leg in the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. She was only 11 years old then.
Niu Yu used to be in the school sports team. She loved running. But the disaster (灾难) broke her dream. She had to live with an artificial leg (假肢). It wasn’t comfortable, and her leg often bled. People’s curious eyes made her even more uncomfortable. She always tried to hide her leg under jeans or dresses.
With the support of her family and friends, Niu Yu slowly came out from the shadows (阴影). In 2018, right before her 21st birthday, she decided not to hide her leg any longer. To her surprise, she received lots of encouraging words. She also finished a half marathon in about 4 hours. She completed the hard 10-year journey of finding herself again.
Now Niu Yu puts her experiences on social media (媒体). She listens to disaster survivors (幸存者) and encourages them to look forward. In 2023, she carried the torch (火炬) at the FISU World University Games. “It is a great honour for me,” she said. “But it is also a good chance to show people the power of being brave.”

Forty-eight hours in Hong Kong may sound like a short visit, but it will surprise you how much you can see and do. The best way to get the most out of your trip is to plan ahead of time (提前).
Hong Kong has a great public transportation system that is easy to use. The system is called the MTR, which includes the metro (地铁), trains and buses. You can get a card called the Octopus Card at a metro station and use it to travel around. Taxis are another way to get around Hong Kong. There are many taxis everywhere.
On the first day, go up Victoria Peak. At the top of the mountain, you will see beautiful city views. Then have “dim sum” for lunch. Dim sum is made up of many different dishes. On the second day, spend your time shopping at one of Hong Kong’s many malls, such as IFC or Times Square. You can also shop at smaller stores in Soho and Sheung Wan as well. Unlike the markets, the prices are set, so you cannot change them. After shopping, if you want to experience Hong Kong’s nightlife, head to Lan Kwai Fong. 七、阅读表达(共5小题,计10分)
阅读下面短文,根据要求完成下面各小题。
Everyone sometimes has disagreements with friends or family members. For example, you might not agree about what game to play, which restaurant makes the best pizza. Sometimes you may disagree with your friends about more serious subjects.
Disagreements are uncomfortable. There are some steps you can take to make the conversation meaningful. Here is how to talk to people you disagree with.
See their attitude
Even if you disagree with someone, you can still listen to what they say. Let them know that you’re paying attention to them by listening carefully with interest. Another way to show that you’re listening is by asking questions or repeating what they said. You can start by saying, “OK. I understand you. You are saying...”
Use polite language
When someone has an opinion you don’t agree with, don’t pay too much attention to it. Avoid using impolite adjectives, like “stupid” “foolish” or “silly”.
Instead, focus on speaking calmly (沉着地). For example, you may begin with “I feel” or “I see this in another way”.
Stick to the facts
If you have a strong opinion it’s better to stick to the facts instead of feelings. Start by asking if you can share your opinion. Then relax your shoulders and speak in a calm voice. (3)If you are stopped by some person, you can remind the person that it’s your turn to speak. Then give him another chance to speak later.
Find common ground
If you find that you can’t change the other person’s mind, and they may not change yours. Still, look for the points you agree on. (4)You may also get a better understanding of each other’s opinion. In the end, it’s worth the effort because healthy communication builds strong relationships and communities.

Should Teenagers Be Allowed to Use the Internet
Recently, I’ve had a discussion with my parents about whether teenagers should use the Internet.
My parents worry that it might expose us to unhealthy information or cause addiction. However, I believe the Internet is a useful tool when used properly. Firstly, it helps us study by providing rich learning resources and online courses. Secondly, it makes daily life more convenient, such as allowing us to read news and connect with friends.
Therefore, teenagers should be guided to use the Internet correctly. We can set time limits, choose positive content, and balance online and offline activities.
